I'm on dial-up too and I didn't know it when I bought the modem that it has a feature that ties in with my caller id and call waiting, and modem on hold if my isp supported it.. That when somebody calls it pops up on the screen who it is and I have the option to accept or decline it...I almost always decline it.... |

man these people overreacted! I could see if it were a life or death situation, but it wasn't close to that. And like youo said it is your phone youo pay the bill so it is your choice what you want to do with your phone. |

I cancelled my call waiting and caller ID to save some money. My new caller ID: talk to my machine and if I want to talk to you, I'll pick it up My computer used to let me know when someone was calling when I had all those fancy features. Now I guess I need to develop telepathy |

I only loved dial-up for that reason..But it does kind of suck having that noise in your ear when you call someone..lol |

Wish I had that option... I'm in a "rural" area that is still only serviced by Verizon. It's not a big enough market for anyone to bother with yet. |

But if you cut the phone line and the internet, think of all the money you would save lol... I have a prepaid cell, no home phone, and cable internet/but not cable tv. It's a lot more than dial up @ $45 per month, but worth it. |

I've figured it all out... it won't save me a dime. My phone line is around $65 a month (can't find anything cheaper at this time in this area), my cable is $10 (which I have to have to have any kind of reception at all, even local stations) The best other deal I can find would run around $120 a month for everything. Right now I'm paying about $90 and I defintely can't afford more expense right now. |

I don't know about your relatives but I can tell you that the "emergency" numbers at schools are often used when the parent can't be contacted. Remembering that teachers have to ummm teach and can't get to the phone as often as they would like if there is something they need to discuss thats day then they will need to do it then. Other than that I tell everybody to call my mobile phone if they get a busy signal on my home line because more often than not it is because I am on the net. |

I understand what you're saying Kurt, but it wasn't something that couldn't have been handled with sending a note home (or to the provided e-mail address)... like they did before everyone was wired for contact at all times. I wouldn't have even had an issue with her calling my mother-in-law, *IF* she had simply asked her to pass along a message to me. She didn't. She proceeded to discuss the problem with her and how it should be solved. I consider that to be a breach of confidentiality. I have also been assured by my attorney that it was a HUGE privacy violation that I could legally persue. |

We had dial-up here for the first year I lived here. But we had two lines, one for the computer and one for the regular calls. My b/f finally decided he could take the speeds no longer and splurged on satellite internet (we live in the boonies cable and dsl are not an option). I'd hate to go back to dial-up. Good luck getting people to understand that you need alone time too! |

Verizon does offer a dsl service for $14.95 a month. You should type in your phone number at http://www22.verizon.com/ and see if they have DSL in your area eh. |

I understand the rant Merc and have been there and jumped on because of the same complaint. Yet, those people don't pay our phone bill do they? I don't understand about the teacher but the lack of patience seems to be growing. Good post. |

By the way. some people learned to knock a person off line by continually letting the phone ring even thought it was busy and keep caling over and over. That was annoying because you would be right in the middle and have to restart your pc and lose what you had typed. Grrr. I pay $15.00 approx. a month for DSL and that was what I was paying for dial up with my old company. |
