A 14-year-old abuse victim told police her moment to escape more than a year of abuse and captivity in her own home came when her father took a trip to Flagstaff and his live-in girlfriend went to work. The girl told a former neighbor that she had been neglected and abused by her father and his girlfriend. She was afraid of her father, because he threatened to "come after" her and anyone she told of the abuse, according to a report from the Tucson Police Department. "She said she could not go back to living like this," according to one officer's account. The neighbor, hearing the victim's tale, made her dinner and then called police. The girl said she had been locked up since the week before Christmas 2003, the victim told police. She last attended school in May 2002. When they went to investigate the girl's claims, police found the window in her small room covered with a blanket. They saw two or three articles of clothing, two pairs of shoes and an algebra book. They also saw where a sliding lock used to be on the outside of the bedroom door. While trapped in the dark room, the girl told police she tried to remember her multiplication tables and occasionally got a book to read. She would get in trouble for pulling up threads in the carpet, and the woman would punch her, the girl said. Two other girls from the girlfriend's previous marriage shared a room with two beds, a closet full of clothes, a TV and toys. The girls told police the victim ran away because she had been locked up. They said her father locked her up because he was angry that she'd been taking food and "getting into things she's not supposed to get into." Police reports also show that when officers questioned the girlfriend, she said the girl always ran away when her father left, and that the girl had been getting homeschooling from her father because "she talks too much in class." But when police asked to see examples of the girl's school work, the woman told them she threw it away whenever she found it lying around. And the woman's two daughters told police they never saw the older girl getting schooling. At one point during the initial investigation, the woman got a phone call from the girl's father. She became distressed, told police she was going to throw up and ran to the bathroom.

With how frequently this sort of thing has been uncovered recently, makes me wonder how many kids are still out there, locked in rooms or closets right now. Pretty sick thought. |
