NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The mother of a newborn boy who survived being tossed out of a moving car has been identified and interviewed by investigators, authorities said Friday.

"It is my belief ... that this person is the birth mother of the child," Broward County Sheriff Ken Jenne told reporters.

The sheriff also said that the interview with the unidentified woman "puts a whole new light on this story" but he gave no specifics. A news conference was planned for later in the day to provide more details.

"We do believe at this point ... that we will soon have an admission to the birth of the child," Jenne said.

The boy, believed to be less than an hour old, was thrown out of a car alongside a busy street Thursday afternoon, police said.

The 8-pound, 2-ounce boy, whose umbilical cord was still attached, survived with minor injuries and was hospitalized in good condition Friday. Nurses at the hospital have nicknamed the child Johnny.

State law lets a mother leave a baby at any medical facility or fire station within three days of birth without any questions asked.

"That provides parents or women with an option. You don't have to just abandon your child in way that would endanger his or her life," said Veda Coleman-Wright, a sheriff's office spokeswoman.

A woman stopped and found the baby inside a small plastic bag. She scooped him up and took him to a nearby sheriff's office, and he was transferred to Broward General Medical Center.

The good Samaritan, who originally thought the couple had thrown a puppy out the window, was "very distraught, very upset," Jenne said. The woman's name was not released.

Investigators had been searching for a white, older-model large sedan that witnesses observed leaving the scene. The baby's rescuer told investigators she observed a man and woman arguing inside the vehicle. But she saw only the back of their heads, Jenne said, and could not provide a good description.

North Lauderdale is about 15 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale.

I saw this on the news this morning and have been talking about it all day to people at work who hadn't heard. This is so aweful the things women do to their own children! I could never immagine ever harming my little boy, I just love him to death!!

Date: 2/11/2005 10:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 46527    I think that before offering the woman a punishment we should for the reasons WHY she felt this was the only option open to her.
Date: 2/11/2005 10:15:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62675    LSR that is a good point! I am interested to find out why too.

Date: 2/11/2005 11:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 23075    TypoDemon...when no one is looking...heck I don't care if they are watching. I'm probably doing them a favor.
Date: 2/11/2005 11:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 47218    a puppy would have been upsetting, too. It just doesn't make sense. She could easily find someone to adopt the baby if she didn't want it. Not like there isn't plenty of access to adoption services. Did she think she wouldn't get caught? Lady must've been off her rocker.

Date: 2/11/2005 11:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    Red, here in the United States a parent can leave their child up to a certain age at a hospital, county government agency and other such places and they won't be held accountable because too many newborns end up abandoned to the elements and don't survive. There are options other than tossing a baby out of a car window. She could have left it even in a crowed hospital and someone would have rescued it. I think of women that want babies and can't have and women that have lost their babies and then hear about those that murder or try to murder their own and i lose it!
Date: 2/11/2005 11:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 11341    Im just glad the little guy is ok. As long as he will never be returned to this "parents" he should be just fine. I wish him a great life!
Date: 2/11/2005 12:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 33517    I heard this on the local radio station here this morning...I am so glad that the baby is alright....but, you know the sick thing about it all.....The mother will probably get the child back.....You just watch and see....She will say she was going through a "thing" and they will return him to her....Usually that is the way the system works...I hope it doesn't in this case...the poor baby has already been through enough....**Big Canadian Hugs**
Date: 2/11/2005 12:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    i saw it on the news and hope the ones that did it get in a lot of trouble. it's awful 8-(
Date: 2/11/2005 12:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 47218    tina, she may have a hard time regaining custody if she goes to jail for attempted murder.
Date: 2/11/2005 1:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 46527    Penny, although that facility is in place and a very good facility at that, I still wonder IF it is as 'questionless' as it is made out to be, it must gothrough a woman's mind 'what if I get asked questions, what if someone sees me?'...we cannot know what was in that woman's mind and a lot of us remember just how emoitional and irrational women who have very recently given birth can be. Not defending her actions, just trying to realise WHY.
Date: 2/11/2005 1:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 62624    This is AWFUL!!!! Hopefully, she'll get what she truly deserves!!!
Date: 2/11/2005 3:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 12709    Oh... I'm glad they found her. I heard about this on Howard Stern this morning and they said they hadn't found the parents. I'm glad they did... it's ridiculous. It's SO easy to just drop it off at a fire station without hurting it. That's why they HAVE that law. You don't even have to say who you are!
Date: 2/11/2005 4:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 12709    The part about the baby being in a plastic bag REALLY bothers me for some reason.
Date: 2/11/2005 5:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 62422    how sick some people are. a child is a gift from god and we should keep our children safe and out of harms way. cyndi.
Date: 2/11/2005 6:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    Well, I am glad that the baby is okay..what an awful thing to do!!
Date: 2/16/2005 8:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 62901    Actually, the "good semaritan" who "found" the baby and brought it in.... was the lady in the car, & mother all in the same. She made up the whole story... baby never got tossed out of a moving car, and there was no car. Just some stupid woman craving attention.
