I’ve recently watched the film, The Core, again. One of the characters, Dr Zimsky, really irritates the heck out of me. He is the epitome of all know-it-alls; the condescending tone of voice, the arrogance of his words, the belief how can anyone else possibly know anything when I’m around?
As you’ve probably guessed, I’m not a fan of know-it-alls. They believe that they’re right and you’re wrong. It doesn’t matter who you are or if you have more qualifications or experience than they do, you’re wrong so you’d better get used to it when they’re around!
They’ll happily state their opinions as if they’re facts but they won’t give your opinions due consideration even if they are as equally valid as their own. They’ll even go so far as to argue with known facts you might have just imparted.
They may even try to talk over you as you express your opinion. They’re certainly not interested in anything you have to say, after all, what would you know?
The sheer arrogance of it! Grr!
Consequently, this was my favourite scene in the film…
Col. Robert Iverson: People. Doctors Zimsky and Keyes? You guys are our resident geophysicists, so what do you make of this? Dr. Conrad Zimsky: The mantle is a chemical hodgepodge of, a, variety of elements... Dr. Ed 'Braz' Brazzelton to Zimsky: Say it with me: “I don't know.”
For a know-it-all to admit they don’t actually know something would be akin to stepping into an abyss. It must be a really scary prospect for them. It’s simply beyond my imagination how scary it would be for them to say, “I don’t know.” All I know is that when I say it, it doesn’t hurt, I’m still alive and I’ve just opened myself up to learning something new. Now that’s got me really excited; I love learning!
There’s no shame in not knowing something. We cannot know everything about everything. It’s impossible. We all know different things and just because one person may know about a subject while another doesn’t, it doesn’t make the person who doesn’t know the subject any less intelligent for not knowing. It just means they haven’t learnt it yet.
As Byron Katie says, “The ‘I know’ mind is a limited, confused, frightened, prideful mind.”
