Late night noises from the closet...

Alright, I was inspired by the lovely Zelana's post to put up some of my own experiences with bizarre noises.

First a little background: My college is one of the few in VT that does not have a reported history of hauntings. You would think that being over 200 years old with a cemetery located on campus there would be something right? Alas, nothing interesting here... or so I thought.

I personally don't think my dorm is haunted mostly because of the fact that it was built less than 7 years ago (I believe) and to my knowledge, nothing mysterious has ever happened here.

Except for in my closet.

At first I thought it was just mice - they have a tendency to congregate indoors when it gets colder. So when I heard some bags rustling around in the closet I just thought it was a few critters that had made their way into my room and I made sure to put all my food up out of their reach.

This happened off an on for a few weeks. Then the noises began to change.

As a nocturnal creature, I hear all sorts of sounds and what not at night, especially on the weekend. I'm very used to hearing bangs and thuds and even having my door being pulled back and forth when locked (due to the fan I keep going and the draft it pulls under the door). What I began hearing was nothing like these noises however, for one reason: the bang I heard was very distinct, very different than those from the ones I'd hear on the floor above me or my walls and it seemed to be coming from the closet.

My first thought was "oh great, something fell off my top shelf and hit the door". This is irritating only in the sense that I am short and have trouble reaching the top shelf in the closet. Not wanting to deal with it that late at night I left it to the morning. Imagine my surprise when I opened the door to find nothing out of place.

This happened again off and on as well as the hangers rustling about. At first I naturally thought some of my clothes had fallen off them, but sure enough when I looked in the morning, nothing had fallen.

Now I'm pretty used to it - it happens off and on, and it's been pretty quiet for the time being.

Not too exciting I know, but it makes me wonder...

Funny fact: Because of the noises I like to tell my friends I have mice in my closet... ginormous six foot ones that like to bang around and play with the hangers :p

Any ideas as to what this could be? My best friend had the same room last year and never mentioned anything weird ever happening. I've heard it's possible for spirits etc. to follow you or for you to attract them unknowingly. I've never felt anything out of place or anything, just heard the noises, so I'm kind of leaning toward there's a logical explanation somewhere...

Didn't really. I used to sleep with my closet door open a lot but since the noises began, I make sure to keep it closed :p
