Finding out who you are

How exactly are you supposed to find out who you are? I know over time, throughout friendships and different obstacles as you grow up, you will learn more about yourself, or what you want.

But I live in a nice suburban place, and the teenagers are always complaining how much they hate it. I think they just haven't grown up yet, and realized just how lucky they REALLY are. And I try to explain it to my friends whenever they talk about it. (I'm 18 by the way). But some people try to say it's not a good place to learn who you are. If any one watches the new season of the Real World, one of the guys Wes on there even said he grew up in the suburbs, and it wasn't a good place to learn who you are or to find out more about yourself.

Well my question is, how exactly do these people expect to learn who they are? A lot of people who have much harder lives learn out who they are from their experiences and struggles. And I'm really proud of a lot of people who have had to put up with a lot, and come out stronger in the end.

I guess I'm just curious because I don't get how people say living in the suburbs affects your knowledge of yourself. I mean, I DO in a way, but...By the time I turned 18, I may not know myself 100%..but I do know a lot about myself, and what I like, or how I act, or what I Want out of life. And I live here. I'm not completely grown up yet, and I still have some learning and changing to do...but I don't know. I just figured I'd ask you guys because USM talks about pretty much everything, and I like that.

Thanks for your time :)

Date: 7/8/2005 8:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 33573    I don't think it has anything to do with where you live. It is how you carry yourself, how you react to sitautions, how you treat yourself and others, things like that. Yes, I am sure the area has a certain affect ... but just because you live in a certain area, doesn't mean it's going to stop you from finding out who you are. It may change the way you are finding out ... but I think it all depends on the person
Date: 7/8/2005 8:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    Finding out who you are is more like a process than anything...at the core, we already know a large part of it...but life experiences change certain aspects of who we are, how we relate to others, the actions that we take...it's a never ending process. It's okay that you don't know yet..you're only 18..just know your core values and go from there!!

Date: 7/8/2005 8:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10534    Yeah Amanda, I'm glad you agree that the location CAN affect it, but isn't the main thing that does. I guess I just don't know where people are coming from all the way, when they say they can't learn who they are just because they live in my area. I think they just haven't tried.
Date: 7/8/2005 8:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    Hi, Icyfire Every single day, we learn a little something of ourselves. Every now and then we have an earth-shaking experience, but mostly it's a long, slow grind. Good to read you, lady. Write on....
Date: 7/8/2005 8:25:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10534    Thanks Xylanthia It's crazy how people can change so much. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. You can meet some one, and two years later, they'll be a completely different person just because of a life situation. Perhaps it's not always that drastic of a change, but still...We're changing all the time. It's kind of cool actually, to look at yourself and analyze and observe as the process unfolds. Maybe I Think too much. lol
Date: 7/8/2005 8:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 33573    They must think the larger cities have "soooo" much more to offer with all the different types of people and because there is so much more to do. Because there are more clubs to get drunk at and make out ... it helps you to find out who you are in the long run! LOL, poo on that :P I think those people are teh ones who have always wanted out and to move on to bigger things
Date: 7/8/2005 8:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 10534    Kronk! I haven't seen you in a while. Maybe I haven't just came around enough...Hope you've been good. You put what I was trying to say in a good way. It's very true, the way you put it.
Date: 7/8/2005 8:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    Yep..life is one crazy ride sometimes but all we can do is strap in and hang on for the ride...
Date: 7/8/2005 8:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    I think all teenagers complain about where they live. That's my experience anyway. I don't think it makes a difference where you live to find out about yourself. Who you are changes constantly, based on influences from your environment. As you move through the course of life, you just pick up more experiences that shape who you are. I came from a small town, and then moved to the suburbs. Is it fun? No. Have I changed? Yes, but I attribute that to growing up. I'm moving to a big city in the fall, and we'll see how much I've changed. However, the 'burbs will still always be ingrained in me..somewhere. I want pizza!
Date: 7/8/2005 8:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 16069    Knowing who you are and what you want out of life comes from within. It doesnt matter were you live. So, I guess I agree with you =)
