When I was a boy, a certain Native American (An Edisto indian) named Mr. Lightfoot took me under his wing at the behest of my grandmother. I spent many a day poking around the river and woods by myself. Mr. Lightfoot knew I was special from the beginning and we became very good friends. He taught me to hunt, fish and survive off the land. Most of all he taught me to respect nature. To respect nature is to respect our mother who gives life to all. He use to say this all the time.
The most difficult lession I had to learn was to "Be Still Inside" as he would say. We would go into the forest to hunt herbs, roots or to maybe set snares for rabbits. Mr. lightfoot would say; "Look what your doing son" You're scaring off all the animals! Go over there and sit down, be still inside. He may go off for an hour or so and my feelings would be hurt. He would always give me a big hug and we would go on our merry way.
One day, he said; "There you go again, making all that noise inside your head"! He came over, took me by my hand and led to a spot. " Sit here, put your hands in the earth". Within a few minutes I started to feel a warmth and calm inside. He looked over at me with a smile and said; "Do you feel your mother holding you?. I started to feel aware of my surrounding like never before. Mr. Lightfoot explained that before we went into the forest we had to become one with nature and not every spot was good to sit. I had to learn how to find my "Place of Power" Once we connected with earth, the animals would see us as one of them.
I have never forgotten that lession. In my spiritual journey into paganism, I have come to learn this is Called "Grounding and Centering". You can imagine how I felt as I began to read about this technique I learned as a boy.
