I heard of such things and I saw it with my own eyes, but still can't believe it

Those day after Thanksgiving sales; after Christmas sales? Yeah, I'd heard about them, and how people get up in the wee hours to be first in line to get the good deals, but c'mon.....I never thought I'd see thousands camping outside the store at....... 10:30 P.M. !

A friend had drove by the BEST BUY store; saw all the people in lawn chairs, blankets, and what not; then ask me to go take a look. People were stacked up 3 deep, shivering in the cold wind. I couldn't believe my eyes.

Anyone out there done this before? Whatever could there possibly be in the store that would make someone stand or sit out in the cold overnight for?

Date: 11/23/2006 10:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 52155    That is completely silly, but I guess some will do anything to save a buck or two. You won't find me out there waiting, or even shopping tomorrow, though.
Date: 11/23/2006 11:00:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 24924    Me either, Eddo. I can't stand crowded stores and malls; avoid them like the plague. I tried to think of ANYTHING that would make me do something like that and I can't . Heck, I can't think of anything that , even if it was FREE, I'd sit outdoors overnight for.
Date: 11/23/2006 11:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 14464    well a lot of the sales are extremely good when they open. I would never wait outside like that, but I do understand wanting to get the best deal ever.
Date: 11/23/2006 11:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 18516    I've been hearing about people hanging around best buy and every other place waiting to get their hands on the new playstation 3. It's crazy, sitting in the cold at night, camping out, waiting on an over-priced game system. I can't even stand going to walmart when the holidays roll around. It's madness!
Date: 11/23/2006 11:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 10391    Oh I've done it and would love to do it again lolol. You save more than a buck or two if you are after somethign worthwhile, but it is a mad house and people do get nasty, luckily I never ran into the jerks I see on tv and hear about.
Date: 11/23/2006 11:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 63302    alot of people want one of those new game things.....
Date: 11/24/2006 12:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 11341    We did last year, they had West Coast Chopper bikes for $25 each! We didnt get the choppers but we did get 2 different bikes for $25 each and a DVD player for 10 bucks. I will NOT go out again like that....
Date: 11/24/2006 1:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 53909    My husband and I went to Best Buy one year. We didn't wait outside long unlike some of the people that were camped out there. We were out there long enough to just walk into the store, but when we went to purchase our stuff, we waited in line for almost 3 hours, I kid you not.
Date: 11/24/2006 1:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 4144    those people are nuts!! i won't be shopping! i'll be at work! i take wed. and thurs. off and work on friday. i usually spend over half the day cooking anyway on wed. might as well just take the day!
Date: 11/24/2006 1:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 8024    I used to follow the greatful dead around so nothing really suprises me .. but I've never camped out for a video game or to go shopping .. I like to shopw when the stores are slow ..c
Date: 11/24/2006 2:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 34078    Half the fun is in the wait!
Date: 11/24/2006 2:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 15157    We did it once for a free bike for Ricky..let me tell you "NEVER AGAIN" it was not worth it.
Date: 11/24/2006 3:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 15675    Im not that crazy but I've seen one thing that I couldnt believe :P. Last week I had to get some things at Target and there were people camping out outside. I thought maybe it was either a protest or an employee strike or something because they had chairs and everything. No signs so I was like 'huh' and ignored it. The next day I went to a dif Target late at night and again people camping out but this time there was a sign: the line for the Nintendo Wii starts here. So apparently the first group of people camped out 2 DAYS ahead of the release...
Date: 11/24/2006 4:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 23075    my daughter and two of her friends did this with new playstation3. She was second in line and got one.
Date: 11/24/2006 5:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 64162    My mom got up at 4 this morning and went shopping for the big "Day After Thnksgiving Sale". We'll have to see if she makes it back alive or not..
Date: 11/24/2006 6:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 1799    I don't understand doing that, but then again, I have a social phobia and the crowd would freak me out, so I guess that has something to do with it. lol. That and I like my sleep too much to get up for the early bird stuff. But some people really jump on those things. Anything to save a buck...
