Family and friends seek answers about crash fatal to motorcyclist

Michael Ferraresi The Arizona Republic Jan. 2, 2007 12:00 AM

SCOTTSDALE - Family and friends of a 24-year-old motorcyclist are seeking answers to what caused him to be thrown from his new sport motorcycle while out for a Sunday drive on Scottsdale Road.

Matthew Busey, who moved to Scottsdale just months ago from his home state of Illinois, suffered serious injuries after he lost control of his bike near Scottsdale Road and Earll Drive on Dec. 10.

Busey died at nearby Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn shortly after the wreck in which an unidentified car could have veered into his lane, causing him to lose control, according to the police report. However, the cause of the crash has not been confirmed.

Lucas Gerler, 23, said he and Busey ate brunch at Sugar Daddy's restaurant that morning.

Busey was not wearing a helmet, Gerler told police, because he lived in the area and was only driving about one mile that day.

Gerler said he and others close to Busey are frustrated with the lack of information on how the wreck took place.

Scottsdale police are investigating, but it was unclear whether the car, which Gerler described to officers as a maroon sedan, caused Busey to lose control and fall.

Gerler also moved to Scottsdale recently and was set to work with Busey at a local office of careerbuilder.com.

Date: 1/2/2007 1:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 14464    Thats sad, I live in AZ and never heard of this. Being on a motorcycle is dangerous because other cars don't pay attention to them.
Date: 1/2/2007 1:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 28848    Motorcycles are harder to see in your blind spots than cars are. You have to really look before switching lanes.
Date: 1/2/2007 1:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    Wear a helmet, boots, gloves, eye protection. Cars have a nasty habit of pulling or turning in front of bikes even when they see them. I assume every car at an intersection or driveway is going to pull out in front of me, and I get proven right all too often.
Date: 1/2/2007 1:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 21839    That is so sad, my brother almost got killed in a motorcycle accident. He was hit head on by a van, survived by an inch or two... my heart breaks for this family. It is harding not having the answers you need.
Date: 1/2/2007 7:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    One of my sons spent more time laying on the roadways after some inconsiderate drivers knocked him off his bike many times, this story is sad, I hope his family can get to the bottom of how it all happened and they can get some closure...
