Does anyone of you have a good natural repellent for ticks ? ~Belgian

My cat is a real outdoor animal, but when we are home, she also comes inside the house to be pet by the kids.

As the spring and summer seasons are here again, also the problem of ticks has reoccurred. I had to remove 7 of them this morning which caused me to be late for work !

I know that there are a lot of chemical repellents, but my Winnie has had a bad allergic reaction to one of them (which almost killed her) and now I can't use any of those anymore.

Is there anyone who knows how we can get rid of (or avoid) these horrible little creepers ? (A niece of mine got Lyme's desease caused by a tick's bite and I really don't want this to happen to any of us.)

Thanks a lot for any suggestion !

Date: 5/12/2005 1:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 46527    Put a few drops of Rose Geranium essential oil on your kitty's collar. Ticks hate it! DO NOT allow it to get on the fur where it will get eaten when she washes. Pennyroyal also repels ticks but is a little dangerous to use. Not only is it very bad for anyone pregnant as it can cause miscarriage but it is also toxic to cats. Rose Geranium is safer.

Date: 5/12/2005 1:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 36352    There are thousands of flea and tick products for animals but Advantage is the best I've heard of.
Date: 5/12/2005 1:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    Where would Rose Geranium be found, LSR? That would be good to know>
Date: 5/12/2005 2:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 46527    Advantage can cause horrible reactions in susceptible animals, if your kitty is of an allergic nature then stay well clear of the stuff. You can get Rose Geranium essential oil in health food stores.
Date: 5/12/2005 3:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 11341    7 !? I was totaly creeped out from removing 1 from my dog! I dont have an answer for you but Im going to keep ready to see what others say. Good luck to you and your kitty.
Date: 5/12/2005 4:21:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 7672    LSR, thanks for the tip, but my kitty doesn't wear a collar. I gave up putting one around her neck after she lost the 6th lol. Do you think it might be ok to put it in the back of her neck, that seems to be a hard spot for her to clean.
Date: 5/12/2005 4:22:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 7672    DMK, yes I know ! I was horrified as well, but in total I removed already over 40 since the beginning of the season. And they can only be killed by burning them. Yuck !
Date: 5/12/2005 4:23:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 7672    LSR, thanks on the tip on Advantage. As I said, I only want to use natural products because of the past experience with all that chemical stuff.
Date: 5/12/2005 4:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 46527    No, please don't apply the oil to the back of her neck as many essential oils are too strong to use directly on the skin....buy cheap collars? LOL!
Date: 5/12/2005 5:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 28848    Garlic (ingested) is supposed to repel fleas, I don't know about ticks though.
Date: 5/12/2005 6:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    I use Frontline Plus on my minature Pomeranian, its for ticks and fleas.....I think there is a similar one for cats as they preen themselves all the time...one cat I had used to get them all the time, mum used to get Turps (from the hardware store) and tip it on the back of the tick and you could actually watch them back out of the skin....then you can kill them
Date: 5/12/2005 6:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 7830    I know this is a lil off topic but I laughed because at first glance i thought it said "natural repellent for kids" lol
Date: 5/12/2005 7:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    Don't know how you would do it for a cat but cedar works great. I line my dog's dog house with cedar shavings about 3-4 inches deep and change them out every 2-3 months. It's great bedding and even though I live in an area with lots of ticks I have never had a tick on either dog. Also they have never had fleas and they smell good all the time.
Date: 5/12/2005 7:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 49763    Fire that repels most everything =D but seriously most blood suckers don't like higher levels of garlic mmm garlic. ~~
Date: 5/12/2005 1:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 54444    You need to get s snow monkey...they will groom for ticks on any animal for hourds at a time.
Date: 5/12/2005 9:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 63118    tryu a flea coller, even if its ticks it may work