Date: 11/24/2006 6:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 1799    Wow, Paddy... your daughter is lucky. The PS3's are so expensive!
Date: 11/24/2006 7:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 62849    Heck no!! I've seen it, but I won't do it. I'm sure the deals are fantastic, but you know, there are going to be Holiday sales and Early Bird specials and Saturday sales and what not from now until Dec. 24th, and starting again Dec. 26th. So as far as saving money goes? Today's not the only day to do it. I LOL at their camping out in front of Best Buy... at least camp out in front of a store that you can one-stop shop.
Date: 11/24/2006 7:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 62849    And the only reason I would sit outdoors over night would be if a store promised me and my own personal invited list of people "you guys will be the only ones in the store for an hour or two this morning" and gave us REALLY good deals. Then I'd sit outside with my family over night.
Date: 11/24/2006 7:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 17516    Nothing for me. I like to shop, but princess that I am, my comfort is first, and nothing is worth being that miserable for that long.
Date: 11/24/2006 7:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 22433    thats what people here do for Boxing Day...(Canada's black friday)..i've never done it. I was in one store for a total of 5 minutes last year and I had to leave because I was getting sick of bumping into people everytime i moved so much as an INCH.
Date: 11/24/2006 7:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 55386    I saw people doing that the day the Wii came out on my way to work, lol.
Date: 11/24/2006 7:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 55386    Black Friday? I've never heard of Black Friday here. It's always boxing day.... Ahh, I dunno, lol.
Date: 11/24/2006 9:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 64110    Yeah my friend called me earlier and said she left her house at 1 a.m to get to the store to wait in line for some kind of gameboy mini or something that they had for $39.
Date: 11/24/2006 12:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 7830    Ive seen this before too and I cant honestly understand any of it!
Date: 11/24/2006 1:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 28848    I never have, and never would camp out in a parking lot..lol.
Date: 11/24/2006 2:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 11341    Oh, I have to say that I didnt "camp out" We were IN the store standing in line LOL
Date: 11/24/2006 3:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 47218    The deals are really good. Plus you have those early bird specials. The numbers on this day are especially important for retailers, Wall Street-wise, so they'll do whatever it takes to lure people out to shop. You have all these discount retailers like Walmart and Target trying to outdo each other, and you get all these really cheapo deals. However, I am much too busy sleeping off the Turkey from the day before, so no I've never been out myself. I am a big fan of the day after Christmas sales, however.
Date: 11/24/2006 4:01:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 24924    Well well well...guess what guys? Looks like I'm rather forced to go out into the shopping madness. *groan* And no, it can't wait. My refrigerator totally went kaput. I had a guy come out and he said it is done for; shot...not fixable; and he added: "Go get a new one". So, got my track shoes on; took a shot of brandy; and here I go to Lowe's or Nebraska Furniture Mart. Yeah....I'm so thrilled. Ugh
Date: 11/24/2006 5:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 11341    Ack! Sorry to hear that Thinker. Good Luck!
Date: 11/24/2006 5:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 63871    My christmas shopping gets done about 3 days before christmas. I never have any problem finding good deals, or what i want. I don't see why people make such a big deal about today.
Date: 11/24/2006 8:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 59876    i am so sorry you have to go out in that. please be so careful. i hope you didn't have too much stuff in the fridge, but with it having been turkey day, that isn't likely lol. how fun though, i'd love to shop for a new fridge. i love appliances. next time, i'm not going for side by side, it's too unruly for the holidays.
Date: 11/24/2006 8:56:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 24924    The traffic was brutal; masses of people everywhere. I'm fried. Found a refrigerator I liked and will pick it up tomorrow. Yeah, it was on sale for $700.00 . Big deal. riiight. Doh, I had to throw away a lot of stuff. It was a mess. There were fuzz balls underneath that fridge when the guys pulled it out. I mean, who cleans under their fridge? Ain't no way I could move a 400 lb fridge anyway. Water everywhere. I farmed out some stuff to a friend's house; and got it all cleaned out. After getting home, I got on the phone with Miss Priss. She really bust my sides with her funny one liners. Yeah, got me in a real happy mood which I sorely needed after today.
