Irritated by my busy signal? Get over it! (a slight rant from mercury!)

I still have dial up service for my internet and I enjoy spending some time on line. I don't go overboard and no one gets neglected because of my habit, but I've had some serious complaints recently.... and not one of them is originating from within my household.

They come from everyone who feels a deep need to reach me instantaniously and I'm not instantly available to them.

Yesterday, my husband's uncle showed up at the house, ready to knock my door down and running his mouth about getting a busy signal when he tried to call. I told him that I pay for a phone line in MY house for MY convience, not his. It's there if I have an emergency, or if I want to order a pizza, or chat with a friend, or spend some time online. It's not here for me to be a slave to, or for HIS convienece. I never answer it, anyway... that's what machines are for! :o) When he arrived, my connection time was way up there at a whoping 33 minutes!

Then he started in about "the crack phone" (that's what he calls cell phones... such class he has) "Why didn't you answer that?" To which I replied: "I don't know... it's not mine, and I didn't hear it ring... it's probably out in the van with a dead battery."

Last week it was my mother complaining. She tried calling twice, within 15 minutes, and freaked, simply because she couldn't reach me. This coming from a woman who spends HOURS and HOURS talking on the phone, and is also no stranger to parking online for hours on end... and just finally got call waiting last year!

Last school year, my daughter's teacher tried calling the house a couple times and when she got the busy signal, immediately called one of our emergency numbers (my mother-in-law) to discuss some assignments my daughter hadn't turned it. I didn't think that was quite what emergency numbers were provided for, but, whatever...

Is it possible for anyone to be allowed to be "out of touch" or "unreachable" these days?

Is it a lack of patience? A huge need for instant gratification? Or what?

