(CNN) -- Grammy- and Oscar-winning rapper Eminem is being treated for a dependency on sleeping pills, his publicist announced Thursday.
In a short statement, Lauren Burns said Eminem is "in the hospital under doctors' care. He is being treated for dependency on sleep medication."
On Tuesday, Eminem announced he was canceling his 10-city European tour, which was supposed to start in Hamburg, Germany on September 1 and end in Dublin, Ireland September 17.
In a statement on his Web site, the singer said he was being treated for "exhaustion, complicated by other medical issues."
It did not mention any dependency on sleeping pills and Burns did not elaborate on what treatment the star was receiving, or where he was hospitalized.
The site said the European shows "are not expected to be rescheduled."
The 32-year-old rapper -- whose real name is Marshall Mathers III -- has won nine Grammy awards since 1999.
In addition, he won an Academy Award for best song for "Lose Yourself." The song was featured in the semi-autobiographical 2002 film "8 Mile," in which he starred.
Eminem's critics say his lyrics are violent and offensive to women and homosexuals.
