Ok so here I am in the kitchen putting away the dishes, I open a cupboard to put some dishes in there and I freeze! Staring at me from near the ceiling is a big black spider! Its about the size of a quarter, a bit bigger I guess (including legs) with white markings on its back. I was not about to get close enough to see exactly what the markings look like *shudders* The legs on the spider were thick as was its body. I was trying to look it up on the net but seeing all those spiders is only making me paranoid. I cant even keep my feet on the ground and I feel like things are crawling all over me! I did sneak back in to the kitchen to see if I might be able to get a better look and its gone *GASP* I know its not actually gone, its just waiting so it can sneak up and get me! *faints*

Help me!!!

By the way I live in Mid Michigan if that helps any.

Date: 12/7/2004 7:46:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11341    This spider was pitch black except for the white markings on its back. They scare me too! I am seriously sitting here with my feet off the floor!
Date: 12/7/2004 7:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 35160    from your decription it doesnt sound poisinous{sp}, but they are still scary none the less, lol. i hate them things. yuck.....

Date: 12/7/2004 8:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 62383    They have wolf spiders here and they cant really hurt you.. I use to always catch them when I was little. Just think they eat all the pesky bugs. I am in the midwest, I Just dont like black widows and Brown recluse spiders. The spider you saw is fine. I wouldnt worry. Even that bad ones, arent that bad. Here I didnt find much for your state, but this site for Missouri has lots of pictures, might help u http://www.conservation.state.mo.us/nathis/arthopo/mospider/kinds.htm#anchor874397

Date: 12/7/2004 8:19:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11341    After seeing the picture of the wolf spider at the link you gave Got Mike, the spider here didnt have such a segregated butt like the wolf spider does.
Date: 12/7/2004 8:20:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11341    I wasnt flat but not real plump either. It was shiny black, it didnt look hairy. *prays it cant jump!*
Date: 12/7/2004 8:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 62904    Sounds like you have what we call a "fly catcher" here in the south..it's basically harmless other than it's ability to scare the fire outta ya..it feeds on other pesky insects..unlike it's next of kin the black widow (which is posionous). I know this doesn't take the scare out of it..but maybe it will ease the fear of being bitten. hope it helps.. *Walks with the Night**
Date: 12/7/2004 8:38:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11341    Hi Walks with the Night, nice to meet you. Well, it scared more than the fire out of me thats for sure! Im gonna have hubby look for it when he gets home just to be sure.
Date: 12/7/2004 8:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 62904    Hi DMK..it's nice to meet you also. I don't blame you a bit for having hubby hunt it down..(grin)..as spiders do have the uncanny ability to surprise the fire outta ya..they rank right up there with snakes in my book..lol
Date: 12/7/2004 9:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    I have no clue, but I keep a can of bug spray handy for times like this. Seems like this time of year, all the creepy crawlers try to find my basement to stay warm in.
Date: 12/7/2004 9:38:00 PM  ( Admin-MA )   *shudders* I do believe I would have passed out, I HATE spiders, and for spme reason they LOVE comming down on their little web from the ceiling inches from my face.... I'm so glad we have 8 cats...
Date: 12/7/2004 9:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 6915    To answer the question to the title...I know I dont like them Good luck w/ your spider investigation
Date: 12/7/2004 10:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 53558    I am sorry I can't help you. Where I live we don't get spiders like that...hugs..
Date: 12/7/2004 10:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 24319    lol I can't believe you didn't kill it. I would have found something, some kind of spray. Even if it wasn't bug spray. Spray it till you can kill it with a shoe, frying pan, fork..
Date: 12/7/2004 11:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 51070    That's disgusting! Yeah, make your husband do it! That's what men are for anyway, right?
Date: 12/8/2004 4:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 10245    I get those a lot, too. I don't know what they are, but I did look them up once and they aren't harmful, just huge and creepy. I think they're some kind of wood spider. Get used to them... they're your new roommmates Hairspray really slows them down and gives you time to find something to smoosh them with
Date: 12/8/2004 7:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 28190    I absolutely hate spiders. They seem to like to fall on my head or face.. Happens to me every few months *shivers*... I wish I could help with what kinda spider ya got loose in your house, but it does sound like either a wolf spider or a wood spider.. Both are harmless, but still scare the beegeezus outta us.. lol... We have to be careful with our spiders cause we have a lot of Brown Recluse's down here, and those things are nasty lil' creatures.. *shudders again* *hugs*
Date: 12/8/2004 8:33:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11341    Thanks for all the replies The spider went back to whereever it came from. Hubby looked on top of the cabinets and no spider. You know Merc when we first moved in here there were a TON of spiders, but now there is only one here or there. It felt like the little spiders sent this spider for revenge LOL. *shudders with Amanda*
Date: 12/8/2004 9:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 10245    They probably thought they had the place to themselves for a while there and took over. Old houses are just so full of them in all the dark palces that you can't see. We tore down the ceiling in the bathroom to raise it up and opened up into an elcosed attic area.... YUK! It was like something out of the Munsters. I've noticed a lot less of them around the house since it got cleaned out up there, too. Spiders don't bother me so much, but I hate having to knock down webs.
Date: 12/8/2004 2:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 36967    I am into Spiders, look at my tag gives that away. That sounds like a Wolf Spider. Harmless.
