Date: 11/21/2007 2:05:00 PM From Authorid: 46530 I would think that as the landlords are in the property and own all items in that property they can say whatever they want if not stipulated in your contract. They would have to provide some means for you to clean your dishes etc but as the sink is available that's covered. You could see about terminating your contract under some rule or another concerning standards of living not meeting expectations but you would probably lose out financially. If you want to live there then you have to live up to their standards, if you don't then find somewhere else. That's the problem with house sharing, you can't set your own rules. |
Date: 11/21/2007 5:30:00 PM From Authorid: 25481 Im in a lease too until May. I have 3 OTHER room mates and Im not really fed up with them personally I just don't really like the way they live. ONe girl refuses to put in for groceries but feels that whatever is in the pantry or fridge she is entitled to. I ALSO had to buy my OWN fridge for my room. So I am pretty much living in a dorm in my OWN trailer which is in MY name. So I am working on getting me an apartment once my lease goes out. With 0 room mates. |
Date: 11/21/2007 9:12:00 PM From Authorid: 52489 the woman sounds like an OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) type of person, and nothing you say or do will please her. If your lease stipulates that you cannot use the dishwasher, and you signed it, then you're up a creek. My advice is to start looking for another place to live, and grit your teeth. But do not deliberately aggravate your landlords. Their opinion of you will be taken into account at the next place where you rent. |
Date: 11/26/2007 11:59:00 AM From Authorid: 18527 You don't really have a right to the dishwasher, sorry. I'd recommend using paper plates. I have to say I kind of sympathize with the landlords because I have a tenant (who is my best friend but if he wasn't he would be sooo gone) who broke the door off of my dryer balancing his laundry basket on it, and tried to put a 6 gallon stock pot in the dishwasher just yesterday. I told him to hand wash it because it's way too big. Reasonable accomodations don't include dishwashers. They are a luxury. Maybe you can invest in a small countertop model and that way you can take it with you when you move. |

Ya but Keithra their reasoning is not sane. In an update to this when I woke up that day my other roommate gave me the full story since the landlords were gone to vacation. Apparently this crazy woman swore there were clean dishes in there (I recall seeing food on them but this is beyond the point; there were like 3 other dishes in there) and that I had ruined it by filling both racks with dirty dishes. She literally began CRYING and THROWING the dishes in the sink instead of just doing them. In my opinion a sane person (even if those dishes had been clean) woulda been annoyed at best and just let the other roommate finish the load as she had planned instead of having to wash it all by hand. In my opinion if you didnt want someone to use the dishwasher it should be said in the lease. When I told my landlord that he said he 'didnt know itd be a problem'. And both of their reasonings are not sane (his only reason is it upset her over said logic above). I just decided to sneak them at night...forget it I dont care. I havent broken anything or done anything wrong and I spent enough years with crazy people...I dont mind moving. |

I think these people will drive you nuts til you move out! Let's see... watch TV with earphones on, take a flashlight to go to the bathroom, and wash all dishes by hand. Aside from the obvious (look for another place ASAP) be sure you follow that lease to the letter. Give written notice of your intent to move 60 days before the termination of your lease (or whatever is spelled out in your papers) and have it delivered via certified mail. In the meantime... I wonder if you can switch rooms with the loft lady? Would that solve the light and TV problems? Good luck honey! |
Date: 1/21/2008 8:50:00 PM From Authorid: 47218 Hee. The silly thing is, the dishwasher-- as long as it's fully loaded-- is way more conservative of energy and water than handwashing. Plus, I'm sure you're probably having to wash dishes the really wasteful way--just a few at a time with the water running-- rather than filling up the sink and washing a whole bunch at once. It amazes me that anyone would choose to handwash dishes these days (except for ones that you have to handwash). There seems to be this old-fashioned mindset that dishwashers are a lazy convenience and that handwashing is superior. In actuality-- dishwashers conserve time, effort, water, energy, and they sanitize dishes much better than what most people do through handwashing. (off soapbox) |