Date: 11/15/2005 2:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 49689    I'm on dial-up too and I didn't know it when I bought the modem that it has a feature that ties in with my caller id and call waiting, and modem on hold if my isp supported it.. That when somebody calls it pops up on the screen who it is and I have the option to accept or decline it...I almost always decline it....
Date: 11/15/2005 2:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 14464    man these people overreacted! I could see if it were a life or death situation, but it wasn't close to that. And like youo said it is your phone youo pay the bill so it is your choice what you want to do with your phone.
Date: 11/15/2005 2:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 61897    lol@ your post and responses to your brother in law-lol......
Date: 11/15/2005 2:54:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    I cancelled my call waiting and caller ID to save some money. My new caller ID: talk to my machine and if I want to talk to you, I'll pick it up My computer used to let me know when someone was calling when I had all those fancy features. Now I guess I need to develop telepathy
Date: 11/15/2005 2:55:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    I shut him right down, Chi! He was ready to start really ranting, but I guess he didn't want to pay my bill for me
Date: 11/15/2005 2:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    I only loved dial-up for that reason..But it does kind of suck having that noise in your ear when you call someone..lol
Date: 11/15/2005 3:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 49689    I tried that too..and then found a phone company that offers me everything for about 38.00 a month..
Date: 11/15/2005 3:31:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    Wish I had that option... I'm in a "rural" area that is still only serviced by Verizon. It's not a big enough market for anyone to bother with yet.
Date: 11/15/2005 3:32:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    oh and Chi... brother in law knows better than to call or show up here! Uncle is still figuring it out ;o)
Date: 11/15/2005 3:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 28848    Gee..I dunno. I'm still trying to get over the fact that you're still on dial up, I'd pull my hair out.
Date: 11/15/2005 3:39:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    It is frustrating at times, but I'm too cheap to spend more than 14.95 a month ;o)
Date: 11/15/2005 3:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 28848    But if you cut the phone line and the internet, think of all the money you would save lol... I have a prepaid cell, no home phone, and cable internet/but not cable tv. It's a lot more than dial up @ $45 per month, but worth it.
Date: 11/15/2005 3:48:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    I've figured it all out... it won't save me a dime. My phone line is around $65 a month (can't find anything cheaper at this time in this area), my cable is $10 (which I have to have to have any kind of reception at all, even local stations) The best other deal I can find would run around $120 a month for everything. Right now I'm paying about $90 and I defintely can't afford more expense right now.
Date: 11/15/2005 3:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 28848    yikes! sorry to hear that Merc. Dial up, it is then...
Date: 11/15/2005 3:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    for now, anyway... Maybe someday things will be a little more predictable for us and I can splurge!
Date: 11/15/2005 4:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 42703    Yeah I used to hear stuff like that too whenever I still lived with my parents, now my wife and I have call waiting. So people think your just not home! It's great no more complaints. I really understand where your coming from though, been there, done that.
Date: 11/15/2005 4:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    I don't know about your relatives but I can tell you that the "emergency" numbers at schools are often used when the parent can't be contacted. Remembering that teachers have to ummm teach and can't get to the phone as often as they would like if there is something they need to discuss thats day then they will need to do it then. Other than that I tell everybody to call my mobile phone if they get a busy signal on my home line because more often than not it is because I am on the net.
Date: 11/15/2005 4:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    When we had call waiting, it was just as big of an issue: "Why isn't your machine picking up??" ARRGH!
Date: 11/15/2005 4:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 4144    i think you are my twin! were we seperated at birth or what?!! i've been saying the same thing for years. i pay for MY phone in MY house. as far as i'm concerned that goes for friends, relatives and telemarketers!!
Date: 11/15/2005 4:30:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    I understand what you're saying Kurt, but it wasn't something that couldn't have been handled with sending a note home (or to the provided e-mail address)... like they did before everyone was wired for contact at all times. I wouldn't have even had an issue with her calling my mother-in-law, *IF* she had simply asked her to pass along a message to me. She didn't. She proceeded to discuss the problem with her and how it should be solved. I consider that to be a breach of confidentiality. I have also been assured by my attorney that it was a HUGE privacy violation that I could legally persue.
Date: 11/15/2005 5:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 63172    Oh I hated that when I had dialup. When you say that you were online people react with an oh thats not important.
Date: 11/15/2005 5:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 23207    We had dial-up here for the first year I lived here. But we had two lines, one for the computer and one for the regular calls. My b/f finally decided he could take the speeds no longer and splurged on satellite internet (we live in the boonies cable and dsl are not an option). I'd hate to go back to dial-up. Good luck getting people to understand that you need alone time too!
Date: 11/15/2005 6:02:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    not important?!? I'd be insane without this "not important" part of my life! Then what would they do if they had to get a hold of me? Wait til Sunday and leave all sharp objects outside the pillowed room ;o)
Date: 11/15/2005 8:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 4309    Verizon does offer a dsl service for $14.95 a month. You should type in your phone number at http://www22.verizon.com/ and see if they have DSL in your area eh.
Date: 11/16/2005 1:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 40530    When I was about 11 and first started on USM we had dial up, and my mother's workmate always used to phone up my mother on her mobile phone because I was online. It's annoying I know *hug*
Date: 11/16/2005 3:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 33925    I have dial up as well Merc..Here though I have two phone lines. One for the computer and then the main line. This way both are taken care of.
Date: 11/16/2005 8:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 61897    Oh yeah, I misread that, still funny
Date: 11/16/2005 10:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 31765    Amen. We get the same thing at times. "Your phone is always busy!" I've been so tempted to say to certain people "That's because I don't want to talk to you."
Date: 11/30/2005 12:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    I understand the rant Merc and have been there and jumped on because of the same complaint. Yet, those people don't pay our phone bill do they? I don't understand about the teacher but the lack of patience seems to be growing. Good post.
Date: 11/30/2005 12:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    By the way. some people learned to knock a person off line by continually letting the phone ring even thought it was busy and keep caling over and over. That was annoying because you would be right in the middle and have to restart your pc and lose what you had typed. Grrr. I pay $15.00 approx. a month for DSL and that was what I was paying for dial up with my old company.
