I do that when im really really tired except I can see them with my eyes open too mine are little black dots with orange middles. So maybe it has something with being half asleep/tired?

Hehehe..well when I close my eyes I see shapes moving and lights..all different colors moving all over. Usually in 'front' of my line of vision...they dance and move. And then it starts to hurt looking at them like that so I stop...  |

I think it is from pressure on your blood vessels. I don't find it to be strange. I used to press down on my eyes when I was younger so that I would see colours even more intense than if I just closed them.  |
