Anyone have a skin allergy? Please help me!!!

Okay, here's some background information: i have a severe skin allergy to certain types of citric acid. Not all types, but any kind of veggies that are in the onion family will actually burn my skin right off if their juice comes in contact with my skin. Obviously, i can't touch these things, much less eat them.

i've also found that i cannot use certain types of cosmetics, because they contain something silmilar. i have to pretty much stick with the makeup, lotion, and other skin products i use because i know they are safe. Lip colors and glosses are particularly prone to containing things i can't have.

Yesterday morning, my roommate dragged me along on her shopping trip to the cosmetics counter at a department store. Bored and anxious to leave, i picked up a trial of some Clinique lip gloss and dabbed some on my thumb to see the color, and then to get rid of it, wiped it on my lips without thinking. Why i would so this, knowing i have an allergy, i don't know. (Although i've never had a problem with Clinique products in the past.) i've already lectured myself.

An hour or 2 later, the pad of my thumb was swollen and puffy, and the skin eventually bubbled and broke. My lips are a burning mess, even a day later. It's so uncomfortable, i can't sleep. Tonight, my thumb is okay, the 'infection' (if you would call it that) has passed, but my lips are on fire and kind of itching; the top layer of skin had kind of grown back, but they are very swollen.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this, or seen anyone who has, perhaps working in a medical field or something? Any suggestions on how to treat it? This has happened before, every couple years or so, but it always seems to take a couple weeks to heal and i wish i knew something i could put on it to soothe the burning at least for now. Sorry this is long, and thanks in advance!

Date: 7/24/2005 10:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 63142    the only thing i can suggest is aloe vera (it might take a few days though) i sorta get the same thing (minus the bubbling and peeling!) with alot of band aids and sticky plaster. hope your lips feel ok soon! beki lorraine

Date: 7/25/2005 12:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 7899    ummm.... well, most skin allergies are actually caused by a histamine reaction in the skin... try picking up an anti-histamine product at your local wal-mart or target, they usually work.
Date: 7/25/2005 2:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 4887     oh ouch! that sounds aweful! Thankfully i dont have an allergy like that. My aunt does though. She CANNOT wear lipstick.
Date: 7/25/2005 2:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 4887    If she does, she has to get those that come in a little container.
Date: 7/25/2005 4:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 15157    If I were you I`d keep a pack of Benedril in your purse...what you had was a SEVERe reaction like you said you KNEW..*spanks* The burning feeling can be taken away by soaking your digit in some warm ebsan-salts. I hope you get to feeling better
Date: 7/25/2005 7:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    Buy an aloe vera plant, they are easy to grow. When I was younger I had a lot of skin allergies, lucky for me I ourgrew them. My mother kept an aloe vera plant around for me to use, it's all natural unlike some of the over-the-counter stuff. You probably should go see a dermatolgist and get tested to see exactly what you are allergic to.
Date: 7/25/2005 8:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 160    When my grandaughter was born she came from the hospital screaming her little head off. Unfortunatly it took us a while to understand why she was suffering. She too is allergic to everything including her own saliva, so as she drooled her face and cheeks became inflamed and burned. She has a severe form of A-Topic Excema. The only relief that she has is in the form of a prescription cream named Elecon. It is a steroid but within moments she has relief. You also need to beware that when you try cosmetics on at a public place such as a dept. store you run the risk of transfering germs from the last person who used the cosmetic. There was a recent article about this and they concluded that these cosmetics are unclean and harbor bacteria and other nasty germs. Also, be careful of ingredients such as citrus acids in creams and lotions. I once used something that the Dr. recommended that I buy on my grandaughter and becasue it had alpha hydroxie in it she swelled uo and blistered, I nearly had to take her to the ER. Hope this helps. It's not a fun thing to suffer from this.
Date: 7/25/2005 10:30:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63042    Obi, i think i will try that; i already tried the aloe and it seems to relieve it somewhat, temporarily, but maybe a Benedryl cream will help. Thanks!
Date: 7/25/2005 10:39:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63042    Dina, my grandmother was like that as well. i hope i don't develope worse allergies as i get older!
Date: 7/25/2005 10:44:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63042    Kiki i don't know what got into me!!! i wasn't even thinking. As far as the Benedryl, i actually used to have a necklace that had prescription allergy pills in it, with an emergency allergy inscription on it. It was never something i could get in the habit of wearing, though, and i haven't seen it in years. i should go to the doctor and get another one; i've had to go to the hospital several times when my throat closed up after eating something bad. In a situation like that, a pill probably wouldn't help anyways; i have to get injected with a muscle relaxant, but at least people would know what was happening and what to do. The benedryl in my purse would probably be a good start.
Date: 7/25/2005 10:45:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63042    Kelly, we did have an aloe vera plant when i was little-as soon as my roommate moves out in a month or 2, i will get one. Her cat eats any living plants that he comes in contact with!
Date: 7/25/2005 10:49:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63042    Pamy, that poor baby!! i hope she out grows this. i agree with you completely on not using sample cosmetics...i'm usually such a germ freak. That's why i put the stuff on my finger first instead of touching the applicator to my lips, and still knew i shouldn't be doing it.
Date: 7/28/2005 12:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 62408    I had a problem back in high school, whenever I'd make hoagies for my chorus fundraisers. I couldn't handle the tomatoes or onions...my hands would break out in hives, and I'd get so itchy. I've had similiar problems with excessive sunlight, medicines, etc. Since you already know some of your triggers, I would avoid them at all costs, and use products that are hypo-allergenic (Soaps, creams, etc.) Second, keep Benadryl on hand in both pill and cream form (like a hydracortisone). The cream will take care of skin reaction, and not make you sleepy. If this problem is excessive, see your doctor for more advice, perhaps there is something else available for long-term relief.
