Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) In his day he was revered. Now-a-days he is best known for being the husband of the author who's novel has been made into countless movies & who's featured character has appeared in a myriad of T.V. series..."Frankenstein". But it was Mr. Shelley that was the real literary talent in the family. Here are three examples:
"A Lament"
O world! O life! O time! On whose last steps I climb, Trembling at that where I had stood before; When will return the glory of your prime? No more--Oh, never more!
Out of the day and night A joy has taken flight; Fresh spring, and summer, and winter hoar, Move my faint heart with grief, but with delight No more--Oh, never more!
"A Dirge"
Rough wind, that moanest loud Grief too sad for song; Wild wind, when sullen cloud Knells all the night long; Sad storm, whose tears are vain, Bare woods, whose branches strain, Deep caves and dreary main,-- Wail, for the world's wrong!
"Music, When Soft Voices Die"
Music, when soft voices die, Vibrates in the memory-- Odors, when sweet violets sicken, Live within the sense they quicken.
Rose leaves, when the rose is dead, Are heaped for the beloved's bed; And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone, Love itself shall slumber on.
