Stories from "Strange But True"
I was only 13 when on April 1, 1964, an accidental fire left me with second-and-third-degree burns. I was rushed to the hospital, but due to the severity of the burns my veins collapsed. As if in a hellish nightmare, doctors told my mother, Alice Graves, that I had only 15, then 10 then 5 minutes to live.
Mom, numb with anguish, could only watch and pray. Doctors, standing shoulder to shoulder around my bed, worked feverishly. Seconds later a Japanese doctor found a vein, saving my life.
During the time I was in a coma, unaware that my life was in danger. While comatose I saw a friend whom I knew as Belinda Michelle, who had previously died. She asked me to go with her. She had a red balloon and she played with it as we left.
I was thrust into a period of darkness. The darkness was like a swift slide through a warm tunnel. At the tunnel's end was an indescribably beautiful pasture and stream.
Suddenly we were on a ski lift. I was very confused. My friend, sensing this, assured me I would understand. Soon we passed the signs reading 15 miles, 10 miles, 5 miles. The miles on the signs correlated with the doctor's prognoses.
Upon passing the third sign, my friend told me I could go no further. I awoke to excruciating pain. My mom, rushing to my side, handed me a red balloon.
