i too wanted to be a journalist. I didnt go to college for it but I took Journalism and Mass Media at my highschool just to get the feel of it. I actually learnt alot and hada great experince for it. Just take alot of english courses and writing classes. Read the newspapers and magazines to get a flare on how to write a good article. Maybe call the paper and ask if you can shawdow a reporter for a day? Who knows you might be able to-Joe |

first, have you tried talking to your high school counselor? If your counselor is worth their salt, then they should have a full library of this information-- classes to take, other ways to prepare, how to do a college search, getting scholarships, you name it. Talk to them first. |

talk to someone in the field.. a reporter someone at a paper or magazine, ask them how they got into the job, what kind of things they took in school(education), how easy is it to find a job, it's ok to ask them about how much they make(to give you an idea what to expect) how many jobs there are in the field, learn about the field before you decide to lock yourself into it and goodluck |

that is stupid advice. Planning for college is a very complicated process, and it is never too early to get started, especially since you are already in high school. You are on the right track-- you need to be thinking NOW what sorts of classes and activities are going to look good on your college applications. You need to start compiling a list of schools that you would like to attend (with your parent's input), and be prepared to speak to a representative when the college fair is in town next fall. Since your counselor is useless, you are going to have to take initiative on this. There are many publications out there with good information-- princeton review, consumer reports (the best-ranked colleges issue)to name a couple. You may be able to find these at a library. But your counseling office should have copies of these and more, which is why I think you should, despite your counselor's advice, give them a visit soon and ask to take a look. Don't ask. Tell them, "I'm here to find out what information you have on planning for college." Don't take no for an answer. |

What you are looking for is premium information. The publications industry makes a bundle off of students researching for college, so they're not going to be just giving it away online. This means that what you find for free online isn't going the best or the most complete advice. (which is why I strongly urge you to find paper copies of the publications in your library or through your counselor). Still, here are some good websites-- from the college board: http://www.collegeboard.com/plan/ The Princeton Review: http://www.collegeboard.com/plan/ Consumer Reports best colleges: http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/rankindex_brief.php Also, try visiting websites of journalism departments and admissions departments of colleges that you are interested in. You can learn a lot about journalism programs and the application process that way. |
