Did Jesus really rise from the dead? Are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and Paul, telling the truth? If so, how do we know what they wrote is the truth?

Can what was written concerning the resurrection be trusted?

Date: 12/20/2004 11:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 36704    I know from studying it, there are a lot of different versions of what happened, like it was not Jesus on the cross but a stand in and also that it was him on the cross but he was not actually dead when he was taken down. I guess it all boils down to whether a person believes what is written in the bible or not. There's also the theory that his death is symbolic and not literal. Whether someone trusts it or not is going to be based upon what they believe.
Date: 12/20/2004 11:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47162    i know..wouldn't it be cool if we could just somehow look back 2000 years, at the cross at the grave , and just see for oourselves, instead of having to put our trust in what five men wrote about it?
Date: 12/20/2004 11:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 36704    It would be nice, but I guess it wouldn't be having faith then.
Date: 12/20/2004 11:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47162    basei wouldn't be too quick to say that...if those people really saw jesus rise, does the fact that they actually saw it, mean they didn't exercise faith? Faith isn't about taking a thing, and then just hoping it's true, it's about taking a truth and trusting in it!
Date: 12/21/2004 3:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 53961    Yes, because other scripture testifies to it like "The Book of Mormon". http://scriptures.lds.org/3_ne/summary
Date: 12/21/2004 5:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 62118    Wasn't the book of morman written when people had access to Bibles?
Date: 12/21/2004 7:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 7849    You have to believe in it in order for it to be the truth. and YES he did rise from the dead.
Date: 12/21/2004 10:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 48809    Spirit says that there are many false teachings in the Bible ,and many things in it are taken literally that are meant to be symbolic only! However ,I have never heard spirit say that Jesus was not crucified ( you may be sure that if I am ever told this ,that I will certainly post it here!)When you ask if Jesus really did rise from the dead, then if the Bible can be believed, it is very possible that he did, since he was seen by others and tried to prove that even though he had died , he still was the same person and continued to live in his spiritual body. This is not a miracle as some insist it is! This is a very common and ordinary thing that we are all capable of doing when we pass on .... and even before... and what happened that day is not unique to Jesus only , but is available to all persons and even animals! Jesus simply came back to prove that no one ever dies and that life is eternal! You ask if we should believe that Matthew, Mark,Luke, John and Paul are telling the truth. I will leave this to those to answer who believe that the Bible is without error....but when some things are not reported on for many years after the fact, then I think we must all take into consideration that there are bound to be errors. Faith is great, but knowledge is even greater!
Date: 12/21/2004 10:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 51173    It is an event of history, and can be trusted as written. There are methods used by historians to judge whether a historical document is trustworthy or not, and the Gospel writer Luke, in the words of Sir William Ramsay (who was called the greatest archeologist of the 20th century), "should be ranked highly among the greatest historians of antiquity, perhaps even as ancient history's greatest historians." Ramsay should know; he built his life's work around refuting Luke - 35 years, and Luke was never wrong once.
Date: 12/21/2004 10:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 47618    Who knows...and on the question of truth of the Gospels...do remember that till we found the wreckage of the Titanic, the general consensus of all if not most was that the Titanic went down in one piece. It wasn't till she was discovered that we found it in two. For a span of about 73 years we knew wrong. Why? This was the words of the survivals themselves. No. It is because they took the work of those with more clout. Now, just imagine what could happen over 2000 years.
Date: 12/21/2004 11:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 22721    If you belive in the bible, than yes. If you don't belive in the bible, than I don't think you would believe in it. I believe he did. His death was to save the world, for anyone living.
Date: 12/21/2004 11:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 34487    I am positive Jesus rose from the grave. I have no doubts and there is no debate for me on this issue. I will say though, proof isn't always what science defines it as. Proof in this case, involves experiences with God, recognizing the miracles in one's life and most of all...Faith.
Date: 12/21/2004 1:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    From Mormon.org: "The Book of Mormon is another witness that Jesus Christ really lived, that He was and is God’s Son. It contains the writings of ancient prophets. One of these, Lehi, lived in Jerusalem around 600 B.C. God commanded Lehi to lead a small group of people to the American continent. There they became a great civilization. God continued to call prophets among these people. The Book of Mormon is a collection of the writings of their prophets and record keepers. It is named after Mormon, one of the last of these ancient prophets.

These prophets knew about Heavenly Father’s plan for His children and the mission of Jesus Christ. They recorded that Christ appeared, after His Resurrection, to the people in America, taught them His gospel, and formed His Church among them. The book contains the teachings of Jesus Christ, testifying of His Atonement and His love. It supports and verifies the Bible.

