• Laugh a lot. Some days it is not easy to laugh. Part of the problem may be that we take ourselves too seriously. We can find lots of humor in life.
An ancient proverb suggests “that a merry heart does good like medicine.” Hearty laughter encourages the brain to discharge endorphins that serve as a natural painkiller. You may recall a time when you were aching with pain, at least complaining, but something happened that started you laughing and the more you laughed the better you felt. Laughing will be good for you and those around you.
• Learn a lot. There is little outside the grasp of the man who is willing to apply himself to the task of learning. Most of the sought-after jobs demand a degree of education. The person who can read can learn most anything he needs to know.
We may learn in the most unlikely places if our minds are sufficiently alert.
“An English professor walked into his classroom one day and wrote these words on the blackboard: ‘Walk with light.’ He then asked the students who wrote these words.
“The students, supposing that phrase to be a profound thought from a great work of literature, guessed various authors. Some said Goethe, others Emerson, and still others guessed the poet Wordsworth. But the professor said, ‘No, I read these words on the traffic light on my way to the school this morning’.” Truth can be discovered and appropriated for productivity if there is a willingness to learn.
• Live a lot. Put your heart and energy into living. Learn to 'live' as long as you live.
• Stay alive. Eat properly. Exercise daily. Read. Write. Paint. Think. Turn the TV off. Wash the car. Mow the grass. Clean the house. Take a vigorous walk. Help those in need.
• Love a lot. Love yourself. Love others as much as you love yourself. Lose yourself in serving others.
• Leave a legacy. Our legacy is what we pass on to those who come after us. The legacy we received was given to us by our parents and ancestors. May there be something more on our tombstone than the dash between the date of birth and the date of death. What we put in that space will be the legacy we leave for others.
If you laugh a lot, learn a lot, live a lot, and love a lot, you will leave a legacy for which those who follow you will be eternally thankful.
These suggestions will help one to be a happy and successful person.
