Parents of Autistic Children: How many of "us" are there around here?

  Author:  10245  Category:(Discussion) Created:(4/11/2007 6:52:00 AM)
This post has been Viewed (1026 times)

My curiosity has been piqued from all the recent posts and replies regarding Autism and other Spectrum Disorders...

It has also occurred to me that if we were to get everyone to respond to one post, we'd have a good resource for support when we need it, from people who can relate to the sometimes insane thing that we call "Life with Autism".

I'll start.

My 9 year old son, Collin, is mildly Autistic... technically PDD-NOS; but since no one is familiar with that term, we use "Autism" to make it more understandable to those who don't have to know all the proper terms.... without the big long explanation of him not quite fitting the entire diagnosis like a round peg. He's more like trying to shove a square peg into a round hole.

If you'd like to offer your support to other parents learning to deal with how to help their children though the maze of confusion, red tape and frustrations; along with helping them to celebrate the joy of milestones, like only those who have conquered those challenges can appreciate, feel free to raise your hand and leave your autograph below.

Thank you so much! :o)

Date: 4/11/2007 7:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 63575    I'm over tired and so there for slower than usual. I also suffer from Dyslexia (mild case unless stressed or over tired) most people believe that the words are backwards, actually it's the letters themselves "post" I could see it as: "do5t" and other bizare combinations. I've worked with students that were diagnosed with Autism but it's been a while, my knowledge on the subject is a few years old now.
Date: 4/11/2007 7:37:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    my cousin has a form of dyslexia. He sees some thing flipped.. like a stop sign might appear as POTS and sometimes he might see it upside down, but I think it's always the whole thing or whole word that's reversed.
Date: 4/11/2007 7:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 40350    I have no children, but as I've mentioned in a previous post, my cousin has a form of autism. *hugs to you all*
Date: 4/11/2007 8:01:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    Do you know which form, Shane? Pervasive Development Disorder, Sensory Integration Dysfunction, Asperger's Syndrome or Autism spectrum Disorder?
Date: 4/11/2007 8:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 1799    No children yet, but learning disabilities run in my family. My mom had one, my brother had the same one, my cousins have one, and so on. I know there's a high possibility that my children will have one, and I'll make sure I do everything I can to help them.
Date: 4/11/2007 8:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 62998    growing up we constantly had to watch our cousin Mark, he had autism. Watching him was a nightmare. To a 7 and 8 year olds, a 5 year old autistic child is really a nightmare, he would pull our hair, bite us, and when he really got frustrated he'd start to toss our stuff all over our room. It was literally a nightmare. That was of course we, as kids, didn't know what was wrong with him, we just thought he was overly hyper, nope!. When we were older it was explained to us that he was autistic. Then we felt bad.
Date: 4/11/2007 8:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 63026    i work with 2 autistic brothers 4 and 5 years old in our preschool room. The 4 year old brother is smart and can talk and knows his colors. The 5 year old can't talk and they both wear diapers. They cry alot, but other than that, they are so sweet and they don't act out like hitting.

Date: 4/11/2007 12:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 4887    *raises hand* 8 year old daughter with mild-moderate autism.
Date: 4/11/2007 12:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 46527    I don't have a child with autism, but I do have 2 in my form group at school and teach many more each day.
