Buried Alive

My mother swears this is true: My great-great grandmother, ill for quite some time, finally passed away after laying in a coma for several days. My great-great grandfather was devastated beyond belief, as she was his one true love and they had been married over 50 years. They were married so long it seemed as if they knew each other's innermost thoughts. After the doctor pronounced her dead, my great-great grandfather insisted that she was not. They had to literally pry him away from his wife's body so they could ready her for burial.

Now, back in those days they had backyard burial plots and did not drain the body of its fluids. They simply prepared a proper coffin and committed the body (in its coffin) to its permanent resting place. Throughout this process, my great-great grandfather protested so fiercely that he had to be sedated and put to bed.

His wife was buried and that was that. That night he woke to a horrific vision of his wife hysterically trying to scratch her way out of the coffin. He phoned the doctor immediately and begged to have his wife's body exhumed. The doctor refused, but my great-great grandfather had this nightmare every night for a week, each time frantically begging to have his wife removed from the grave. Finally the doctor gave in and, together with local authorities, exhumed the body.

The coffin was pried open and to everyone's horror and amazement, my great-great grandmother's nails were bent back and there were obvious scratches on the inside of the coffin.

Date: 5/11/2007 4:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 12072    I'm terrified of being buried alive...I'm so glad they do so much these days that it's pretty much impossible to be!
Date: 5/11/2007 4:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 61901    I can believe this, many people have woke up in the morgue after being pronounced dead. Thanks for sharing this interesting post.
Date: 5/11/2007 5:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    This is real Nightmare material! I seem to recall that there was a time that they had bells & a rope coming out of coffins to avoid such a thing. I know I read/saw that somewhere. *shiver*

Date: 5/11/2007 7:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 34663    I love these stories, I realy love the one by Edgar Allen Poe, and this is a real thing, some peopl have a condition where their heart slows down so much they appear dead, and then they are buried, usualy these people have special coffins with a string attached to a bell above the surface do he or she can ring the bell if buried alive

Date: 12/4/2007 10:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 7849    did u you know that the reason edgar allan poe wrote that, is because being buried alive was one of his biggest fears?
Date: 1/21/2008 7:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 12072    and I'm still terrified of being buried alive.... :-)
Date: 10/4/2008 5:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 64390    There are many stories of people being buried alive. As others have mentioned there were items used to try to keep that from happening. The bells, horns, etc were good examples. Who was supposed to stay in the cemetary at night to listen? At one time didn't they used to have guards (caretakers) that lived in the cemetaries? Not a job I'd apply for - I'm not afraid of the dead but could be of someone coming into the cemetary at night. (LOL)
Date: 8/17/2018 10:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 998    Since there are so many stories like this one, I certainly hope the doctors are sure I'm completely dead before I'm buried or cremated.
Date: 9/19/2018 4:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    There will be fear of me being buried alive...I'm getting cremated.
Date: 8/27/2019 7:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 67522    Bone chilling!
