I wasn't sure where to post this, but I was wondering if anyone had ever volunteered in their local area to help with a homeless count where you go out late at night chapperoned by local police to get a head count of the homeless and inform them of available shelters and give them things like free bus passes and food stamps. I've never done this before but I am volunteering my time tonight to help with this in my area through my college. I never knew something like this existed. But apparently in my area about twice a year the job center does this so that local shelters get state funding that they need. I'm sure it will be an experience that I won't forget. I'll update this tomorrow and let everyone know how it went. :) Has anyone ever done this and what was their experience like?
Even though it was so cold out we still went to as many bridges and along the railreoads as we could. I guess it was a good thing that we didn't find that many homeless or their shelters. The few shelters we found were fairly scrappy: a fire pit, old clothes, old shoes, blankets, empty food containers, but man they sure can get ahold of the alcohol... I guess during the winter, many of the homeless have 'payees' around here who put them up in an inn for the winter and then they're on their own for the summer. A viscous cycle if you ask me. The few that we did find still out in the cold didn't want any help or directions to the nearby shelter. It was definatley an experience that will remind me that no matter how hard my life gets I still have something to be thankful for-- a roof over my head, which is better than a storage garage or bridge overpass any day...
