A Cousin's Untimely Passing

  Author:  18111  Category:(Human Interest) Created:(7/20/2006 9:05:00 AM)

I was just informed that one of my cousins in Cuba passed away overnight. His name is Jorge Mesa de los Santos, he was 56 years old, never married, no children. In the past few months our family here in Miami, Florida, U.S. of A. has lost 7 family members combined & 2 friends of the family. 9 deaths averaging 1.25 per month.

I've lost count of how many coffins I've escorted or been a pall bearer for. At a time when our country's leaders now claim to be spreading democracy over 2 continents away (I exaggerate for effect) I wonder how I can believe them when 250 miles from my house, 90 miles off our coast, a brutal "Socialist this year, Communist last year" dictatorship keeps me from communicating, seeing, sharing the grief with...my family.

An independant newspaperman went on a hunger strike in Cuba a few weeks back in an attempt to get internet access. He vowed to starve to death, not to get it for free, not because he even has a computer, but just to gain one freedom most of the civilized world takes for granted...I wonder if he's passed away as well. My aunt is suffering back on the island the loss of her son to cancer and I have to wonder if doctors here might not have had some recent technique that might have helped, but alas on the island where I was born it would be a criminal act to suggest that there is any better medical care elsewhere than there and I wish that were meant as a joke.

I want to hug my aunt, my father's sister and ease her burden somehow, but I get to ponder this in my central airconditioned home while I watch digital cable on my big screen and submit this self endulgent essay over a fast access DSL "Extreme" connection, while they, back on the island, can only fan themselves with cardboard.

50 years ago Havana put South Beach to shame. Today it's a shame if you've never been to South Beach, just ask Shaq & Wade...or better yet ask every team the Miami Heat defeated at home during the NBA playoffs if maybe they shouldn't have had such a good time there before their next game.

Anyway, remember what Ben Franklin said about a society that was willing to trade some of its liberties for a little more security...that it deserved neither! Don't ever let anyone talk you into giving up your freedoms, not for the terrorists, not for the nuclear arsenalists, not for weapons of mass destruction, not for your children or your children's children, not for any reason, religion, excuse, pretext, explanation, no...not ever. Once lost, freedoms are nearly impossible to regain.

I sound like Thomas Payne or something. I wish I sounded more like Jose Marti, instead I know I sound like the rambling aching heart that beats within me, that beats sadly for the loss of a relative whose pole I will not be allowed to bear no matter how sick and tired my arms may be of it.

Your post reminded me of what our ancestors faught for...for America...not just for them...but US too...and we do take it for granted.
Date: 7/18/2006 10:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    Big O. Please accept my condolenses on the death of your relatives. Once those dictators weasel their way in and get control of the army, it is extremely difficult to go against them. It would be nice to see a ruling party that actually put the needs of the people first. I like the way that you wrote this, my friend. Write on.....
Date: 7/19/2006 12:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 998    Hello my friend. The cross you bear in these passings have become much more painful by having no freedom to express your grief. As humans on this planet, we tend to gather for comfort and support when we loose a loved one. We take it for granted that we will be able to do this, because of the freedoms we enjoy in America. Oscar, I certainly can't say that I know what your going through, because I am so spoiled that I don't have any idea. I do wish the world were different so you could be with your family during this tough time. My prayers are with you.
Date: 7/19/2006 1:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 63575    I shall pray for your friends and family as well as for you - I am deeply touched with what you have written and how you wrote it. I am sorry for what you are going through and I do thank you for your words of advice about not losing our freedoms and holding onto them.
Date: 7/19/2006 3:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 30747    My condolances to you and your family. My uncle passed away this past weekend. 1997 was a very bad year for us. I attended 13 funerals for freinds and family including my aunt, my cousin, my sister and my father. It was unbelieveable. I'm sorry for all your grief.
Date: 7/19/2006 6:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 18261    My deepest condolences to you and the family.**Bells.

I just needed to say my cousin's name out loud somewhere. Thanks to USM for giving me a place to express myself & shout my cousins name.

Date: 7/19/2006 10:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 63725    My heart goes out to you and yours. Freedom is something that spoiled people like me take for granted at times. And one last thought...your reference to sounding like Jose Marti...well you did a great job just being who you are. Thank you for the wake up call. God Bless you and keep you in his arms. HUGS Lisa/Peacelover

Date: 7/19/2006 2:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 62881    I am sorry for the losses you have had...and for the loss of your Cousin Jorge. Maybe one day things will change...in the meantime, stay strong. *Wonderfully written post*
Date: 7/19/2006 5:46:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 18111    Again, let me thank each & every one of you for your very kind words. Let me also thank those who have read & are not able to comment. Your visits are noted & appreciated as well. Every time Jorge's name has been read outside of our native country here on USM it is a tiny victory for freedom, for liberty. For every time his name has passed through the thoughts of a free mind his name has broken the boundries, the chains, that were placed upon the man and although a man's freedom may be taken from him, not the Spirit of Freedom itself!!
Date: 7/20/2006 12:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 55533    omg, i'm so sorry for your loss! That's horrible! It's amazing what most people in America take for granted/ignore. Freedom of speech, religion, and everything wonderful we have fought for. I hope things change for the better for you. You'll be in my thoughts
Date: 7/20/2006 5:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 46320    I am so sorry for your loss, not only for your cousin, but the freedom to go and comfort your family in this sad time. God Bless...
