We want people to think "terrorism" for the last four days.

With his typical flair for drama, Osama Bin Laden inserted himself directly into the presidential election yesterday, and both parties believed it would boost President Bush's reelection hopes.

Bin Laden popping up like a malignant jack-in-the-box four days before the balloting may bolster John Kerry's argument that Bush should have finished wiping out Al Qaeda before turning his attention to Iraq.

But it also refocused the nation on terrorism, which polls show helps Bush. And it reminds voters of their horror on Sept. 11 and Bush's well-received response, as well as obliterating the recent flood of bad news for Bush. "We want people to think 'terrorism' for the last four days," said a Bush-Cheney campaign official. "And anything that raises the issue in people's minds is good for us."

A senior GOP strategist added, "anything that makes people nervous about their personal safety helps Bush."

He called it "a little gift," saying it helps the President but doesn't guarantee his reelection.

"You know, I just don't spend that much time on him really, to be honest with you. And, you know, again. I don't know where he is. I'll repeat what I said: I truly am not that concerned about him" -- George W. Bush

Date: 10/31/2004 2:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 15621    Do you really think this will help Bush? I think it could, but I think most people have made their minds up already, anyway the "Im not that concerned about him" remark is not given directly in the context it was spoken in. If I may
Date: 10/31/2004 2:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 15621    Bush's original comment came while U.S. forces in Afghanistan were searching for the Al Qaeda leader, who had eluded joint American-Afghan military operations designed to find him. "We haven't heard much from him. And I wouldn't necessarily say he's at the center of any command structure. And, again, I don't know where he is," Bush said during the 2002 news conference. "I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him. I know he is on the run. "I was concerned about him when he had taken over a country," Bush continued. "I was concerned about the fact that he was basically running Afghanistan and calling the shots for the Taliban. But once we set out the policy and started executing the plan, he became - we shoved him out more and more on the margins. He has no place to train his Al Qaeda killers anymore"
Date: 10/31/2004 2:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 15621    As you can see, when he made the remark, Osama was on the run and Bush was saying he didnt think he was a threat at that time like he had been in the past and he said "I know he is on the run"..He thought they were going to catch him, they didnt. When you post what you did above and not what I did below you make it sound as though the prez is saying, I ont care about Bin Laden and Im not concerned but he's not saying that at all. Lets be fair.
Date: 10/31/2004 2:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 15228    Interesting how Bin Ladan used DNC talking points and mentioned Michael Moore. NOT that those people are on his side or anything.
Date: 10/31/2004 3:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    ^^Gotta lot of Baghdad Bob's running around*. I don't put anything past Bush and the Karl Rove gang. I'm expecting them to come up with how bin Ladin has been spotted, found, within the next 24 hours. With continued hyping and harping on terrorist this and that, and voter suppression going on, and planning a repeat of 2000, who knows whats gonna happen. I tell you what.....

If Bush steals another election, I highly expect there to be massive outbreaks of violence on the streets. Perhaps full-fledged rebellion. I know I will, I'll be right out there on the front lines if it happens. I know for sure that I am not alone. I'm not afraid to take on Ashcroft and his PHONY "Patriot Act".

Date: 10/31/2004 3:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 15621    Gotta lot of people who like to call others names and not talk about the subject at all to dont we, and you told me earlier to stick to the topic...LOL, ok
Date: 10/31/2004 3:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 23610    Six Gun...why do you ask if I think this will help Bush. I didn't write the news article ... nor am I a member senior GOP strategist or Bush/Cheney campaign official. I am merely posting the news article that quotes them. You would have to address that question to them.
Date: 10/31/2004 3:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 15621    Lady NYX, I wasnt aware you were the writer of this post period. But since you are the POSTER of it was just a question for conversation, not debate.
Date: 10/31/2004 3:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 59385    Exactly Thinker
Date: 10/31/2004 3:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 47296    We have terrorism on our own streets right now, and most Americans do not care. Gangs roam communities at will, and there is little the police can do to stop them. Drugs are more of a problem now than they have ever been. There is a renewal of hate groups in all areas of the country, including many with religious backings. Yes, we have terrorism here, and our current president has yet to address that issue. The war on terror starts at home. Maybe our next president will realize that.
Date: 10/31/2004 7:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    Well, even though you quoted Bush here, you chose to leave out what was said to him to make him say this and what he said after this quote. One needs the ENTIRE conversation to make a TRULY OBJECTIVE judgment call. As for Osama's little appearance...he's obviously trying to keep Bush from being elected.
Date: 10/31/2004 7:35:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 23610    Six Gun ... nah ... I'm not the writer ... it a news article. I don't know why the tape showed up myself ... but I find the comments of the people quoted in the article a little alarming. I'll bet even Bush wants to give them a kick in the for saying something so dumb, especially at this point in time.
Date: 10/31/2004 9:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 53689    "As for Osama's little appearance...he's obviously trying to keep Bush from being elected" I can't see how he is trying to keep Bush from getting elected when he states that neither Bush or Kerry would keep America safe from attacks.
Date: 11/1/2004 4:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 47296    Tarheel Girl, you hit the nail on the head. No president can ever do anything, short of totally closing our borders and coasts, to stop terrorist attacks, and even then, that will not work, since there probably already terrorist cells in America, waiting for their chance to strike.
