Christmas music is boring.

So we were never big on Christmas. Its funny to say but the more Pagan I got the more I enjoyed it (since most traditions stem from Paganisim :p). Im out on my own for the third year and I gotta say despite being a little bitter towards the lack of certain folk in my life I am becoming more and more Christmas-sy.

My family had no real Xmas traditions. There was a crappy meal (same as every day) and we did up the tree and we'd watch the Xmas shows (Rudolph, etc) but that was that. Outside of the food and parties one of the things I think I really missed out on was the Xmas MUSIC. I know all the standards. I never was really big on it even after Paganisim because of the huge Jesus references.

Then a favorite artist of mine released a full album of Xmas music and of course I had to buy it. Despite several songs being big on Jesus I gotta say its some good stuff 3 years on. This CD was called 'Christmas in my heart' by Sarah Connor. She took the standards and popped them up and then in a neat twist she did a bunch of traditionally German language songs and recorded them in English thus making them all new to me. Some of my favorites were "Be Thankful", "Come Together", and "Tonight's the night".

Then last year not really seeking out music I read up on an Indian artist named Jana. She had a Christmas music CD named 'American Indian Christmas' with your standards in various (about 10) Native American languages. Of course I had to have it. The music itself is a bit 'midi/blah' but hearing "Amazing Grace" in Lumbee is very interesting. Her voice is good as well.

So this year I got all excited. I took those CDs plus some random one off songs from artists I liked ("Santa can you hear me?" will always rock) and made a mix CD. I was hoping for some NEW Xmas music but after looking into I have declared all standard American Xmas music BORING. For starters EVERY sexy female vocalist has done "Santa Baby" TO DEATH. Kylie Minogue, Kelli Pickler, Samantha Mumba, EVERYONE. The rest of what Im finding is more covers of "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "Winter Wonderland", and of course "White Christmas", etc. Can no one do anything unique anymore? Doesnt anyone write new Xmas songs these days? I just find it lazy. Id say the coolest track I've found this year is "Xristougena" by Despina Vandi

So anyone know any other cool Xmas songs? Ones that arent done to death or ones done in a unique way?

For anyone interested in the ones I mentioned here's the Amazon links:

Jana: American Indian Christmas

Sarah Connor: Christmas in my heart

Date: 12/9/2007 12:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 43015    I've noticed that too..most singers just seem to do a different remake of the popular christmas songs..not much for original ones..but I can't think of any at the top of my head..what kind of genre are you looking for?
Date: 12/9/2007 1:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 64279    Me and my Oma always listen to carols in German. She has a couple of cd's that just sound so beautiful. I really like the Coventry Carol too, although it's really sad to me. And this year in theatre, my friend, Nash got me really addicted to Barry Manilow. So the Manilow's christmas album is awesome too, even though they're the songs that are over done.

Date: 12/9/2007 4:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 22433    SheDaisy's got a really good Christmas album. There's a few new songs mixed in with remixed traditional songs. Their CD is called "Brand New Year". it's my favourite holiday CD
Date: 12/9/2007 5:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 25390    I was going to mention SheDaisy as well. They do a lot of the traditional music..HOWEVER..they completely redid it so it doesn't sound overdone. I love their version of Deck the Halls---so cool!
Date: 12/9/2007 9:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 3901    I'm a huge fan of Bright Eyes' Christmas Album. It's old christmas favourites (little drummer boy, blue christmas, silver bells etc) but it's revamped to fit the bands style of music.
Date: 12/9/2007 1:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    ummm kylie Minogue is Australian.lol. And you should hear My chemical Romance do all I want for christmas is you. Matchbook Romance do I'll be home for Christmas, and Chris Cornell (lead singer of soundgarden and audioslave) do Ave Maria!
Date: 12/9/2007 1:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 22433    I'm tired of hearing "Last Christmas" ('last christmas, i gave you my heart, the very next day, you gave it away...')..every time I hear it I think that the guy needs to stop giving his heart to her every christmas..he should have noticed a pattern by now LOL!
Date: 12/9/2007 4:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 12072    H, I love the last christmas song! But only because it reminds me of my time in Germany and my friends...so actually it makes me sad :-( I know what ya mean Kaja about some songs being done to death. My favourite xmas song is Christmas Carol--it's about a guy playing Santa at an orphanage and the little girl asks him for a family. It brings tears to my eyes every time
Date: 12/9/2007 4:35:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15675    Thanks guys! Lol Kurt I know that but she still did a cover of it . Last Christmas has been done to DEATH! Your right every store I walk into during Xmas EVERY YEAR he's giving his heart away. Poor fool
