A couple neat animals that live near me -- Mike

I live in a rural area so we get alot of wildlife. A couple favorite animals that live near me are the Red-Tailed Hawk and the Turkey Vulture.

A Red-Tailed Hawk is a pretty big bird. They are about 24 inches long with a wingspan of about 4 feet. They are often seen near where I live soaring in lazy circles hunting for mice, rabbits, or squirrels.

The Turkey Vulture is quite a bit bigger than the hawk. They are about 32 inches long with a wingspan of 6 feet. They too can often be seen soaring overhead. They can be told by a hawk due to their much larger size and wingspan. They can be told by an eagle because they have white markings underneath their wings and they soar with their wings held in a "V" shape and tilt from side to side. No other bird does this. Of course, they eat carrion - dead animals.

Date: 10/30/2004 11:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    Red tails are neat birds. I watched a special on National Geographic on a red tail that lived in New York City's central park. Good info, Mike. Write on....
Date: 10/31/2004 12:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 27121    We have red-tailed hawks here. I always see them flying around near my old school. Since there's an open field nearby, the hawks are always hunting there. Just a few days ago, I saw about 7 red-tailed hawks circling in that area as I was heading home from school. I've also seen peregrine falcons around here too. I've seen one in my backyard, another sitting on a nearby house, and one flying along side our car. I was kinda neat. ^_^
Date: 10/31/2004 5:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 23075    I have two Perrigrine Falcons that frequent my backyard.....and we live in the city...figure that one out....scared the bejeepers out of me the first time I went outside...so now I'm very careful before putting out my dog....I check to make sure they aren't there..and of course I do put out chicken meat for them to eat.....
Date: 10/31/2004 5:14:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13886    Which animals safety are you concerned for, the falcons or that of your dogs? I would think most dogs would be more than a match for a couple falcons.
