They have wolf spiders here and they cant really hurt you.. I use to always catch them when I was little. Just think they eat all the pesky bugs. I am in the midwest, I Just dont like black widows and Brown recluse spiders. The spider you saw is fine. I wouldnt worry. Even that bad ones, arent that bad. Here I didnt find much for your state, but this site for Missouri has lots of pictures, might help u http://www.conservation.state.mo.us/nathis/arthopo/mospider/kinds.htm#anchor874397 |

After seeing the picture of the wolf spider at the link you gave Got Mike, the spider here didnt have such a segregated butt like the wolf spider does. |

Sounds like you have what we call a "fly catcher" here in the south..it's basically harmless other than it's ability to scare the fire outta ya..it feeds on other pesky insects..unlike it's next of kin the black widow (which is posionous). I know this doesn't take the scare out of it..but maybe it will ease the fear of being bitten. hope it helps.. *Walks with the Night** |

Hi DMK..it's nice to meet you also. I don't blame you a bit for having hubby hunt it down..(grin)..as spiders do have the uncanny ability to surprise the fire outta ya..they rank right up there with snakes in my book..lol |

I have no clue, but I keep a can of bug spray handy for times like this. Seems like this time of year, all the creepy crawlers try to find my basement to stay warm in. |

lol I can't believe you didn't kill it. I would have found something, some kind of spray. Even if it wasn't bug spray. Spray it till you can kill it with a shoe, frying pan, fork.. |

I get those a lot, too. I don't know what they are, but I did look them up once and they aren't harmful, just huge and creepy. I think they're some kind of wood spider. Get used to them... they're your new roommmates Hairspray really slows them down and gives you time to find something to smoosh them with |

I absolutely hate spiders. They seem to like to fall on my head or face.. Happens to me every few months *shivers*... I wish I could help with what kinda spider ya got loose in your house, but it does sound like either a wolf spider or a wood spider.. Both are harmless, but still scare the beegeezus outta us.. lol... We have to be careful with our spiders cause we have a lot of Brown Recluse's down here, and those things are nasty lil' creatures.. *shudders again* *hugs* |

Thanks for all the replies The spider went back to whereever it came from. Hubby looked on top of the cabinets and no spider. You know Merc when we first moved in here there were a TON of spiders, but now there is only one here or there. It felt like the little spiders sent this spider for revenge LOL. *shudders with Amanda* |

They probably thought they had the place to themselves for a while there and took over. Old houses are just so full of them in all the dark palces that you can't see. We tore down the ceiling in the bathroom to raise it up and opened up into an elcosed attic area.... YUK! It was like something out of the Munsters. I've noticed a lot less of them around the house since it got cleaned out up there, too. Spiders don't bother me so much, but I hate having to knock down webs. |
