What do you pay for a haircut?

  Author:  15228  Category:(Discussion) Created:(2/10/2005 7:12:00 AM)

I got my hair cut and styled yesterday at a nice salon near my house. I love it, I went to a new lady. I paid 35.00 for a wash, cut and blow-dry. She spent a lot of time showing me how to blow dry my hair step by step. I think in all we spent an hour on my hair.

My daughter had an appointment after school. Kayla has hair to the middle of her back, very thick and it was all one layer. This lady was the same with Kayla, she put in layers and spent a lot of time showing her how to style and blow-dry it. We paid 45.00 for that cut and it took an hour and a half.

Kayla's friend was with her. Amber also has very long hair almost to the small of her back and she was so impressed with the lady she made an appointment to have her own hair done on Saturday. The lady said she would only charge her 30.00 if she came in with a wet head and didn't have it blow dried. I didn't think anything of her making an appointment. She makes tons of money babysitting and is almost 16, I just assumed she was allowed to make those kind of decisions.

When I took Amber home I went into the house with her to talk to her mother who I know a little bit...and the woman went off! Not on me really, but on the fact that Amber was going to spend that much money on a hair cut..she used four letter words which in her case isn't all that unusual as she uses four letter words as nouns, verbs and adjectives. She said her mother was a cosmetologist and she knows how much you pay for a haircut and it ISN'T 30.00...and on and on, blah blah, blah (she called later and apologized).

I honestly didn't think what we paid was unreasonable. The lady said next time Kayla gets a hair cut it won't be that much, but she had to do quite a lot to it (which she really did, her hair looks beautiful now). Plus, you can always cancel an appointment which I know Ambers mother did. My family and I went out to eat last night and while we were gone the beautician called my house, it was on my caller ID...I cringe to think what Ambers mother said to her.

As I said, I've always paid between 25 and 35.00 at salons for haircuts...is this totally outragous? At WalMart I've paid 23.00 for nothing more than a glorified trim.

