Protecting your Identity......Zema

I was reading this article and thought I would post it as a gentle reminder that we cannot afford to be slack when it comes to our private information, it's how criminals get your details and how you can protect yourself.

BIN - RAIDING:

Everyday rubbish can offer a wealth of information. The details on credit card receipts, for example, may provide enough information to a fraudster to make a purchase over the internet or telephone. Police recommend householders shred receipts, credit card statements and anything else with personal financial details. Some local authorities have even found homeless people being offered money to scavenge for such documents.

SHOULDER SURFING:

Be wary of anyone looking over your shoulder when you're keying your PIN at ATMs.

SKIMMING:

Try not to let your credit card out of sight, especially in petrol stations and shops you don't use regularly. In restaurants, accompany the waiter to the register. Skimming machines are quick to use and can be half the size of a readers digest magazine. At ATMs, cover the key pad with your spare hand while keying in your PIN.

PHONING AND PHISHING (yes thats how its spelt):

Financial instituations will never cold-call you (or send an unsolicited fax or e-mail)to ask for personal credit card or bank account security details. If in doubt, ask to call them back, using the number printed on your bank statement or credit card. If you get a request by email, don't click on any link included, but go directly to a web address. Fraudsters are now so adept that, when you log on to a bank's real website, they can make it appear as if the bank sent you a personal message directing you to another (fake) window in which account details are requested.

SPOOF LETTERS OR CANVASSERS:

You receive a letter claiming you're the sole benefactor of a recently deceased, wealthy relative. Or you may be told you've won the lottery. The message goes on to request bank and other personal details so the cash can be transferred to you. A more recent spin is the bogus street canvasser asking for donations, subscriptions or membership for a charity requiring bank details or a direct-debit mandate. All this information can be pieced together to impersonate you. If you want to donate, check ID carefully and never give account details on the spot.

FOOTNOTE:

We must be diligent at all times regarding any of our personal banking details. People are duped every day of the week due to a lapse in the safety procedures of such information.

Luv and Peace....Zema

Date: 2/15/2005 10:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 63026    i was thinking of this the other day. on how i should protect my identiy, thanks for the info~joe
Date: 2/15/2005 10:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 20956    good reminder. i cant believe people would do those 'spoof letters' that you mentioned. i think it would be very easy to get sucked into that!!
Date: 2/15/2005 10:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 42945    thats for sure Sara, its such a shame that so many people can be taken advantage of and in a lot of times its sheer stupidity, I had a phone call from a man claiming to be from my bank and offering a life insurance and all it would cost is $30 but he needed to know my bank details, I told him to get lost or I'd ring the police...I rang my bank and told them about it...so yeah, we do have to be very careful...hugs hun
Date: 2/15/2005 10:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    Thanks Sis for this info. One of the women in my building actually tried to read my mail by getting right beside me and touching it. Can you believe that? I asked her what she thought she was doing and she said my mail looked interesting.
Date: 2/15/2005 10:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 22433    man...I've been getting these fraud emails from Washington Mutual Bank (it makes me sick just typing the name), but i've tried everything i can to not get them, blocking them by the address, subject line, etc, but they keep coming through! it was to the point where one morning i checked my email at 6am, I got another one, and I ended up calling the bank (got the number from a website i found on google..not any links in the email), i was SO UPSET with them..near tears..even though i knew they were fraudulant, my brain doesn't think properly at 6am..you know that feeling when something gets you so upset and no matter what you do, you can't stop it? thats how i felt. i wanted to throw my entire computer out the window everytime i got a new email from them. anyway, these emails were basically telling me that I needed to log into my account using my account number and Social security number. First, i'm not even an American citizen, so it's impossible for me to have a social security number, and second, if i did, i wouldn't have any reason to give it to even my best friend...much less to a website! stupid evil spammers anyway! (i know this is long, but once i started venting, i couldn't stop lol)
Date: 2/15/2005 10:24:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 42945    thanks Joe and Sunny we cant be too careful...and Penny, what a cheek that woman had, so brazen, I was using the ATM the other day, and this lady was so close to me, I had to say , excuse me!!!!would you mind moving back!!! I practically lay all over the dang ATM, this age of technology frightens me quite a bit, for banking and all over the net, there was a man who went into his account on the net and found $20,000 had gone missing from his account, and the bank advised him to use "firewall" and anti virus software, updating the latter regularly. They said that you should also keep your operating system and internet browser current, as thieves can take advantage of weaknesses in older versions.....so, it is something that we all shouldnt take too lightly I think....hugs to you all
Date: 2/15/2005 10:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 62422    thank-you zemma, i am always very carefull when useing my credit cards and my bank cards. cyndi
Date: 2/15/2005 10:53:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 42945    Thanks "H" they are persistent arent they???get in touch with your ISP and get them blocked for good...thanks Sweet Cyndi, you want to stay that way hun and you'll never get ripped off...hugs to you all
Date: 2/15/2005 11:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    I also got an e-mail wanting me to give my pin number and social security number over the internet to a bank I never even heard of. I cannot believe the audacity of these types. This is an excellent post Sis!
Date: 2/16/2005 1:01:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 42945    Penny, its even harder to believe that people are taken in with these types of fraudulent claims, a friend of mine was billed for two jumpers that she didnt purchase from the UK on her credit card and to this day doesnt know how it happened...she wont have any cards at all now...hugs
Date: 2/16/2005 1:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 59418    It's sad that we have to be so careful these days...Thanks for the post grammy
Date: 2/16/2005 2:23:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 42945    thank you Suzy, it is a shame hun but these days it seems to be a fact of life that we be forever diligent with these matters....hugs hun....Grammy
Date: 2/16/2005 3:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 33925    Right now at work, we are getting alot of calls from customers who are receiving emails from MSN saying that their account needs to be updated. It is a BOGUS email, and for all those that ARE calling in, I hate to see those that haven't and clicked on that link and gave personal banking info out.
Date: 2/16/2005 3:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 11341    Also be careful to not put all your important papers in one spot like photo ID, birth certificate etc or you will have someone actually living their life as YOU. This happened (is happening) to my hubby. If you keep them in one spot, make sure its a safe spot!
Date: 2/16/2005 4:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 18928    excellent post zema!!
Date: 2/16/2005 10:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 51070    Whenever I go to the ATM, I stand really close and block it so nobody can see. I've had people try to look over my shoulder, but I just give them dirty looks and they back off. And speaking of lack of responsibility: some girl dropped a check card yesterday on campus. I found it on the floor and took it immediately to Lost and found. Who knows what kind of slimy people there are hereabouts? My grandparents were victims of identity theft.
Date: 2/16/2005 12:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 15904    how messed up is this world today?
Date: 2/16/2005 6:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 42945    Gee LL I dont open any emails from anyone that I dont know, but with MSN anyone would think that they would be alright, but then I wouldnt give out details over the net to them anyway....thanks for that little piece of advice DMK, if I dont keep all my stuff together I forget where it all is.(worry about my old brain lol!)thank you Stace, I think a little reminder doesnt hurt thats why I posted it....Creepy Freak, I'm sorry that your grandparents were victims of Identity theft, thats awful, you really cant afford to trust anyone with your personal info, thanks Lighthouse! you are so right buddy, and its getting worse also I believe with what I see on tv with all the warnings from banks etc....thank you all for your comments here, they are much appreciated, hugs to you all...
Date: 8/19/2005 11:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    It's crazy all this stuff today..Ugh.
Date: 8/21/2005 1:20:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 42945    thanks Amers, but we do live in awful times now!!! hugs
