Late night phone calls aren't always bad news... mercury (3/17 update)

My phone rang at 11:00 last night. Anyone that knows me knows they better not dial my number after 10 and expect to keep their head. I made an exception last night. Mom is not headless this morning.

They got a call from the organ bank, or his doctor, or something... not sure who called... I only know that they say they have a potential liver for Al (my step-dad).

Initially, they only do a blood type match, then when the organ is actually received they do further testing to show if it's a good tissue match, etc. They have one hour from time of receipt to determine if the match is a good one. If it's not, it's passed along to the next candidate that it may be better for.

If further testing shows it to be a good match and the "right" liver for him, it will be transplanted into him any moment now. Or the surgery might already be in process, depending on what time he ate dinner or had a snack last.

The surgery itself is incredibly risky. If the new liver doesn't take immediately, he's a goner.

If it does take, the next 6 months of recovery will be a very long haul for him. He's been told that he will wonder everyday why he made this choice and question it, but that eventually, it gets better and then one day, he'll just feel good again.

Please hold a good thought for Al (and my mom). Pray, chant, whatever you do. Either way this goes they're going to need some strength to get through this.

Also... if you could... please keep the donor and his/her family in your thoughts, too. We wouldn't have even this hope if it weren't for their tragedy and generosity.

I'm really nervous, I can't imagine what Mom or Al feel right now. If I can get a hold of her and find out what part of the maze they're in, I'm heading over there after I get the kids off to school.

Thank you everyone!!

Date: 3/17/2008 6:31:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    he was doing great up through Saturday night. today, he's not doing well. he started hallucinating yesterday. he doesn't know where he is, he's picking at his incision, pulling out IVs... it's reminding mom of when dad went through detox. One of the nurses asked her if he had been drinking recently because it's very much like withdrawal symptoms; she also realized that it made no sense because they wouldn't have done the transplant if he had. (he hasn't had a drink since 1984.) As of right now, things don't look good at all. The transplant surgeon says he's great from the neck down, but his brain is all messed up. He said he's 98% sure that this is reversible, but since he's not a psychiatrist or neurologist he doesn't know for sure. so until one of those takes an evaluation and run some tests, we don't know much. The thing that scares me most: the surgeon gave mom a big hug and surgeons aren't known to do that kind of human-type thing. Please keep praying.
Date: 3/22/2008 7:46:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    great news! he's back to good. the anti-rejection meds they had him on caused a toxic reaction, after weaning him off that one, and starting on a new one, he's done a complete turn around. He's out of ICU and the feeding tube has been removed. His voice is strong, he's eating like a horse and walking around and everything. Thank you all so very much for sticking with us through this. It means much more than I can express.
Date: 3/27/2008 8:39:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    He's HOME! There's still a long recovery in front of him, and there will always be the chance that his body will reject this foreign liver, but things are looking so far up from where they were this time last week. Thank you all so much for everything!
Date: 7/2/2008 6:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 28363    That is great news - Please keep us updated as we send well wishes your way.
