Truck sale/Trade-in - Mr.Nascar-

HEy ya'll, it's been a while since I been on here, but I need some advice.... I have a 1988 Toyota Pick-up 4x4, standard bed, 3inchs of lift, 32 inch tires and a CB Radio. I personally don't think the truck is big enough. But I love the ability to go off-Road, the gas Mileage ( 30 MPG, 4 cylinder engine), low cost and insurance, and I love the stick Shift. However again it's to small, not enough horsepower, not enough room in the cab, old, and I just want something bigger. I've spotted an 1998 Chevy S-10 ZR2, 4x4, red, v-6, Dual Exhaust. Just what I want, I can add on some lift, tires, high powered lights, brush guard, steel bumper, Winch, Tool Box. ETC. But the other day I drove outside of my subdivision with my truck, shifting through the gears all the way to 5th, made me realize how much I loved it. The roar of the big tires, I loved it.but then I got out and was reminded of how small it actually was. I really want the chevy S-10, but it cost twice as much as my toyota does. 5000. I bought my toyota for 2500. I figure I find a buyer for 2500-3000 and use that money to put a down-payment on it, then get a Co-signer to get a loan or ask my parents to loan some money and pay them with me haveing a job. Tell em what you think! -Mr.Nascar-

Date: 6/19/2006 7:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 49689    I had an '87 and it almost hit 400,000 miles before it croaked..I would stick with the Toyota..jmo
Date: 6/19/2006 7:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    if you want to "upgrade" go for it, trucks usually hold a decent value do check into i nsurance costs you can always do a bank loan it's a great way to start getting credit(wonderful to have!) also consider a larger truck will cost more in gas
Date: 6/19/2006 7:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 47296    Why not just buy a regular pick-up. The problem with putting so much into a truck is finding someone to buy it when you get tired of it. Plus, I have always considered my truck more as a tool of my trade, and not a toy. I am on my fifth truck in 30 years, all full size trucks with minimal modifications except for power or towing, and have put over 1,300,000 total miles on them.
Date: 6/19/2006 8:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 63194    a true truck, IMHO, doesnt need a lift. If you need to lift your truck to get places, then you shouldnt be going those places in a truck. again, IMO. I would not get the chevy s-10. From personal experience and having several family members who also purchased the same vehicle, I can honestly say that they are a horror to own. First of all, the zr2 does not get good mileage, and if you do get it, expect to the tranmission to need servicing around 120k (happened with mine, and with a relative at approx the same mileage) - the transfer case almost always craps out and YOU WILL be replacing front wheel bearings very often. Very poor build.
Date: 6/19/2006 8:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 63194    ... that said, run your toyota until it is dead. Or.... Buy a newer toyota... or a nissan... OR I personally am fond of the new Dodge pickups. I agree with TS. Why not get a regular truck?
Date: 6/19/2006 10:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 52155    can't beat the dependbility of a Toyota. maybe get something biggger, but nicer looking and roomier, and keep both? one for normal use, and the toyota for off roading?
Date: 6/20/2006 6:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    Unless you need a big truck stay with something smaller. But know that little trucks like the Toyota are good for driving around in but are next to worthless if you need to tow something or haul much of a load.
Date: 6/21/2006 12:09:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62163    well ya'll the day after I posted this post, I found out that that the day I posted this the clutch locked up. So thanks for the advice on the transmission. I personally think they didn't keep a check on the trans. fluid. But in reality that has little to do with it. The S-10 has 181700 miles on it, a lot, gettin' close to my toyota.( 199000 miles) Which by the way I took today to the muffler shop to get flowmaster 2-1/4 inch pipes from the catalytic coverter. But I may keep this truck for while I'm young, high mpg, and working a part-time job. Meanwhile I'm going to go to the junkyard and get some old junker that needs work and restore it, build it the way I want it. Life-time memory right there.
Date: 6/21/2006 2:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 63194    uhyuh.
Date: 6/21/2006 2:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 63194    Honestly about the tranny in the S-10.... those things stink.
Date: 6/21/2006 11:39:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62163    Actually I beleive the newer dodge pick-ups, such as the power wagon are gas guzzlers. But the newer chevy pick-ups are getting the higher gas mileage. Heres the thing, dodges suck gas and and have low crash testing results, fords cruise controls screw up, chevy can't make a tranny that would last a go cart, and toyotas and nissans are screwed if you roll them. Anyone I'm forgetting? Honda has no style. And international can't build a truck for the average joe ( prices jacked up). But they are nice trucks! Thats why I'm gonig to find some old junker, and take it apart from top down and rebuild it ground up. Build it perfect. Something I'd love to do. Now all the trucks manufactures above I mentioned I ahve nothing against. Thats just what they're knowen for. However I do like Ford Rangers.
Date: 6/22/2006 3:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 47296    The newer Dodge trucks are not that great on gas. I get about 16 MPG with mine on the highway, running the 360 Magnum. However, the truck has outstanding pulling capability, which is essential for me. I am actually looking at a newer 3500 Dodge right now, with the diesel engine. While fuel is a bit more, the people I have talked to that are running the diesel are reporting at least 20 MPG, and even greater towing capability than my 360.
Date: 6/22/2006 9:14:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62163    Dude with my toyota I'm getting 30 MPG! Of course I have no where near the pulling power you have of course. But I watched my buddies toyota, exactly like mine, but with a brand new tranny and mudboggers, he pulled out a puller ( for hauling single wides and stuff around with) and the single wide out of the mud. I was amazed. It won't deep mud but it was enough that that the puller couldn't get traction. I was amzed. I've used mine to pull out a tractor with mud up to the axle.
Date: 6/22/2006 3:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 63194    Then again.. I think it is pointless and childish to take them offroading in a place where you need to worry about rolling. One should only have a truck if they need it for uses such as cargo and hauling. Otherwise, its pointless.
Date: 6/22/2006 3:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 63194    I think nissans are great!
Date: 6/22/2006 4:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 47296    The type of pulling I am talking about is towing a loaded trailer up to 500 miles or more, sometimes over failry even land, and sometimes in the hills and mountains. My engine is "chipped", giving me just under 300 HP. I recently had the trannsmission rebuilt, and the torque converter changed to give me better pulling torque. I lost about 1/2 MPG, but that is negligible. Also, I only pay for a portion of my fuel, mainly what I use for personal use. All the rest, which is about 85% of my fuel cost, is paid by the company I work for.
Date: 6/22/2006 7:57:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62163    Well yeah theres no way my truck would pull huge trailers for long distances. My clutch would go out after the 3rd stoplight. I got the truck back from the muffler shop and it sounds AWESOME! OMG. I had no idea a 4 cylinder could sound this good.
