Girl, 8, is suspended for bringing 30 Jell-O shots to school ~Super Princess~

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — An 8-year-old girl is serving a nine-day elementary school suspension for bringing to school what appeared to be about 30 "Jell-O shots," though it was unclear whether they contained alcohol, a Jefferson Parish schools spokesman said.

The incident occurred Nov. 29, as the girl stood after classes outside Geraldine Boudreaux Elementary School in Terrytown, a New Orleans suburb, schools spokesman Jeff Nowakowski said. A teacher spotted liquid dripping out of the student's bookbag, looked inside and found what looked like the small cups of alcohol-laced gelatin that are sold in bars, Nowakowski said.

The girl told Principal Dorothy Bailey that her mother, who works in a bar, makes alcoholic shots at home and sells them at work. The fourth-grader said her mother had instructed her to take the shots to school and sell them, three for $1, "to make some money for Christmas,'" Nowakowski said.

The shots were turned over to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, which will test them to see if they contain alcohol.

The girl was suspended for violation of two school rules: possession of a "lookalike," or something that appears to contain drugs or alcohol; and possession of such an item with intent to distribute to other students. Under the system's "lookalike" rule, the girl's suspension will stand no matter what the sheriff's department finds.

"The school system's position is, it doesn't matter if it had alcohol in it or not," Nowakowski said.

The names of the girl and her mother were not released.

School system rules also require that mother and daughter undergo an interview with school officials and a three-hour counseling session. The mother must also allow school officials to test her daughter's hair for signs of drug use, Nowakowski said.

LOL Okay I could see maybe the little girl stealing them and taking them to school and when she got caught lying and saying her mom told her to. But if her mom actually sent her to school to sell alcohol to children, their are some serious issues there! The mother had to have known she would be caught..I think the daughter lied when she got caught, maybe not realizing the severity of her lies.
Date: 12/8/2004 12:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 13119    if they don't have alcohol in them no problem. Although it is a weird thing to do.
Date: 12/8/2004 12:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 29262    An 8 year old bringing jello shots **shakes head** I don't believe it was the mother who told her to take them to school and sell em. She was probably scared and didn't know she would get in so much trouble. Maybe if the kid was between the ages of 14-17 I would believe the mother MIGHT have done it. If she thought that way, she would know that the kids were not going to make a profit out of it. Maybe it was just jello and her mom told her to sell the jello..
Date: 12/8/2004 1:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 32070    If they did have alcohol in them I think the mother should be arrested for telling her daughter to sell them to other kids...
Date: 12/8/2004 1:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 55386    That is wrong. First of all, the little girl shouldn't be suspended. Her mother told her to, she just obeyed orders. Second of all, the child and her surroundings should be carefully looked into by Children's aid after this incidident.
Date: 12/8/2004 1:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    Anyone else reminded of the Mad TV skit where Cosby is advertising Jello shots to kids?
Date: 12/8/2004 1:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 62100    That is CRAZY..oh my gosh!!!!
Date: 12/8/2004 2:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 35720    That's the stupidest thing I ever heard... also, why didn't they just taste the jello shots instead of doing extensive research on them? Idiots.. I hate schools.
Date: 12/8/2004 2:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 44321    I could be wrong, but maybe they were regular non-alchy jello cups, and the mother thought the kid could sell jello at school for the christmas money.. I can see a slim chance of this being innocent. If they were the real deal then it is not a rare occasion for a kid to tell a story to get out of trouble, and not realize how much worse they make situations. But ya know it is hard to make snap judgements on stories like this because there are parents out there that would be this ridiculous.
Date: 12/8/2004 2:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    When I first read this I thought it was like jello in syringes! Brother! Some parents!

Date: 12/8/2004 4:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 5061    Good grief!would you not have smelled the alcohol,or why didn't they just do a taste test.sounds as if someone wanted to make a mountain out of a mole hill.More drama this way.
Date: 1/17/2009 7:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 23101    I think the schools rules go a little TOO far. Yeah, she shouldn't be bringing that stuff to school but honestly, little kids do things like this all the time & don't really know any better. But allowing school officials to test her daughters hair for signs of drug use & a 3 hour counseling session? Give me break...