The Book of Mormon concludes with a great promise that those who read it and sincerely pray about it can know by the Holy Ghost that it is true (Moroni 10:4)."

Date: 12/21/2004 3:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    I often ask that myself, and the answer that I receive most often is that you have to have faith in order to believe it... I'm still not exactly a confirmed believer, but I do know that astounding things beyond belief can and do happen. So, I guess that it is possible..what I was taught recently in my Shaping Western Civilization class, is that it is taught that Jesus walked the earth "not as the man, but as the Christ"..so maybe when they say that he rose from the dead they don't mean literally his body, but his spirit walked the Earth.
Date: 12/21/2004 4:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 11240    Yes. The Biblical accounts say the body was missing. The thing is though, that people who knew him didn't recognize him at first. He was not present in his own body until after his disciples trusted that he was risen and then that body was taken up to heaven. His appearances today are like the ones where someone's body is transfigured by him; he takes another's form just long enough to do his deeds. Spoken by a witness of this transfiguration. God Bless.
Date: 12/21/2004 5:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 61999    What was written has to be trusted. You can't say one part of the Bible is true and the other part is just heresay. But that's what you call faith, IMO.
Date: 12/21/2004 8:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    Are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and Paul, telling the truth? If so, how do we know what they wrote is the truth? MY question is how do you know that its not?
Date: 12/21/2004 8:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    And gee I would really enjoy this debates but I'm going to be gone for a few days.
Date: 12/22/2004 9:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 31673    "so maybe when they say that he rose from the dead they don't mean literally his body, but his spirit walked the Earth." Jesus Christ appeared to his Apostles after his death. They thought they were seeing his spirit. He said, "A spirit hath not flesh and bones and ye see me have." So, he was not a spirit, but really did miraculously overcome death and take up his body again. And I believe that body is still with him... I've heard some people say that when he ascended to heaven Jesus' flesh body was left behind... but if that's the case, then he really didn't OVERCOME death. I believe he did. To the author... how do I know it's true and not just made up by the apostles? There were many witnesses to the resurrected Jesus and the empty tomb other than the Apostles. Their accounts just don't appear in the Bible. Plus, if in a court of law, 12 different people said they saw exactly the same thing happen... and described it almost exactly the same, that would be proof that it happened. There's well more than just the 12 Apostolic witnesses to the resurrection of Christ.
Date: 12/22/2004 1:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 15621    There are many things that point to it but in the end only faith can tell you.
Date: 12/22/2004 7:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    Oh..thanks for the info Melodius. I have to admit that I have not ever read the Bible through, so thanks for pointing that out to me.
Date: 12/22/2004 10:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 30742    The Bible warns that many false and lying spirits have gone into the world . Jewish Historians also wrote of the curcified Christ who rose from the dead, so you don't have to take God words, you can also believe historians who were wrote Jewish History books. Jesus Christ was God in the flesh who came and lived on earth. Here are Ten reasons you can believe Christ rose from the dead. 1.During the Jewish Feast of Passover, Jesus was swept away by an angry crowd into a Roman hall of justice. As He stood before Pilate, the governor of Judea, religious leaders accused Jesus of claiming to be the king of the Jews. The crowd demanded His death. Jesus was beaten, whipped, and sentenced to a public execution. On a hill outside of Jerusalem, He was crucified between two criminals. Brokenhearted friends and mocking enemies shared in His deathwatch. As the Sabbath neared, Roman soldiers were sent to finish the execution. To quicken death, they broke the legs of the two criminals. But when they came to Jesus they did not break His legs, because from experience they knew He was already dead. As a final precaution, however, they thrust a spear into His side. It would take more than resuscitation for Him to ever trouble them again. 2.The next day, religious leaders again met with Pilate. They said Jesus had predicted He would rise in 3 days. To assure that the disciples could not conspire in a resurrection hoax, Pilate ordered the official seal of Rome to be attached to the tomb to put graverobbers on notice. To enforce the order, soldiers stood guard. Any disciple who wanted to tamper with the body would have had to get by them, which wouldn't have been easy. The Roman guards had good reason for staying alert--the penalty for falling asleep while on watch was death. 3.On the morning after the Sabbath, some of Jesus' followers went to the grave to anoint His body. But when they arrived, they were surprised at what they found. The huge stone that had been rolled into place over the entrance to the tomb had been moved, and Jesus' body was gone. As word got out, two disciples rushed to the burial site. The tomb was empty except for Jesus' burial wrappings, which were lying neatly in place. In the meantime, some of the guards had gone into Jerusalem to tell the Jewish officials that they had fainted in the presence of a supernatural being that rolled the stone away. And when they woke up, the tomb was empty. The officials paid the guards a large sum of money to lie and say that the disciples stole the body while the soldiers slept. They assured the guards that if the report of the missing body got back to the governor they would intercede on their behalf.

