adventure or insanity? mercury

Last week, this was all talk. Something I never thought would happen. This week, I'm not so sure.... looks like it might.

Over the last few years we've been contacted several times from various commercial real estate brokers regarding interest in purchasing our land and home. It's not much... 1/3 of an acre and an old, old house.

The attraction is our location- highway frontage on the main drag through town, within city limits, in an area that is soon to boom commercially... and a corner lot. We had exactly this thought in mind when we bought the place 8 years ago and considered it as an investment and not "our dream home". I've since changed my attitude about our house. Now it's HOME.

Earlier this spring, another broker contacted us. They wanted us to toss out the first figure, and I dragged my feet. Told him he was more than welcome to make us an offer, but that he wouldn't like the price I would toss at him.... I never tossed anything. He's also inquired with the next door neighbor and the homeowner of the house next to that. The owner of the house 2 doors down gave him a figure that would have been in the neighborhood of mine, and he never heard back from the guy. Now, the neighbor's younger brother is interested in setting up a deal with us. We'll be able to walk away with $100K, if things go as planned. He just needs to check into his financing options. And has told us that we can stay, as renters, for as long as we need to.

Since then, my husband has a bug up his butt to move to Hawaii. He's got it all figured out... he says. I've never been there and wonder if I'll be able to stand it. Sure, it sounds like paradise... He's been there twice, and both were extended stays of 6 months or more, so he's more sure of what he's walking into.

I'm scared to death.

Scared of so many things, but mostly:

* I'll never see my friends or family again (not that they knock my door down visiting me....) I don't even know why this scares me. I'd like to get away from most of my family, and my 2 best friends already live out of state, so I don't get to see them regularly, anyway.

*I've heard the schools are crap. I have a child with special education needs and live in one of the top districts in the nation. We'll have to put the kids into private school... that could get expensive.... too expensive.

And this one's pretty stupid, but a consideration, none-the-less: This will be my last experience of a Northern Autumn. There's something about Fall that makes me come alive, and I won't have that anymore. I'll miss the pine trees and their almost intoxicating scent. I'll miss flaming leaves of orange and red on the maples in early October. I can't imagine everything being green year round.

The upside of this plan:

My husband lost his job in mid-July due to huge automaker layoffs. Chances are not good for him being called back, since they have another big layoff coming up in October. Anyone with lesss than 12 years senority can pretty much kiss their jobs good-bye... permanently. And alternative job opportunities are just not in abundance here. Hubby's also in construction, and it's booming in Hawaii. Plus, job competition is not big, as many locals take government subsidies rather than work.

The cost of heating our home this winter will be prohibitive enough that we may end up actually losing the house. I just paid off LAST year's bill this week.... just in time for us to start the furnace. Unemployment is barely carrying us through right now, it won't handle winter.

Hubby has a support system already there. His dad has lived in Hawaii for over 30 years. Culturally, we should be accepted. Me and my lily white skin might have issues with the sun, but my husband and children will blend with the locals :o)

The idea of being homeless in Hawaii is much more appealing than being homless through a Michigan winter.

We've been wanting to get to a more "earth friendly" way of living. Hawaii supports that with availability and usefulness of solar power and other stuff.

HELP! I'm like a deer in the headlights right now. I don't know what's best and I don't want to just "go along" like I have in every other thing in my life. I want my life to be MY choice... but I can't decide.

Is it an adenture or we just plain insane?

Sorry this is so long... and if you've made it this far- THANK YOU! :o)