Date: 2/10/2005 7:20:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Awwww, come on, how much do you pay? Is it more or less than what I paid?
Date: 2/10/2005 7:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 53052    your making me feel cheap.. my last cuts cost me 13 bux! no wash but a wet down and blow dry(with wash it would have cost 15) and they took about 45 minutes to cut my hair and did a really good job and went over it to make sure everything was cut right and it was also nicely styled
Date: 2/10/2005 7:35:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Hmmm, maybe it is a lot that I paid, but in other parts of the country I've lived I've always paid around that much. My mom said her sisters go to a salon and they pay 85.00 for a cut! And they both have short hair. I think that seems like an awful lot of money.
Date: 2/10/2005 7:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 3648    I pay 9 bucks for a cut and style...And my hair is always done right...I never have a worry when I go in....I've been going to this place (same lady) for about 2 years now....She always shows me how to get the same look at home and always says "Susan, if you don't like it come back and I'll do whatever needs done for free"....
Date: 2/10/2005 7:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 16916    I pay about 15.00 for my haircut (was and cut), I go to a place called Fantastic Sams. It isnt that ritzy of a place but they do a good job. If I want my hair blowdried and styled it costs about 25.00. It just depends on where you go..I have a place that I don't pay too much at and still get good quality. Some places are more or less "what you pay for is what you get" meaning if you pay more its better quality. SO I dont think 35.00 is unreasonable..but it is possible to get a cheaper haircut and get the same thing.
Date: 2/10/2005 7:48:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Jellie, that's the problem I've been having is finding someone here that will do my hair right. I've been in this area for two years and have gotten two bad haircuts and really horrible highlights. I'm so happy I finally found someone I like.
Date: 2/10/2005 7:50:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Grey Eyed Girl, wow! Only 9.00??
Date: 2/10/2005 7:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 53052    i think hair cuts is all about what your willing to pay for and how hard you search for someone good.. unfortunately finding someone good is all about trial and error... sometimes how much you pay doesnt mean how good the cut will be
Date: 2/10/2005 7:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 58308    My aunt only charges me 10.00. I don't know how much it is without my discount. My hair is right passed the middle of my back, takes two perms. I had it done a couple of weeks ago for this wedding Saturday and she only charged me 70.00. Normally, that's a little more then a hundred. Christine's (my best friend - the bride of the wedding Saturday) had her hair done, too (It's about the same length) Aunt Colleen charged her 115.00. (wash, cut, perm and style)
Date: 2/10/2005 8:03:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Yeah, the trial and error is what hurts! It had been 7 months since I'd last got my hair cut. I was so scared about trying yet another person.
Date: 2/10/2005 8:05:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Zeebs, for all that, it seems pretty reasonable to me, especially for a perm, but what do I know!
Date: 2/10/2005 8:08:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    The lady said she would charge me 60.00 for highlites, but that includes two different colors she'll weave into my hair...Is that unreasonable do you think? My hair is just below the bottom of my neck.
Date: 2/10/2005 8:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 44321    I pay about 20 bucks or a little more for a wash and a cut, a cut for me though,is to get it all chopped off,and off my shoulders nothing fancy
Date: 2/10/2005 8:14:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Medusa, well, you've made me feel slightly better, but surely someone else out there pays as much as a I just did.
Date: 2/10/2005 8:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 44960    Each time I go to the Gossip Parlor, I usally donate around $55.00. Now thats a lot of gossip!! (((PrissieHuggzz)))
Date: 2/10/2005 8:33:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Finally! Miss Priss you've made me feel better. I didn't get any gossip with my cut, I feel gyped.
Date: 2/10/2005 8:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 59418    I get my mum to do it! She's taking a hairdressing course at the moment
Date: 2/10/2005 8:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 56630    My aunt does mine, so I can come in and get one for free anytime...lol
Date: 2/10/2005 8:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 17560    I pay around the same Kelly....by the way, how much do you pay for the tip? I was just wondering this the other day because my husband said that hairdressers make their money on tips...is that true?
Date: 2/10/2005 8:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 62579    It is only $8.00 for a cut blowdry and style here in my town.
Date: 2/10/2005 8:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 62579    Oh and a wash too
Date: 2/10/2005 9:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 13283    Right now nothing ..... I gave my female barber a pit bull . She agreed to give me 8 cuts in return . I usually pay her 10 dollars . On Wednesdays ( a special ) she charges me 8 dollars . I like hers . She gives me a shampoo also with the cut . I can also eat and drink beer while I wait in line for her in the salon . I tip her a couple of dollars when she doers a really great job ! Razzy aka
Date: 2/10/2005 9:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 54963    I pay anything from about 70.00 to 75.00 and that's with a family discount. I always get my hair colored and cut and all that nice stuff. My next style is a black layered chop with scarlett streaks in the bangs.
Date: 2/10/2005 9:20:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Metal Princess, you are so lucky to have a hairdresser as a mother.
Date: 2/10/2005 9:23:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    TootsiePie, I gave her 4.00 for my tip and five for Kayla's. I know she has to pay rent for her station, I asked if I could pay with a debit card. She asked if I could pay with a check because she has to pay the owner to use the debit card system.
Date: 2/10/2005 9:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 35720    I don't cut my hair... but in the rare occassion that I do, I pay $25.
Date: 2/10/2005 9:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 17081    $7.50 plus a tip
Date: 2/10/2005 9:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 21435    Hiya, Kelly I usually pay eight dollars and give my barber a four dollar tip. (She's really cute Write on.....
Date: 2/10/2005 9:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 4144    i pay 9.95. that covers a wash, cut, blow dry and style. for a root job i pay 15.00 and i take my own bottles (i have to buy two cause my hair is getting too long for just one) and i usually tip 10.00. ok.........my friend works at the place i go and that's why i get to take in "outside" color! and she charges me for a kid's cut. and if i call her for same day service she always says ok but sometimes i have to dry myself so she can deal with "real" customers!!