4.About AD 55, the apostle Paul wrote that the resurrected Christ had been seen by Peter, the 12 apostles, more than 500 people (many of whom were still alive at the time of his writing), James, and himself (1 Corinthians 15:5-8). By making such a public statement, he gave critics a chance to check out his claims for themselves. In addition, the New Testament begins its history of the followers of Christ by saying that Jesus "presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by [the apostles] during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God" (Acts 1:3).

5.When one of Jesus' inner circle defected and betrayed Him, the other apostles ran for their lives. Even Peter, who earlier had insisted that he was ready to die for his teacher, lost heart and denied that he even knew Jesus. But the apostles went through a dramatic change. Within a few weeks, they were standing face to face with the ones who had crucified their leader. Their spirit was like iron. They became unstoppable in their determination to sacrifice everything for the one they called Savior and Lord. Even after they were imprisoned, threatened, and forbidden to speak in the name of Jesus, the apostles said to the Jewish leaders, "We ought to obey God rather than men" (Acts 59). After they were beaten for disobeying the orders of the Jewish council, these once-cowardly apostles "did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ" (Acts 5:42).

6.History is full of martyrs. Countless men and women have died for their beliefs. For that reason, it is not that significant to point out that the first disciples were willing to suffer and die for their faith. But it is significant that while many will die for what they believe to be the truth, few if any will die for what they know to be a lie. That psychological fact is important because the disciples of Christ did not die for deeply held beliefs about which they could have been honestly mistaken. They died for their claims to have seen Jesus alive and well after His resurrection. They died for their claim that Jesus Christ had not only died for their sins but that He had risen bodily from the dead to show that He was like no other spiritual leader who had ever lived.

7.The Sabbath day of rest and worship was basic to the Jewish way of life. Any Jew who did not honor the Sabbath was guilty of breaking the law of Moses. Yet Jewish followers of Christ began worshiping with Gentile believers on a new day. The first day of the week, the day on which they believed Christ had risen from the dead, replaced the Sabbath. For a Jew, it reflected a major change of life. The new day, along with the Christian conversion rite of baptism, declared that those who believed Christ had risen from the dead were ready for more than a renewal of Judaism. They believed that the death and resurrection of Christ had cleared the way for a new relationship with God. The new way was based not on the law, but on the sin-bearing, life-giving help of a resurrected Savior.

8.The disciples were caught off guard. They expected their Messiah to restore the kingdom to Israel. Their minds were so fixed on the coming of a messianic political kingdom that they didn't anticipate the events essential to the salvation of their souls. They must have thought Christ was speaking in symbolic language when He kept saying over and over that it was necessary for Him to go to Jerusalem to die and be resurrected from the dead. Coming from one who spoke in parables, they missed the obvious until after it was all over. In the process, they also overlooked the prophet Isaiah's prediction of a suffering servant who would bear the sins of Israel, being led like a lamb to the slaughter, before God "prolong[ed] His days" (Isaiah 53:10).

9.While Jesus hung on a Roman cross, crowds mocked Him. He helped others, but could He help Himself? Was the miracle suddenly coming to an end? It seemed like such an unexpected ending for someone who began His public life by turning water into wine. During His 3-year ministry, He walked on water; healed the sick; opened blind eyes, deaf ears, and tongue-tied mouths; restored crippled limbs; cast out demons; stilled a violent storm; and raised the dead. He asked questions wise men couldn't answer. He taught profound truths with the simplest of comparisons. And He confronted hypocrites with words that exposed their coverup. If all this was true, should we be surprised that His enemies didn't have the last word?

10.The apostle Paul wrote, "If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you" (Romans 8:11). This was the experience of Paul, whose heart was dramatically changed by the resurrected Christ. It is also the experience of people all over the world who have "died" to their old ways so that Christ can live His life through them. This spiritual power is not evident in those who try to add belief in Christ to their old life. It is seen only in those who are willing to "die" to their old life to make room for the rule of Christ. It is apparent only in those who respond to the overwhelming evidence for Christ's resurrection by acknowledging His lordship in their heart.
