"Shelley - Short & Sweet"

Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822)
In his day he was revered. Now-a-days he is best known for being the husband of the author who's novel has been made into countless movies & who's featured character has appeared in a myriad of T.V. series..."Frankenstein".
But it was Mr. Shelley that was the real literary talent in the family.
Here are three examples:

"A Lament"

O world! O life! O time!
On whose last steps I climb,
Trembling at that where I had stood before;
When will return the glory of your prime?
No more--Oh, never more!

Out of the day and night
A joy has taken flight;
Fresh spring, and summer, and winter hoar,
Move my faint heart with grief, but with delight
No more--Oh, never more!

"A Dirge"

Rough wind, that moanest loud
Grief too sad for song;
Wild wind, when sullen cloud
Knells all the night long;
Sad storm, whose tears are vain,
Bare woods, whose branches strain,
Deep caves and dreary main,--
Wail, for the world's wrong!

"Music, When Soft Voices Die"

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory--
Odors, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

This post is dedicated to enlightening one of our generous hosts & my patron saint of mine own lack-lustre art...GINGER. Ma'am you complained of not being familiar with the late greats of this rhythmic art form...complain no more!

Date: 9/11/2005 11:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 998    I am laughing here BIGO, and I'm sure I will have to be more selective with telling you where my ignorant pockets lie ... LOL. Heaven forbid that I tell you that I don't like politics .. you will have me listening to CNN, 24/7 ... ha ha ha. As I read through these great poems by Shelley, I thought I really liked the one called "A Lament". The the fury and power in "A Dirge" really caught my attention so I thought that would be my favorite. However, my favorite beyond compare is "Music, When Soft Voices Die". This one is such a tribute to love and even loss. Thank you my friend for bringing me into the past to read these treasures, and thus into the future of poetry.
Date: 9/12/2005 5:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 62100    These are beautiful pieces of Shelley's work...I had forgotten that he was the husband of "Frankenstein" author....
Date: 9/12/2005 6:34:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 18111    On behalf of the author's memory...I humbly thank ya'll. My dedication aside, the reason you (Amers) may still read some of his stuff in English class is because his stuff is still worthy nearly 200 years later. I was surprised, if not shocked, this morning to find this post at the top of the site. I'm eternally grateful. I haven't been at the top in years...& look I did it standing on the broad literary shoulders of man who's name sounds makes him seem so slender & narrow. Thank you Ginger-"Politics & Political Parties Analysis 101" begins next week Tuesday. Don't be late.

Date: 9/26/2005 3:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 11616    thy words of humble meanings lie, become of worth when the author may die but for the posts of one great man, where others try however no writer can. compare to one that i know best shall be read before layed to rest. each day we wait for the voice of you, and words from your heart and soul too. :ugs::
