Wow Merc, I dont know what to say. I had issues with moving across the country and look what you might do. All I can say is I wish you the best in whatever choice you make. I dont think it would be unreasonable that you agree to go (adventure) but make SURE that you have the ability to come back (without that its just insanity:P) This could be the greatest thing for you family! *HUGE hugs* |

I wish someone would move me to Hawaii. I say go for it! I have thought many times what it would be like to move there. I don't know much about the schools, but it might not be as bad as what you have heard. After losing everything we had over a year ago, I had to take my children out of private school and put them into the public school system. At first I was absolutely horrified at the very thought, but both of my children are doing very well, and I even like the school that they go to. |

I know what I would be doing..I would take this on as an adventure. I wouldnt burn any bridges here, but I would definately give it a fair shot..Like maybe set a time frame of six months for permanency. I would not want to close any doors. |

Hiya, Mercury I've been to Oahu a couple of times and it is nice. Island paradise and such, but homeless is homeless, whether it's Hawaii or Michigan. Only upside is you aren't likely to freeze to death..hehe..Of course, with his father living there, I guess you all are pretty much guaranteed a place to stay??? I heard that land sells by the square foot over there, so I'd want to find out what I could get for my hundred grand in the way of property/accomadations/rentals. Last time I was there (in '84) things were actually pretty cheap in the interior of that island, as far as food. One thing to consider is that the Hawaiian islands are just that, islands, and anything not made or grown there can get expensive as it has to be imported. I've no doubt that it would be an adventure for the family. Heck! I'd like to do it. Best of luck to you, whatever you decide. Write on...and aloha. |

What island are you considering? I know to buy a house on Kauai you better have lots of money. I also know that there are a lot of jobs there! My sister has lived on Kauai for over 30 years. Her daughter is a teacher over there. I was there this March, and seriously considering moving there too, so I asked my niece about the schools there and she said, very small, but a good curriculum and the a great program. Thats all i know. Good luck with your decision. I would probably jump at the chance, but then i'm gypsy, i swear! lol Peace and Love... |

Wow. That is certainly going to be a major and complicated decision. But after everything you've explained, it does sound like that the best idea. If he'll be able to get work there, and your living costs will be down then why not? I know you'll miss it here, as anyone does when they leave their home. But you might grown to really like it. And it least you'll still be with your husband and children. You won't be alone. Any maybe there can be times where your friends or family can plan a trip down there to see you. Everyone wants to go there one day, now they really have an excuse! ;-) Sorry I could not be more helpful but I hope you can make the best decision for you and your family. *hugs* |

Thanks everyone... My stomach flips when I think about the adventure... but it also flips when I think of our prospects here. Step-mom is coming back from Hilo this week with some real estate magazines for us. Land isn't as expensive as everyone thinks it is, as long as you aren't in the tourist areas. We'd be on the big island (Hawaii) near Hilo. His dad bought 2 houses on 3 acres for $80K about 5 years ago. He also tells us that work is plentiful for those willing to do it. He also has an uncle who lives on Maui and one of my former aunts just moved there, too. I'm getting used to the idea... I guess mostly, I don't want to rush it, and my husband would like to be gone before the first snow flake hits the ground. |

All I can offer is mainly regarding selling your property, have a professional do an estimate of the value, seeing so many people have interest in it I'm thinking it's worth way more than 100k so try and thread lightly. |

Not 100K total sale price.... We'd have 100K left after settling what we currently owe on it. We'll have more than tripled our investment in 8 years. We will go through the proper channels before we do anything though |

no need to yell, Jez! I hear you loud and clear. I've been craving a big change. I know it's the kick my rear end needs. It's just scary to think about. |

On the other hand .. 100k is not all that much and I wouldn't want to be stranded on an island without a job. At least the continental US has other places to go for work. |

How about being stranded on a mitten without one? I know it's not a great deal of money, but we're used to not having any I think that would give us a "buffer" to get our life established. We're just about starting from square one whether we stay here or move somewhere else... in fact if we stay, we're starting from somewhere behind square one. I'd hate to miss our opportunity to profit on this place and end up losing it. Or waiting out the market and find that the property devalued while we held out being greedy, or lose it to the bank during the wait... As for work: construction happens everywhere and he's got a great portfolio. I'm really not worried at all about him finding work. It's all the other changes that have me worried. |