Date: 11/24/2006 9:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 59876    i'm glad to hear it worked out and you made it home safe miss priss is a doll isn't she i'm glad you are getting into a happy mood great price for a fridge by the way, and no, i never ever ever clean out from under or behind my fridge
Date: 11/27/2006 10:29:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 24924    I went back over and reread all y'alls replies; and it got me to thinking. See, I don't have kids, so therefore I'm sure I might feel a bit different about this topic IF I did. Kids are expensive; and they really like and often request things for Christmas that cost a lot of money. I remember last year, a cute little red-headed boy about 9 yrs old came up to me and it was his birthday. I was so smitten by this sweet , good natured child, and ask him what he'd like for his birthday. (oh dear, I had no clue). He smiled and said something about a GameBoy something-or-other. I had no idea what he was talking about, so I said: "Sure, honey, whatever you want"; and off we went to the store. I had no clue what I was in for. We get to the store and went to the electronics thing-a-ma-gigs department. I ask him to pick it out and I'd get a sales person to help. When he brought it to me, My eyes bugged out. I had NO idea those things cost so much! Yikes! It was around $130:00 (somewhere in the area). Well, I HAD promised him he could get anything he wanted.....right? So, I got it for him; he was one thrilled little kid......but....it taught me a lesson to find out about what something IS....and or the cost, before promising. Yeah, I suppose in cases where you have kids; you need something; and money is really tight....yeah...who knows if I'd be camping out at a store or not. But right now, as it is, I'm kinda like what Karma Killer said: I'm a bit of a princess.
Date: 11/27/2006 10:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 4144    LOL! been there thinker!! i'm so stupid that i have been down that road more than once!! now i never say yes or ok unless i know what the kids are talking about!!
Date: 11/27/2006 10:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 12072    I go to the after christmas sales every year--ya never know what you'll find, and half the fun of it is pushing through crabby shoppers at 6am! hehe! Or watching people literally run through the store...ooo, now I'm excited for the 26th!!! :-D Guess I'm just crazy...!!
Date: 12/1/2006 7:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 12823    I would never do that but a couple of years ago, I was at the store by 6 AM (their special day after thanksgiving sale began at 5 AM- special hours) although their regular hours opened at nine or something. Anyways, when I got there, EVERYTHING was gone. All the deals and specials. Thought I was doing it right but I am not competetive enough to camp out with all those people just to save a buck!
Date: 1/2/2007 8:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    it does get bad, my daughter in law went and this is just a small town.
Date: 1/2/2007 8:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 64365    Nope...not me...I'm only a junkie for USM...I don't particularly care for shopping. I'm one of those who gets in, gets what I want, and gets out....I think those people who DO wait in line like in your post must really think what they are after is something they can't live without, so more power to them...though I don't understand it...I'll let them...(smile) Nani
Date: 1/2/2007 9:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 63201    Most likely they were camping to get those insanely-overpriced Wii's to resell on eBay for thousands of dollars. Madness!
Date: 7/24/2007 2:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 21839    thinker, I have kids & doubt there is "deal" that is going to make me go out in the cold over night for hours waiting on a store to open.. my luck I would get to it & put it in a buggy, turn around to pick up something & my buggy would be gone or someone would try to take it from me... there isn't anything worth getting in a physical confrontation about... (material that is) you mess with my family & that is a different story.
Date: 7/24/2007 3:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 59876    one reason i really just loathe holiday shopping is, there is always just a crazy passel of folks with a cart, and or additional family/kids, that are militant and rude, banging into people, pushing, shoving, bumping carts, cars, snaking things, etc. makes me crazy. i hate hate hate people violating my personal space.
