I haven't wrote about this yet because I have been debating weather or not to talk about it at all. But I decided that it’s not a bad thing to want to get this off my chest. First off a little background. I work for a vacation retail company more specifically I work at a condo as the housekeeping supervisor. Well last weekend we were still experiencing very ruff surf due to the hurricane that was in the gulf hitting LA and TX. Well a man in his late 40's early 50's was vacationing with his finance and family at our condo. One minute he was standing with them on the beach in very shallow water and the next he was being swept out to sea.
I was in an elevator on my way to clean tile in a unit (I do this on the side for extra money) and there was a family who asked me if the beaches were open. I told them that the surf was way to strong and not to even try, there son (16 or so) said "well when they tell us to leave we won't be able to hear them from all the fun we will be having". I shrugged it off and went up to the unit I was supposed to be cleaning. After about 45 min I heard what sounded like a helicopter outside on the ocean side. I went to the balcony to see what was going on. Well having lived in this area its not the first time I've seen rescue helicopters looking for someone in the gulf. But as I was scanning the crushing waves looking for the person in distress I all I could find was a black and skin colored lump floating at water level. I then noticed my boss was on the beach so I quickly took an elevator down. When I arrived there I asked him how long the person had been in the water. He informed me it had been over 25 min. I intently knew the unfortiounte outcome and what I saw was indeed a body. After about 30 more min the rescuers were finally able to get to the body and bring him. The fence started to run towards the rescuers and her dead love. My boss and I rushed and grabbed her before she got there just as they were placing a blanket over the body. We started ushering her back to the condo so the cops could take a statement. As I was holding open the door the same young boy from the elevator was walking down the sidewalk. In what seemed like slow motion he watched the widow go threw the door and then our eyes met. He quickly averted his eyes and hung his head. The next few hours we spent consoling the widow and trying to make her comfortable.
Life is strange one minute your on vacation with your family, which we later found out they were there because his daughter was supposed to get married on the beach that day, and the next your fighting for you life against mother nature yourself. Or maybe you’re just driving home thinking about your day at work when something goes horribly wrong. My reason for writing this is not to be depressing but to remind everyone that yes we may have problems and life may seem hard, but always remember to take the time to enjoy what you have, before it’s all gone. Live without regret and try to laugh everyday and sleep well knowing you will always be remembered by those who you've touched.
