Well I use to get these white marks on my fingernails but they went away for a while and now they have come back. I've been told that it can mean alot of different things like bruises, zinc deficiencies (I know I spelt dat wrong!), iron deficiencies, too much calcium, etc etc etc. And since the smartest people I know are all on USM (:P) I thought I would ask you all...I would ask my mum cos she usually knows these things (as mothers do) but shes is not here right now...I know I have read somewhere what they meant but I can't remember! Ah! All replies will be appreciated!

Date: 11/26/2004 12:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 36766    I get those little spots on my nails, too. I heard it was caused by lack of calcium or something like that. I could be wrong, so don't take my word for it, lol.
Date: 11/26/2004 12:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 62928    I have those too. When I was like 12 one of my friends said that the more white you have on your nails the more Milk you Drink. But that was referring to the white curves underneath our cuticles. But as far as the white spots. i dunno. I'll ask my mom, shes a nurse. Wow i never really thought about this before. I always just assumed they were like cracks under my nail or like my nail lifting slightly? haha no clue?.... Frontzgirl

Date: 11/26/2004 3:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 16115    I was wondering the same thing, because I have one on one of my nails.
Date: 11/26/2004 3:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 62422    it could be also arsenic poisoning and it could also be lack of calcium too!

Date: 11/26/2004 4:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 10245    I'm a nail tech They are usually caused by trauma or a zinc deficiency. If it's from trauma, they'll grow out and nothing can be done to get rid of them until they do. If it's zinc deficiency, take a zinc tablet (20 milligrams) every day and they should disappear within a couple of days. If you don't like taking stuff, start eating foods high in zinc (pumpkin and sunflower seeds, seafood, mushrooms, organ meats, eggs and wheat germ are some), but be aware that the average "good" diet only yields 8-11 milligrams of zinc per day. The RDA for zinc is 15 milligrams, an additional 15 milligrams is recommended during pregnancy and an additional 25 milligrams during lactation. I would recommend taking a 20 milligram tablet and see if they clear up. If they do, you'll know what to do next time
Date: 11/26/2004 5:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 55297    My mom told me that the white spots on my nails were from where I smashed them or accidentally hit them with something. Maybe its something far mor intircate.
Date: 11/26/2004 7:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 42522    I was always told you couldve just bumped them off of something.
Date: 11/26/2004 9:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 33573    I have two of those right now, I always just assumed I got them from bumping my finger on things. Well ... that changes :P
Date: 11/26/2004 2:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 55386    They're called calcium spots. They're not vital or anything, just means you didn't get a lot of calcium the time that part of your fingernail was made. It just is a sign to drink more calcium than you nomrally do.
Date: 11/26/2004 2:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 62476    I must drink a lot foc alcuim then cause I never get them lol
Date: 11/26/2004 5:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 62914    Thanx everyone! Sounds good! Getting more calcium (drinking more milkshakes! ) and eating more zinc means I can probably eat more pumpkin! Something good has come out of this!
