How do you start a "walk-a-thon" looking for ideas.......illy

I have a friend that I would like to start a walk-a-thon. Not sure how to go about it - I have emails out to a lot of companies asking the same question.  If you have any ideas please let me know.

Her website is www.OurLittlePrincess2002.com

Here is a sample of the letter I sent:

Hello, I am writing on behalf of Rachel Williams and her family. Rachel is recovering from Leukemia. The family is in financial distress and I was writing to see if there are programs to support them. I was sitting and thinking about this for a while - I know its on a complete different level, but our troops get some "breaks" when at war (I'm am totally grateful to them). But, what about Cancer patients? Is there anyway that a family can retain their home due to medical bills? Rachel has to feel terrible about the stress her disease is causing the family. How do parents, families, households survive? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to know how to (if you have the info) start a "walk a thon" for her/the family. Thank you again!

Date: 8/3/2007 5:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i think as a starting place you need to get a few legal aspects covered(like a licence to run a charity even if it's a 1 time thing) then from there your best start is to contact the media.. paper, news stations.. and try to get some air time to advertise create some interest.. plus consider if it's a larger walk athon where will it be held? will it disrupt traffic? if your using city streets you MAY have to get permits for that, same will probably go for city parks/state parks... so i guess lol my suggestion for the best place to start would be to go to your local city hall and ask them
Date: 8/3/2007 8:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 11341    My first stop would be like Mid said, the local city hall or court house. 2nd thing I would do is find everyone willing to walk so when you call the TV stations or news paper (lots of exposure that way) you already have a bunch of people waiting for sponsors. I hope she continues to get better Rachel and her family are in my prayers. Very sweet of you to want to do this illy.
Date: 8/3/2007 9:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 21203    Thank you for the info - luckily we have a great park system and I was thinking of using that particular track. I think I already have a lot of what you mentioned lined up. I know some contacts from my city - a County Judge (he can help with the Chamber of Commerce) - and someone from our local newspaper. My parents ALWAYS told us "never any bridges". I have never thought about what it takes to get one of these going...I know its late in the year but they really need the support. Thank you for your input!!! illy

Date: 8/3/2007 9:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    also try contacting a place that does custom printing/promotional items like screen printing, embriodery.. some will donate or even be a sponsor.. others may do the items at cost what can be really helpful so you can have things like hats, T-shirts, maybe arm bands or something

Date: 8/3/2007 10:14:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 21203    DMK that site ROCKS! Mid - I take care of our booster club for our baseball league - I am SO excited - I already know of a screen printer, copy place (I know the owners) and as you can see I am SOOO shy - I wonder if I will have the courage to talk to them? I am SOOO kidding. (I wonder where my boys get "that" from???)
Date: 8/3/2007 10:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    ohh just thought of a few other things lol you can try contacting places like grocery stores that may sponsor or donate or set up a tent at the walkathon.. and places like donut shops may give you day olds(what taste just as fine) for free(or maybe even fresh!) i remember doing a bit of that kinda stuff while doing film projects.. if you offer then something in return.. say an advertising spot in a flyer or sign something that gets set up the day of and on all the paperwork they will often give money or product in return(heck a number of pizza places would give free pizza just to put thier name in the end credits)
