By all accounts, officer Manuel Solis of the Los Angeles Police Department should be dead.
But he's alive and well, thanks to heavenly protection - and a gold guardian angel he always pinned to his protective vest.
"It saved my life," he says humbly.
When Solis and his partner, Officer Donald Boon, were summoned to Reynaldo Rivera's house for a routine domestic call, they never expected to be fighting for thier lives. But they were ambushed by Rivera who was wielding a high-powered, rapid-fire assault rifle. Boon and Solis never saw the attack coming.
Boon was hit in the stomach. He was dragged to safety by Solis and two other police officers who arrived to back up the pinned-down patrolman. His wound was serious and required emergency surgery. Solis fared much better. Wearing his protective pin, he suffered only a minor shrapnel wound to his face.
After the skirmish was over and Rivera was arrested, police returned to the crime scene where they found the lucky officer's pin, which had been lost during the frantic shootout.
