Marine Sacrifices Finger to Save Wedding Ring...PL

VICTORVILLE, Calif. (Dec. 12) - When Marine Lance Cpl. David Battle learned he'd either have to sacrifice his ring finger or the wedding band he wore, he told doctors at a field hospital in Iraq to cut off the finger.

The 19-year-old former high school football star suffered a mangled left hand and serious wounds to his legs in a Nov. 13 fire fight in Fallujah. Battle, who is recovering at his parents' home in this desert city 80 miles northeast of Los Angeles, came under attack as he and fellow Marines entered a building. Eleven other Marines were wounded.

Doctors were preparing to cut off Battle's ring to save as much of his finger as they could ''But that would mean destroying my wedding ring,'' he said. ''My wife is the strongest woman I know. She's basically running two people's lives since I've been gone. I don't think I could ever repay her or show her how grateful ... how much I love my wife, my soul mate.''

With his approval, doctors severed his finger, but somehow in the chaos that followed, they lost his ring.

Although Battle was disappointed, his wife, Devon, said she was honored. ''I can't believe he did that,'' she said. ''At first I was mad when he told me, but then I realized how lucky I am to have him in my life.''

The couple, who met in the eighth grade, were married in June, just two weeks before Battle left for Iraq. He hopes to eventually return to the Marines, and to replace his wedding ring, but that will have to wait until he recovers. In the meanwhile, Battle's high school has planned a banquet in his honor next week.

''We need to make more David Battles,'' said Daniel Pierce, the school's assistant head coach. ''He is one amazing guy.''

Date: 12/13/2004 5:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 11341    That is the sweetest most romantically stupid things Ive ever heard!
Date: 12/13/2004 5:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 11341    Oh I forgot to add its TOTALY messed up they lost his ring!
Date: 12/13/2004 5:26:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 32070    i know DMK I thought the same thing....
Date: 12/13/2004 5:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    In my opinion that was not romantic, it was ridiculous, I personally would rather have my husband's finger attached, than a piece of metal that could easily be purchased again, or bought. A ring is nowhere near as valuable as my love's beautiful fingers. The doctors should not have given him a choice. If the marriage doesn't work out, he will be missing a finger for the rest of his life. Poor guy!
Date: 12/13/2004 5:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    I meant to say repaired instead of bought... duh... not enough coffee for me
Date: 12/13/2004 6:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    I'm sorry, they could cut/ destroy/ incinerate the darn ring for all I care. It's a chunk of metal.
Date: 12/13/2004 6:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    Then some orderly most likely stole it anyway.
Date: 12/13/2004 6:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 3688    I gotta go with BCar, they can cut, burn, destroy my ring, I'd be upset sure, but it could be replaced, they shouldn't have even given the idiot a CHOICE *rolls eyes*
Date: 12/13/2004 6:52:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 32070    I still think it was romantic ( as well as stupid). But hey, he's young. Personally, I'd rather have my finger. Good point DP...
Date: 12/13/2004 6:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 3688    in THEORY it's a romantic gesture, in practice...it's stupid...and he should have someone kick his butt....if nothing else they BOTH coulda gotten new rings... Like someone else said, what if that marriage didn't last? *shakes head*
Date: 12/13/2004 7:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    LOL DMK, I have to agree. I'm sure his wife would have gotten over it, or I'd hope so anyway.
Date: 12/13/2004 7:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 13119    I agree with everyone that called him a nut job. Its a bloody piece of metal, who cares, the kid was probably so doped up on morphine that he didn't realise what he was agreeing to. Besides which, he could have had the stupid thing soldered back together if it was the be all end all for him.
Date: 12/13/2004 8:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 13729    Ridiculous...ly stupid.....
Date: 12/13/2004 8:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 62928    I think that was really sweet. I mean that was his FIRST wedding band. From the DAY of his wedding. If someone told me i would lose my Tiffany anniversary ring or my finger, I'd pick my finger. I mean sure i could go back and buy the exact same ring on tiffanys.com but it wouldn't be MY ring. I mean they already had to cut off most of his finger anyway.......Frontzgirl
Date: 12/13/2004 8:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 42515    I don't think he was stupid for choosing the ring over his finger. I think it WAS stupid though that they apparently lost the ring.
Date: 12/13/2004 11:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 13119    Do you seriously think that a chunk of metal is more important than your health? If they can't get your slave bracelet off does that mean you would let them cut off your hand?
Date: 12/13/2004 12:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 62928    I would have Been SO PISSED that they lost the ring though.
Date: 12/13/2004 12:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 62928    But its not just a CHUNK of metal, Its what the chunk of metal represents.
Date: 12/13/2004 12:33:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 32070    I'm starting to think I should've put this in the debate section..lol...Thank you all for replying....
Date: 12/13/2004 12:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 33925    I have to agree with the others..Its a piece of metal..When I worked at the lumber mill my hands swelled really badly..Now I wasnt going to cut off my finger to save the wedding band that was imbedded in my finger from the swelling..I had them cut off the band! Its a ring..replacable (although I am still waiting two years later..LOL)
Date: 12/13/2004 1:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 62970    hmm ... my finger or a ring that can be replaced???? I guess i'm not the romantic type hehehe
Date: 12/13/2004 1:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 18527    Speaking from the point of view of someone who has been married 6 years and has had to buy 3 wedding rings for my husband, it is just a chunk of metal. He still has the first one that broke, and the second one he lost (he was upset, I was a little ticked, but I got over it) and is on ring # 3. Rings can be fixed, a missing finger is forever (or at least until technology gets better...)
Date: 12/13/2004 6:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 62915    I agree it was a bit stupid but I feel it was romantic none the less Though I would be upset the my boy lost his finger... where is he going to wear the wedding ring now? LOL! Ghost-chick
Date: 12/14/2004 4:43:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 32070    I agree with you all. I would rather keep my finger too. But I still think it's messed up that they lost his ring, after he chose ( and it was his choice) to lose his finger instead of his ring...
Date: 5/23/2005 10:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    He loves her... *tears* DMK said it best.
Date: 5/23/2005 10:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    But you know, I'm wondering if losing his ring finger will make him ineligible for active duty now?
Date: 5/24/2005 11:54:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 32070    I think so too Penny...
Date: 5/24/2005 12:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 35160    the thought behind the gesture is sweet, but i dont even think so. i would not trade a finger for a ring. ya can get another ring and it will be just as special as the other one. hes stupid... @_0 @_0
Date: 5/26/2005 7:04:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 32070    I don't know Shay. His finger was badly mangled anyway. I know I would be upset if I lost my ring. Although I would rather have my finger
( but if it was badly mangled I dont know)
