You can't go by anyone's word here. You need to find an authoritative source (that is, some place with credentials). Check the references in this wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-child_policy Looks like there are some good possibilities there. |
Date: 11/17/2006 12:06:00 AM From Authorid: 52489 Overcrowding, and stretched resources. China's government is corrupt, and terribly inefficient, so they're trying to lessen their work by shrinking their population. |
Date: 11/26/2006 10:38:00 PM From Authorid: 40979 I never knew there was a law telling them how many children they could have...geez, I learn something new every day! LOL |

Date: 12/7/2006 6:13:00 AM From Authorid: 24924 I never really could get the hang of the one child policy either until I visited China myself. I visited cities with 10, 12 and 20 million people. Try to imagine living in a city with just one or two million? Then think about 20 million (I believe Shanghai has that many); and then there is Hong Kong, which I'm sure has more. Trying to maneuver down the street with people swarming like flies was a real eye opener for me; and was a bit frightening. I'm serious; I was afraid to cross the streets. It is hard to imagine but overwhelming is the word to describe what I saw and felt. It also made me think of places like India and the stories I had heard from friends who had been there. There has to be some sort of population control. |
Date: 12/9/2006 12:01:00 PM From Authorid: 53634 forced abortion...how terrible. Surely a hefty, and I mean hefty, fine would suffice. Wonder how many 2nd children are being hidden? |
