This is real Nightmare material! I seem to recall that there was a time that they had bells & a rope coming out of coffins to avoid such a thing. I know I read/saw that somewhere. *shiver*  |

I love these stories, I realy love the one by Edgar Allen Poe, and this is a real thing, some peopl have a condition where their heart slows down so much they appear dead, and then they are buried, usualy these people have special coffins with a string attached to a bell above the surface do he or she can ring the bell if buried alive  |

There are many stories of people being buried alive. As others have mentioned there were items used to try to keep that from happening. The bells, horns, etc were good examples. Who was supposed to stay in the cemetary at night to listen? At one time didn't they used to have guards (caretakers) that lived in the cemetaries? Not a job I'd apply for - I'm not afraid of the dead but could be of someone coming into the cemetary at night. (LOL)  |