Date: 2/10/2005 9:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 24319    I get mine for free, well before I decided to let it grow. I'm a hairdresser so the lady I worked for did everything on me for free (haircutts, perms, colors, etc.) and if for some reason she couldn't do it, my aunt is also a hairdresser and does my hair for free. I also cut my family and friend's hair for free. Now, if I was to pay for my hair to be cut, it would be around 20 bucks. I am extreamly happy that is not the case, though, lol.
Date: 2/10/2005 10:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 16845    There is Nooooooooo way I'd ever pay that much for a hair cut...I think I generally pay about $15..
Date: 2/10/2005 10:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 62876    Well, I have been getting highlights, too - so that plus a cut and dry runs me around $150....and I am friends with the girl so that is a discount.
Date: 2/10/2005 10:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 62876    Oh - there are highlights and lowlights, so two colors, too. I like it but it is high-maintenance. My hair grows fast.
Date: 2/10/2005 10:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 62675    20 bucks total with tip. But I would spend more if needed!
Date: 2/10/2005 10:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 46527    Most I've paid was almost $300...a normal amount would be about $50.
Date: 2/10/2005 10:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 31255    25.00 and that is about the cheapest in this area.
Date: 2/10/2005 10:39:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Seems like the average everyone pays is around $15.00. HipChik, mine grows fast to, which is lucky considering the bad haircuts I've gotten recently.
Date: 2/10/2005 10:43:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Also, when I got the (horrible) highlights and haircut I paid 100.00, that was at JC Penny's, a place everyone said was good. So 150.00 doesn't seem to bad if you get a haircut, highlights and lowlights.
Date: 2/10/2005 10:48:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    LSR, is that about the normal amount for your area? If I were to go to someplace like New York city I would expect to pay that.
Date: 2/10/2005 10:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 56293    I'm not sure LOL! Whenever I get my hair cut, I also get it foiled ..... So with all that .. I pay around $75 - $80. Which I think is pretty cheap because they use four bowls of color on my hair .. just for HIGHLIGHTS .. my hair is thick lol.
Date: 2/10/2005 10:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 62998    My hair is really thick so I kinda feel bad making the hair stylist work that hard (hehe no don't) but here its about $10 but I usually give her another $10 for a tip so I pay $20 - Typo Demon (i wash my hair before i go)
Date: 2/10/2005 10:59:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    SocialSlacker, that sounds really cheap if they use that much color in your hair.
Date: 2/10/2005 11:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 58308    I think that's a good price, Kelly. Especially if she's doing two different colors.
Date: 2/10/2005 11:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 34912    $20
Date: 2/10/2005 11:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 46527    I'm quite close to London Kelly so yes, about $50 is the norm, you can get cheaper but it often means a poor cut and not it's worth 'saving' the money when you only have to go get it redonw elsewhere.
Date: 2/10/2005 11:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 50678    for a hair cut like $11 at great clips I could be off a little.
Date: 2/10/2005 11:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 26363    Lordy, I haven't paid for one in nearly ten years! Very handy good friend...hehe. It doesn't sound to me like you were ripped off. I would pay that much for a nice cut/style. Most places don't take the time to explain how to care and style it.
Date: 2/10/2005 12:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 51194    my father inlaw pays 6.00 bucks and i pay 6.bucks for my bangs being trimed but a full hair cut is 13 bucks
Date: 2/10/2005 12:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 15904    I got mine cut for 14
Date: 2/10/2005 12:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 10245    it's not unreasonable... You get what you pay for, but it may be out of their budget? I've paid up to $60 for just a cut and style. I hate to, but I got spoiled by having really good cuts when I was working in a salon. Of course they got me hooked for free
Date: 2/10/2005 12:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    I haven't had mine cut for about 3 years. I'm thinking about doing it soon though, even though I like my hair longer. Usually pay about 10 bucks, although I might go somewhere nice and have someone wash it and dry it so I don't have to for a day...
Date: 2/10/2005 1:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 56489    I pay 15.00 with a 5.00 tip.
Date: 2/10/2005 1:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 35160    nothing. ever since my hair has grown back , {lost it with the chemo a few years ago{. i trust NO ONE with my hair but mom.
Date: 2/10/2005 2:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 63011    I pay $11 for a wash, haircut, and style. And the place I go to always does a good job. -GreenClover
Date: 2/10/2005 2:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 42522    I pay $12.00 for a cut.
Date: 2/10/2005 3:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 51070    I go to a very nice salon by my house. They're friends of my mom's, so they always take extra time with me. But they wash, blow dry and layer my hair and...it costs me $90. No kidding. But it's worth it.
Date: 2/10/2005 3:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 33925    The most I have ever paid for a hair cut is $20.00 and that included a wash, treatment, cut, blowdry and style.
Date: 2/10/2005 3:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 20956    ummmm too ashamed to say!! okay, about $150 but thats Australian, so just a bit under double that is equal to US$
Date: 2/10/2005 3:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 20956    thats for a cut, colour and treatment, by the way
Date: 2/10/2005 3:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 63036    I get mine cut for free. My mom is a cosmetologist, When she had her hair salon, she only charged $10 for a wash, cut, and style..
Date: 2/10/2005 4:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    I'm jealous of everyone who has friends or family who cut their hair...of course it could be a problem if you don't like it or don't want to go to them any more. My cousin was stuck going to her father-n-law for years because he owned a salon. She was glad when he finally retired.
Date: 2/10/2005 5:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 62915    I pay about that much but only because I found a really good hairdresser who gives me the exact style I want and knows what I want. She is one of the best hairdressers and evveryone who goes to the salon is thrilled with the results. i don't mind paying more for quality Ghost-chick
Date: 2/10/2005 5:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 53909    I pay Zero. I have a friend that does it for free.
Date: 2/10/2005 7:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 51070    LOL! That reminds me of a funny book I read when I was a kid. It, I believe, was a Babysitters Club Little Sister Book. Anyway, she went to get her hair cut, and the lady misunderstood her and gave her a MULLET! LMAO! But yeah, I'm glad I get my hair cut by my mom's client and, on top of it, someone who knows what the heck they're doing.
Date: 2/11/2005 7:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 30786    I'm a hairdresser, and we charge 20 bucks CND for a woman's wash, cut, and style if it's short, 25 if it's long. Now we are raising our prices to $30 for long hair because of the work and time you put into it. For foils with two colors at my salon would be about $60-$65 CND for hair your length. I think that if you find someone you really like who does your hair just so, then it is worth paying a little extra if you love it
Date: 2/11/2005 7:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    I pay about $15.00 and give a $5.00 tip for a haircut only.
