Energy Drinks....your opinion please....

I know how popular these energy drinks are; I remember when Jolt came out (NO I'm NOT old! LOL) My son is 11 (ok 11 1/2) and he wants to try a Monster drink. I have talked to other adults and one told me that his heart started to race.

I'm sure one wont kill him. I let him drink Pepsi/Coke when we are out - I dont buy it for home. I dont "forbid" him from caffiene (or chocolate) just try not to over do it.

Anyway, your opinion please....(and experiences....)

(Funny - I just switched my coffee to half caff...I just cannot do the caffiene as much as I used too)

Thank you! illy

Date: 5/26/2007 5:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 56369    Those things are usually recommended for people at least 15yrs old. I wouldnt recommend it, for the simple fact that he shouldnt have it so young. he would be drinking more caffine then yourself
Date: 5/26/2007 5:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 11341    http://www.drinkmyact.com/badenergy.html Now keep in mind that this site is a big advertisement for another energy drink but I have heard alot of what they say but I cant seem to find the facts right now lol. I wouldnt let mine drink them though, I do know that much. I miss you illy!
Date: 5/26/2007 6:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 63836    Im 13 and ive had most of these, and as long as he only one can or less for the day he should be fine, at least i always am. My friend who is 14 had 4 in 30 minutes(which was very dangerous) didnt die or anything, so i think he will be fine with one, and plus he probably wont even like monster as i thought it tasted odd.
Date: 5/26/2007 6:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 14464    I had a half of a can of an energy drink and my heart was racing and I could not stop moving all night I thougthI was going to die my chest hurt so badly. I was 17 at the time and had been addictede to soda at the time so that shows you how bad it is. I did have some soda that morning, but didn't drink much and deffinatelt had none after the energy drink. I do not recommend anyone of any age to drink them. My uncle found a Jeff Gordon Evergy drink that has little caffeine in it, but has a lot of vitamins that give you energy. He said the caffeine level is about the same as a Pepsi. He hasn't drank it yet so I am not sure how it works with your body, but it sounds like a better one to try.
Date: 5/26/2007 6:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 19772    I seriously doubt that one would hurt him but I know some countries have actually put a ban on anyone under 18 drinking energy drinks because kids use them to get energy bursts. (Like by drinking 5 and 6 at a clip) They can be very dangerous if alot are consumed in a short amount of time. Personally I have yet to find any that actually taste good, lol, so I don't drink them. I stick to coffee, the original energy drink. ~Take care~
Date: 5/26/2007 6:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i think too many people drink energy drinks who shouldn't... they are not healthy for you they cause your heart to race... same goes for sport drinks like gatorade those are meant for people who do heavy sports and exersize or while people work out.. they arnt meant for a person sitting around playing video games.. they are filled with caffiene and sugar
Date: 5/26/2007 7:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 7830    if it were my son Id let him try just half of one. Energy drinks pack a punch!
Date: 5/26/2007 8:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 19586    They make my heart race. I cannot drink them. My hubby drinks one a day.
Date: 5/26/2007 8:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 26733    Hi, Im only 22 but I believe being that we live in a country riddled with all sorts of addictions varying from credit cards to rock cocaine. Its funny how it isn’t a MASS media frenzy on the addictive natures of caffeine and caffeine related products, They get addicted to the ‘quick fix’ or pick up from the sugar and caffeine in the drink. Once one red bull doesn’t do they trick they will buy a case…I see it as a subtle growing problem (in the long run).
Date: 5/26/2007 10:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 16865    I drank monster low carb and I got SO SICK! Now I can't even stand to smell it. I also tried another one, I can't remember which one though, and my heart raced so wildly all I could do was lay in bed... I was trembling and the room was spinning and my heart felt like it was about to jump out of my throat and my whole body felt like it was humming on another frequency. I will NEVER drink those things again. Tell him if he REALLY wants an energy drink, try espresso. It's about the same effect without the uncontrollable heart racing and tremors and all that. It was terrifying. My hubby swares by them though. But I will NOT let my children have them. They can have soda first.
Date: 5/26/2007 10:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 35720    I love the drink "Spike".. it's like liquid speed. lol.
Date: 5/26/2007 11:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 36850    hey I drinky Illy coffee. Craziness.
Date: 5/27/2007 7:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 10722    Just make sure he does something active after drinking one, otherwise it'd be a waste.
Date: 5/27/2007 7:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 37843    I don't know about your son drinking them because they have a lot of caffiene and sugar in them. I used to drink them on a regular basis (when I'd work third shift on a friday and make a 5 hour drive home right after I got off) and I didn't have any adverse reactions (except to the taste of some of them ewww). Monster has a sugar free kind, it has the blue tab on the can.
Date: 5/27/2007 7:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 21203    I talked to him he said he had half a can. He told me he really didnt like the taste and even with 1/2 a can his hands started to shake. He said he wont have another. I was not around when he had this drink - I'm not happy it was sold to him. (hopefully, he has got this out of his system - to try it that is) Thanks for your responses!!
Date: 5/27/2007 9:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    illuminator i'm glad he didnt like them.. and you brought up a valid point i don't think they should be sold to children or just anyone who wants to buy them in the wrong hands or too many they can cause serious health issues
Date: 6/15/2007 2:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 55344    i'm 17, and have drank at least 3 16oz monsters a day for about 3 months.
