people on diets really eat like this? uh....con-stip-a-tion?

I tuned into this cooking channel and there's this program where they were discussing about "portion sizes", on what's ONE serving and how to control your portion sizes and that your body doesn't need all those calories and so on. but the amount of food that they consider "1 serving" is just SO small, even for a tiny person. they said 1 slice of bread is one serving, 1/2 cup of pasta is one serving, and 1ounce of meat is one serving.(not sure if it's one ounce or not, but the meat appeared to be a circular thingy with a diameter of only three inches.)

and they showed an example of what a dinner looked like with all those "moderate" portion sizes, and it was unbelievably small. a little ball of meat, a spoonful of pasta, probably one teaspoon of peas and a few teaspoon of other stuff. they said our bodies doesn't really need as much food as we think, we just eat out of habit. uh okay, but my stomach is grumbling..?

I rather die happy than die hungry, I live to eat not eat to live.

Date: 2/16/2005 1:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 63035    I dont believe a person has to live off of small protions of meals to loose weight. Just watch what you eat, drink water, and exercise It worked for me. I went from 140 to about 130, and mind you, Im a HUGE eater -Dr.Stargazer
Date: 2/16/2005 1:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 16916    I don't watch how much I am eating unless it is something that is bad for me. I refuse to eat only a few bites here and there and walk away with a grumbling stomach. Instead I eat salad and heathily cooked chicken. Also, you should be eating 3 meals a day or 6 small meals because if you don't eat as much as you should in the beginning of the day, by dinner time you will eat a lot more!
Date: 2/16/2005 1:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    LOL..I thought much the same thing when they brought in plastic modeals of foods in the serving sizes that are appropriate for a healthy diet..I thought along the lines that I could have eaten all of that and then some LOL..it's amazing when you see just how much a serving size is compared with what we actually eat isn't it??
Date: 2/16/2005 2:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 46527    Eat no processed foods, stay off dairy and you'll lose weight, it works!
Date: 2/16/2005 2:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 22992    1/2 cup of pasta is not a spoonful... and yes MOST of those portions are correct, accept meat.. its small but definitley nto one ounce of meat.
Date: 2/16/2005 4:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 20956    Funny you should mention this because last nite my boyfriend and I had steak and vegies for dinner. We had T-Bone steak which are quite large and I told me boyfriend that apparently, health wise, the size of the steak you eat should be no bigger than the palm of your hand. He looked down at his palm and then looked at me and said "That doesnt apply for me, my steak should be no bigger than my arm!" lol, we love our steak in our house and there are no 'palm size' servings happening!!
Date: 2/16/2005 4:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 50864    I believe it is 3 oz of meat about the size of a deck of cards
Date: 2/16/2005 9:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 62915    op emy diest is not like that at all. I am on a point system and I am still allowed chocolate bars and big portions.... I'm like you I'd rather die happy Ghost-Chick
Date: 2/16/2005 9:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    Being overweight isn't healthy or being happy. Some may have a metabolism that allows them to eat whenever and whatever they choose, but that isn't true for everyone. Morbid obesity causes many health risks... Type II Diabetes, Heart Disease, and high risk for stroke and high blood pressure as well as other complications.
Date: 2/16/2005 10:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 47218    portion control is actually an excellent way to control your weight. People tend to put way too much on their plates, and way too much of the wrong things (bread and meat, mostly, not enough veggies). McD's and Chili's have warped our perceptions of a proper serving size-- thus we end up eating way more than we need to and thats where we get our big bellies. Measuring portions onto your plate is a great reality check.
Date: 2/17/2005 5:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 47218    btw, a serving of vegetables is 1/2 cup, not a teaspoon, and a serving of meat is 3 ounces.
Date: 2/17/2005 6:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    Yep, it's unfair that we've been trained to eat for reasons other than hunger...thus stretching your stomachs. It's also unfair that some can eat so little and not lose weight while others can eat like pigs and be skinny. I'm still waitin' on that "miracle-thin pill" to be created! ;o) LOL....
