Hedgehog for Christmas....shimmer

I recieved a hedgehog from my boyfriend on christmas eve ( I LOVE him to death...my boyfriend and the hedgie...hehe) The problem is I started feeding it Vitakraft as that was all I had at the moment. I threw in some carrot pieces but those weren't eaten. Last night, I added banana and tuna to the mix to see if he liked that. I woke up to a water bowl full of banana and hedgie food. So today I took a trip and picked up Iams cat food, mealworms, and chicken. The mealworms are gone from the bowl but they may just be in the cage. My hedgie doesnt come out a lot and usually sleeps. Im worried about him as he is the first one I have owned. If I take him out, he eventually uncurls and runs around exploring but it takes a bit of time ( which is understandable as he may be nervous) I have a space heater in my room that I keep on at night so he should not be cold...I dont know what else could be causing him not to eat or play in his cage..Any help is greatly appreciated

Date: 12/27/2004 4:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 18516    Awwww a hedgehog, how cute!! I don't know anything about them but maybe you should take the little guy to the vet and see if they can tell you a bit about him and you can study up on them too. I'm sure you could find some really good books.
Date: 12/27/2004 4:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 36901    This might help a bit. http://www.drpetra.com/Exotics/Feeding%20Hedgehogs.htm. Sounds like you already know what to feed him though.
Date: 12/27/2004 4:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 56489    It will take him quite a few days to even adjust to the surroundings, & to get to know you, do you have any other pets that could be delaying his adjustment? Is that what they really eat? yuk But anyway put the food where he will be eating from all the time show him/her where it's at and that's it.
Date: 12/27/2004 7:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 16845    Probably just still adjusting to the new environment....I think their cute but I got a zoo going already so there's no way I could have one LOL
