Bush Campaign to Recut Doctored Ad

INDIANOLA, Iowa - President Bush (news - web sites)'s campaign acknowledged Thursday that it had doctored a photograph used in a television commercial to remove the president and the podium where he was standing. The campaign said the ad will be re-edited and reshipped to TV stations.

A group of soldiers in the crowd was electronically copied to fill in the space where the president and the podium had been, aides say.

"There was no need to do that," said Mark McKinnon, head of Bush's advertising team who shouldered the blame. "Everyone technically works for me so I accept the responsibility."

The original photograph shows a sea of soldiers sitting behind the president as he stands at a podium just left of the center of the frame. Bush was speaking at Fort Drum in New York on July 19, 2002.

Democrats said it is fitting that Bush would fabricate an advertising image.

"This administration has always had a problem telling the truth from Iraq (news - web sites) to jobs to health care," said Kerry spokesman Joe Lockhart. "The Bush campaign's advertising has been consistently dishonest in what they say. But today, it's been exposed for being dishonest about what we see. If they won't tell the truth in an ad, they won't tell the truth about anything else."

McKinnon said a video editor he declined to identify was told to edit the picture to focus on a young boy waving a flag. On his own initiative, the editor removed the podium and copied the faces, McKinnon said.

"I didn't even know it was done," he said. The doctoring was first revealed on an Internet site. "There was no intention on anybody's part to try to represent anything that wasn't true," McKinnon said

The Bush campaign noted that Bush was addressing a large group of troops in both the original and edited version.

"Bush is talking to the troops, the troops are real," said Bush spokesman Steve Schmidt said. He noted that the crowd the president was speaking to was much larger than depicted in the ad.

The ad, released Wednesday, is an emotional appeal in which Bush defends his decision to go to war and empathizes with fallen soldiers and their families.

The ad is running on national cable networks and in local media markets in at least one state, Ohio.

The issue was first mentioned on the liberal Web log www.dailykos.com.

Date: 10/31/2004 7:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    I don't see what the big deal is...it's not like the Democratic party is innocent of not enhancing or changing things to benefit their messages. They act so innocent...BULL. As for them saying they've been dishonest??? How so, they admitted to doing it so that in itself shows them AS HONEST. This is just another tactic by Kerry and his GANG to make Bush look bad. They are really grasping at straws here.
Date: 10/31/2004 7:18:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53689    How is this a tactic by Kerry and his campaign? THis is an AP article...and Bush's people are the ones that admit to doing it. How do you get that Kerry is involved at all? While they did admit to it (not like they had a choice considering they had been caught..lol) the fact that they did it at all makes them dishonest. Sorry, in this incident, it's Bush's "Gang" that is making him look bad.
Date: 10/31/2004 8:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 23610    LOL .... awwww .... What's a "War" president without his fabricated sea of soldiers?
Date: 10/31/2004 8:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    Well, that's not how I see it...that's just how you see it. I don't see the big deal here, they did admit to it and it's not like the DEMOCRATS don't do the same crap.
Date: 10/31/2004 8:42:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53689    I'm still curious as to HOW you get that this is Kerry's doing? Maybe you know something I don't..or you see evidence in this article that I missed.
Date: 11/1/2004 7:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 48809    Oh, what a tangled web we weave........lol.
Date: 11/1/2004 8:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 24924    "...they admitted to doing it so that in itself shows them AS HONEST". What would have been HONEST, would be the editing to include all the pictures of the DEAD soldiers who have died in Bushie's War.
Date: 11/1/2004 9:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 34487    Thinker... I SUPPOSE you've forgotten about CBS and the definite connection to the Democratic party, showing FALSE documents about president Bush. Did they admit to that, OF COURSE NOT but that's excused by you. It was appalling, even to the guy that submitted them to CBS that the Democrats were putting all the blame on him. They TOO, use these PATHETIC tactics but they haven't admitted to them, at least in this case...the Republicans did. It's amazing how someone can come clean on something and admit to it...and still get bashed. SOME PEOPLE have lost all objectivity and only look to point the finger at others, forgetting that 3 more are pointing back at them. As for the DEAD soldiers you speak of...it's obvious you care NOTHING for anyone who ISN'T American and is killed by the hand of an EVIL dictator via shredding machines, torture chambers and many other sadistic venues.
Date: 11/1/2004 9:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 34487    Tarheelgirl...Do you really think that the Dems had nothing to do with revealing this, at a certain time in the election to the public? Please.
Date: 11/1/2004 1:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    LOL...nope, I don't scare easy. You've tried before and you have yet to succeed, so there's your proof. As for "Bush lies" actually the only thing that is coming to light are the LIES about who Kerry is, what he's really accomplished, what he really does stand for...which is nothing and his intentions for this country. The only LIES I've seen come to the forefront, are those lies being SPREADING to make Kerry APPEAR to be a decent human being, in comparison to Bush.
Date: 11/1/2004 1:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    Like I said: whatever eases your pain, YC. And a final note: I am not trying to "scare" anyone. That is the Bush/Cheney expertise.
Date: 11/1/2004 3:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 19613    Can you feel the love?
Date: 11/1/2004 5:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 47296    YC, of course you would not see the lies of Saint George. You are blinded by the republicn rhetoric. Maybe it is time you looked beyond the rhetoric, and began looking at the cold hard facts.
Date: 11/1/2004 5:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53689    LOL @ Dark Phoenix
Date: 11/1/2004 6:05:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53689    I don't know if the "Dems" are responsible for this being uncovered or not. I try not to make assumptions..only opinions based on the facts that I have researched myself. And I don't really see what that matters in the first place. That doesn't make it any less true that the Republicans doctored a photo to make Bush look better. As far as you only seeing lies coming from the Kerry camp, well, it's obvious you haven't bothered to research both sides very much. If you will just take the time to check out factcheck.org, one of the most unbiased sites I've seen, you will see that both sides have twisted the truth to their advantage. And a quick scan through the site, you will notice that more of it has come from the republicans. (But that doesn't really excuse the demacrates either)
Date: 11/2/2004 3:27:00 PM  ( Admin-Kat )   Rudeness and directly insulting comments are not tolerated (this is a FAQ)...I know how things can get heated over politics but we can express our views in a much better way.
Date: 11/2/2004 7:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    TS...you say I'm blind but I think it is you who needs to open your eyes and mind to MANY issues.
Date: 11/3/2004 4:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 47296    YC, as someone who is politically active in my state's republican party, I am very aware of the issues. Those with intentions of future political office have to be aware.
Date: 12/29/2004 11:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 20367    I'm quite tired of reading aimless political retoric that has absolutely nothing to do with the real issues.
Date: 7/17/2005 7:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 16376    LOL @ Lady Nyx
