What do you think about people who buy pets on impulse! JellieBean

I was thinking about this while watching Animal Cops Housten on Animal Planet. Their was this rescue of 2 Macaws and and African Grey Parrot, some very smart BEAUTIFUL birds that someone just abandoned) SO I guess my question is, should people be allowed to just purchase these animals from a local petstore? Most people dont understand the time and effort that it takes to put into a bird or another exotic pet or even a dog. I just think people should have some knowledge about what they are buying..I hate when people buy animals on impulse, they should at least learn about their eating habits and such. I know that these birds mentioned are VERY expensive and usually people cant afford to impulse buy them..but it happens and it upsets me deeply to see an animal (one of Gods creatures I might add) sitting in a dark corner with green poopy water and a poop enrusted cage with nothing but empty seed casings in their food dish! Well this has turned into a big long paragraph so I will stop here. This is mainly targeted at people who are buying a living creature and 2 months down the road wont care for it because it is too much work..tell me what you think

Date: 12/19/2004 9:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 6915    That made me very sad to read and I believe that of all the animals, birds as house pets is a no-no. Birds are meant to fly free, not get their wings clipped and sit in a cage. Anyways, I almost bought an animal on impulse but I talked myself out of it. I went home and read up on the animals ( including its eating habits and living habitat) Now I know that I CAN properly care for it. Im glad I checked though. I have a cat, a dog, a guina pig and 2 aquatic frogs. I must say all my pets are well fed, live in good conditions and get attention and play time frequently, but it isn't always easy. Its great to throw food in their cage and call them happy but thats not the case. They need attention and love! xoxo
Date: 12/19/2004 10:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    I agree. Don't do it if you can't commit for the long haul. I have a one dog and two cats. Their yearly vet bills far outweigh my own health bills. Not to count all their other expenses and needs. Commitment is ongoing and how those animals will be cared for should always be considered and figured into the family budget.
Date: 12/19/2004 10:03:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16916    I agree, but I own 4 birds and all of them are happy and well cared for. There wings are not clipped and they are only in their cages when its bedtime
Date: 12/19/2004 10:06:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16916    You are right Brenda, animals are a lifetime commitment. It saddens me to see animals abandoned at shelters just because the owners didnt have the time for them. I do agree that people should have the money to care for their pets before buying them, but if expenses get to high..its hard to just get rid of the pet that you love..I guess you have to do what is in the best interest of your pet..but if my animal was sick I would definatly find means to take care of them.
Date: 12/19/2004 10:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 49539    At the time, they probably don't realize the responsibilities they have to take on. It's immature but pet store clerks can't deny a customer...unless our government makes a law that makes pet stores take background checks on all their customers. For some reason I have a feeling some states already have that law, does anyone know?
Date: 12/19/2004 10:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16916    I know that you can buy any animal you want in a petstore in my state. They should make you do a background check. If you want that animal bad enough and intend on taking care of it..one wouldnt mind waiting a few extra days for the animal. Sadly petstores just want the sales!
Date: 12/19/2004 10:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 62267    I think it is okay if they are going to take care of the birds and no there should be no law that you have to know everything about an animal before you can buy it because without having one and expiriencing it you don't know what you're getting in to anyways because each individual pet is different. They're not all the same trust me...have much animal expirience but it is wrong for someone just to have abandoned those birds.
Date: 12/19/2004 10:15:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16916    I agree Freaq you should not have to know EVERYTHING about birds, but you should know something! And I also think that petstores should check and make sure you dont have any animal cruelty offenses on your record before giving you a poor defensless baby! Also it would interfer with people purchasing animals to be in test labs.
Date: 12/19/2004 10:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 62267    I bought a bird and knew NOTHING about them I just thought it'd be fun to have around, lmao. WRONG!!! I gave him to my Aunt's aunt lol. She has alot of birds and loves them so I knew he'd be safe there.
Date: 12/19/2004 10:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16916    LOL yup birds aren't for everyone..im glad yours got a good home though
Date: 12/19/2004 10:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 20956    i guess a lot of people fall in love with puppies and kittens and baby animals. they are very cute! but i totally agree with you, people need to think long and hard about whether they can have such pets and they must realise that most animals live for many years .... most dogs have life span of 8 - 12 years. I think this applies to people who give animals as Xmas presents too ... make sure the person you are buying it for REALLY wants such a pet and will take care of it, without a doubt. good post
Date: 12/19/2004 10:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 62267    He was a sun conure an he squawked allll the time!!! Because he constantly wanted attention and I didn't have time for him :-( school and all. But ya he got a great home.
Date: 12/19/2004 10:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    My parents have birds, which I amnot happy about. They love them and enjoy their company, but the care is becoming overwhelming along with their other pets. We have all tried to help out but feel they are taking on more "than they should" at this point in life. It poses an even greater health risk for my Mother because she is ill and still has so many pets to care for. At this point she refuses to let go and spends every extra cent she has on all her "babies". That doesn't worry me, but some are aging just as she is and that worries me because I know if affects her health. We all (her children) just try to help as much we can.
Date: 12/20/2004 6:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 62675    I do feel it is wrong, but there is nothing we can do about it.
Date: 12/20/2004 7:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 23075    I have a parrot and a cockateil. And their cage door is only closed when I am not at home..as I have a cat. They can fly throughout the house as they please..howver I have spent a great deal of time training them...they will come to me on command..they gototheir house on command...I am an ACO and some people I think in my opinion need to be educated about animals before purchasing them or having them given to them. and Christmas is NOT a good time to give animals as pets.
Date: 12/20/2004 7:17:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16916    Thanks for all of your replies And Paddy, I own 2 teils', a parakeet and a parrot and they are ALL well trained and I they come to me on command and they go to there "house" too hehe..and they only go in their cages at night and when no one is home..the only reason they go in their cages at night is 1. I cant supervise them and they shouldnt be left alone to hurt themselves and 2. they wont go to sleep if they arent in their cages because they are too interested in other things! LOL
Date: 12/20/2004 8:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 62704    i know what you mean. some people have no idea that having a pet requires alot more than they think. I was one of those people. I bought a puppy from the pet store, a yorkie. He was so adorable but i worked all day and he would stay home alone barking and driving the neighbors nuts. I had no time to train him to go to the bathroom outside. I would be so busy when i got home from work i had hardly any time to give him the attention he needed. So i found a good family for him and had to give him up. It was alot more work than i thought.
Date: 12/20/2004 8:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 62704    you're right about the expenses Brenda. within a week of having the puppy he got sick and i brought him to the vet. the bill was like $120.00 plus all the supplies they need.
Date: 1/3/2005 12:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 62383    I live life on the wild side... I always buy stuff without thinking :P But thats how I got my cat Nando!
