I am anxiously awaiting a job offer from a large medical school/teaching hospital on Galveston Island. It all looks good so far, but nothing official yet. Should be hearing something next week. We have been trying to move down there since November, after my mother-in-law (85 years old, very spry, loves to quilt and sew) had a heart attack. She lived about 10 minutes north of Galveston. Since then, she has been living with my husband's brother and his wife, after 30 years of living alone, so you can imagine the culture shock she is experiencing. They moved down there, and rented a house about 30 minutes further North from Galveston, so that she is not alone.
She is in good physical condition, no problems since the heart attack and she feels great. She just needs some more of her family close to her to help with taking her to doc appointments, wal-mart, etc. And she is determined not to move away from that area, so our option is to get closer to her.
Some of you know about the jam we have once a month at the little coffee shop in Galveston. We currently live about 4 hours North of Galveston, so we have been making the drive at least once a month for the last 5 or so years. We have a circle of friends down there that are the greatest, most loving and loyal and intelligent people I've ever met. So these guys are all absolutely thrilled to have us moving down to live on the island full time. We have never had such wonderful people in our lives, and to be around them is to know true happiness, especially when you combine it with the magic of the music that comes out of the jam.
One of these friends has a house that we are going to be able to rent, a giant two story Victorian that survived the 1900 Storm. It's plenty big enough for us to have a "mother-in-law" suite, and still have our own space. We are not sure yet if she is going to live with us full time or just come stay part time, we will work all that out when we get there. First, I have to get the job!
These are big changes for me, scary but oh so exciting and close enough to touch. I will be updating this post when I get the word. Please, my USM family, send all your good prayers and thoughts and wishes towards the success of my journey.
