How can I answer this question ?

I am preparing myself to answer this question BUT I just can't think of a good enough answer for it.... normally by now a certain key relative ( trying to keep this as private as possible) would have sent Christmas stuff, no call or email has come in saying anything to let us know what is happening. I am trying to figure out how to lightly explain why nothing has come. I would completely 100% understand if money were an issue this year, but have not heard one peep letting us know what is going on, things from this person are very much looked forward to each year ( not by adults so you know), and one year to suddenly have nothing seems kind of odd, I would feel awkward ( ungreatful) if I were to call and ask... so I am just trying to think of what to say when asked why this person forgot completely this year... no card, call anything. I don't even feel right posting this question here as it is, I just need a good strong outside opinion on how I can handle this situation and question when it arises... Thanks