Date: 9/11/2005 8:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 11341    Wow Merc, I dont know what to say. I had issues with moving across the country and look what you might do. All I can say is I wish you the best in whatever choice you make. I dont think it would be unreasonable that you agree to go (adventure) but make SURE that you have the ability to come back (without that its just insanity:P) This could be the greatest thing for you family! *HUGE hugs*
Date: 9/11/2005 9:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 28848    I wish someone would move me to Hawaii. I say go for it! I have thought many times what it would be like to move there. I don't know much about the schools, but it might not be as bad as what you have heard. After losing everything we had over a year ago, I had to take my children out of private school and put them into the public school system. At first I was absolutely horrified at the very thought, but both of my children are doing very well, and I even like the school that they go to.
Date: 9/11/2005 9:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 33925    I know what I would be doing..I would take this on as an adventure. I wouldnt burn any bridges here, but I would definately give it a fair shot..Like maybe set a time frame of six months for permanency. I would not want to close any doors.
Date: 9/11/2005 9:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 21435    Hiya, Mercury I've been to Oahu a couple of times and it is nice. Island paradise and such, but homeless is homeless, whether it's Hawaii or Michigan. Only upside is you aren't likely to freeze to death..hehe..Of course, with his father living there, I guess you all are pretty much guaranteed a place to stay??? I heard that land sells by the square foot over there, so I'd want to find out what I could get for my hundred grand in the way of property/accomadations/rentals. Last time I was there (in '84) things were actually pretty cheap in the interior of that island, as far as food. One thing to consider is that the Hawaiian islands are just that, islands, and anything not made or grown there can get expensive as it has to be imported. I've no doubt that it would be an adventure for the family. Heck! I'd like to do it. Best of luck to you, whatever you decide. Write on...and aloha.
Date: 9/11/2005 9:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 8274    What island are you considering? I know to buy a house on Kauai you better have lots of money. I also know that there are a lot of jobs there! My sister has lived on Kauai for over 30 years. Her daughter is a teacher over there. I was there this March, and seriously considering moving there too, so I asked my niece about the schools there and she said, very small, but a good curriculum and the a great program. Thats all i know. Good luck with your decision. I would probably jump at the chance, but then i'm gypsy, i swear! lol Peace and Love...
Date: 9/11/2005 9:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 62901    Wow. That is certainly going to be a major and complicated decision. But after everything you've explained, it does sound like that the best idea. If he'll be able to get work there, and your living costs will be down then why not? I know you'll miss it here, as anyone does when they leave their home. But you might grown to really like it. And it least you'll still be with your husband and children. You won't be alone. Any maybe there can be times where your friends or family can plan a trip down there to see you. Everyone wants to go there one day, now they really have an excuse! ;-) Sorry I could not be more helpful but I hope you can make the best decision for you and your family. *hugs*
Date: 9/11/2005 2:03:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    Thanks everyone... My stomach flips when I think about the adventure... but it also flips when I think of our prospects here. Step-mom is coming back from Hilo this week with some real estate magazines for us. Land isn't as expensive as everyone thinks it is, as long as you aren't in the tourist areas. We'd be on the big island (Hawaii) near Hilo. His dad bought 2 houses on 3 acres for $80K about 5 years ago. He also tells us that work is plentiful for those willing to do it. He also has an uncle who lives on Maui and one of my former aunts just moved there, too. I'm getting used to the idea... I guess mostly, I don't want to rush it, and my husband would like to be gone before the first snow flake hits the ground.
Date: 9/11/2005 3:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 60685    All I can offer is mainly regarding selling your property, have a professional do an estimate of the value, seeing so many people have interest in it I'm thinking it's worth way more than 100k so try and thread lightly.
Date: 9/11/2005 4:05:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    Not 100K total sale price.... We'd have 100K left after settling what we currently owe on it. We'll have more than tripled our investment in 8 years. We will go through the proper channels before we do anything though
Date: 9/11/2005 4:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 62085    hmm move to Hawaii ...or stay for a cold Michigan winter.. You and your family come first, do what is best for them.,, and Wikki Wikki (Hawaiian for hurry) before yall change your mind. Go for it !!!
BTW what's the vaccine laws there? Hey maybe you will see DOG, the bounty hunter..lol

Date: 9/11/2005 5:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    I know.. it sounds like this decision should be a piece of cake! Vaccines are current (blah!) I learned of my dangers far too late
Date: 9/12/2005 7:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 4548    i can't convey how incredibly important it is to see what other places have to offer. i picked up and moved 750 miles away in less than two weeks. it was traumatic, but then everything just fell into place. merc, it will happen for you. you can't stay where you're at! lol, i wish i could yell it at you. take this wonderful opportunity being given to you. you're strong, smart and capable. you will be happy!
Date: 9/12/2005 8:45:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    no need to yell, Jez! I hear you loud and clear. I've been craving a big change. I know it's the kick my rear end needs. It's just scary to think about.
Date: 9/15/2005 1:04:00 AM  ( Admin )   On the other hand .. 100k is not all that much and I wouldn't want to be stranded on an island without a job. At least the continental US has other places to go for work.
Date: 9/15/2005 4:27:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10245    How about being stranded on a mitten without one? I know it's not a great deal of money, but we're used to not having any I think that would give us a "buffer" to get our life established. We're just about starting from square one whether we stay here or move somewhere else... in fact if we stay, we're starting from somewhere behind square one. I'd hate to miss our opportunity to profit on this place and end up losing it. Or waiting out the market and find that the property devalued while we held out being greedy, or lose it to the bank during the wait... As for work: construction happens everywhere and he's got a great portfolio. I'm really not worried at all about him finding work. It's all the other changes that have me worried.
