A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco. "Mom and Dad, I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a friend I'd like to bring home with me."

"Sure," they replied, "we'd love to meet him."

"There's something you should know the son continued, "he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mind and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us."

"I'm sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live."

"No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us."

"Son," said the father, "you don't know what you're asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can't let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He'll find a way to live on his own."

At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide. The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son. They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn't know, their son had only one arm and one leg.

The parents in this story are like many of us. We find it easy to love those who are good-looking or fun to have around, but we don't like people who inconvenience us or make us feel uncomfortable. We would rather stay away from people who aren't as healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are. Thankfully, there's someone (God) who won't treat us that way. Someone who loves us with an unconditional love that welcomes us into the forever family, regardless of how messed up we are. *******************************************************************************

Found this online. Thought it was pretty good.

Date: 5/2/2007 8:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 8243    I have read this story before as well and it is very sad. I have found comfort in knowing that my family and my husband's family will except all of us the way we are. We have had some misfortunes like this and no one was ever turned away. Thank you for sharing.

Date: 5/2/2007 9:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 8905    Its not really a matter of if its true, its more the point behind the story I think.
Date: 5/2/2007 9:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 15070    it is very thought-provoking. It reminds us of many things. Thank you for this wonderful post.
Date: 5/2/2007 9:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 26803    It is a shame that this man didn't tell the truth, true or not. The unconditional love of a parent most often over rules any feeling toward a friend. By his comming home, this man could have changed his parent's views toward the disabled. Personal experience: My Grandfather used to think that AIDS was a a good thing. It got rid of homosexuals. Then he found out his son had AIDS. He took his son home and cared for him until the day he died. Proof that people can change given the chance.
Date: 5/2/2007 9:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 19772    I've also read this story before and it is a good one. It really makes you think. I know how I am and I also know how my family is. I take in all strays whether it's animals or people who just need to get back on their feet, my mother isn't quite as open minded. But like Coenleaf said, sometimes some people only need a real eye opener to make them change their ways of thinking. ~Take care~
Date: 5/2/2007 11:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 63194    I understand its message, but because it is not true, I think it is disgusting to use a troop in a false story.
Date: 5/2/2007 11:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 63194    That is, with the intent of trying to give a message - And as has been said, a parents love for their own children is far different than that for a friend.
