She smoothes your hair back from your face And touches your lips i watch the sun set in your eyes at dawn as the sky is Filled with a yellow light As if the whole world knew someone was coming home. The smoke rings of a soul float further into space Like a foghorn in the night No one could ever know your pain But i wonder if the anesthesia pulsing through your veins Could numb the dull ache of watching a mother say Goodbye to her son
Minutes go by like seconds; minutes that i am alive and you are not and envy washes over me like goosebumps As you have knowledge of what is beyond Mortality..You were always a step ahead. Each line on her haggard face is another novel about a fruitless prayer She wishes she could have held you better Held you so tight even God couldn't have pulled you away Like an envious child She pulls the blanket up as if to keep the cold from coming; Useless yet the last thing she will do for this child
It is time to leave, the lady in the white slacks tells her She takes my hand and i scream for her inside You are the only one who hears me As you fade into the burning sun.
This is one of the few poems i ever wrote that i did not date, although judging by dates surrounding it in the notebook i found it in, i'm estimating somewhere between August and September of '99. Thanks for reading, feel free to leave feedback, good or bad! -asylem_supastar
