The missionaries I've come in contact with were very humble and weren't in it for their own glory, but for the glory of God...and since many missionaries have died for their cause and since many missionaries are in 3rd world countries introducing the Word for the first time, I think their work is highly relevant. Who shall question the work of God through msn...not I. |

Missionaries don't convert - the Spirit does; They shouldn't be "preaching your missionary beliefs down someone's throat". It may seem like that. They just feel they have the obligation to share the gospel message. It's up to you to receive it or reject it. It's like you wanting someone to try something that you have found that is great, but your friend is a little apprehensive! Same concept. "they end up acting like they are on top of everyone, and are superior." - Not the ones I know. Matter if fact they are among some of the most humble people I know, usually sacrificing all for His message, without pay or other financial expectations. Invite them in for dinner; You might be glad you did ;-) {{{HUGS}}} From one who was "found" by some awesome young missionaries 22 years ago. |

I don't like the new relativist 'code of ethic' that have been promulgated by modern anthropology. Academic anthropologists bemoan Christian missionaries because they dimantle ancient cultures, but I think anthropologists have a warped view of how humanity operates and progressed. I don't think a culture should be left unchecked when they are ignorant and behind most of the human family. For example. There are tribes in New Guinea that will bury 'alive' those who are dumb (unable to speak) or comatose (their eyes are open but they can't communicate) because they believe that the sign of life is in the voice and once that's gone, a person is dead. An anthropologist watching this will stand by as a dumb child is buried alive (this has happened) while a missionary will intervene and challenge their doctrine of 'life being only in the voice'. The anthropologist is perfectly content leaving them in their brutal bakwardness while the missonary will automatically seek to bring them beyond their ignorance. If it was your culture, who would you prefer? Why do you think idigineous tribes respond so well to missionaries? |

Don't you profess to be a Christian? If so than you have to believe that these people, if they don't receive Jesus, are not going to make heaven their home? So why would you have anything bad to say about someone who leaves their job, their family and the amenities we have in the US to go and spread the good news and serve the sick and dying people of some of these 3rd world country? Do you know what this new culture of tolerance is? It's the end- times, and we need more people that are willing to answer this call. God forbid someone preaches the gospel and somebody actually gets saved. You make it sound like it's some kind of crime. How dare these people care so much about the lost and hurting people of this world that they go and even mention the name of Jesus. The salvation of a soul is actually the most important thing in this world. The bible say's "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?"Rom 10:14) Yes, according to the bible, people should still go around trying to convert everyone. Who cares what I think, that's what the bible says. The missionaries I've known have been some of the kindest caring individuals I've ever met. How many missionaries have you known? What makes you feel that they act like they are superior to everyone else? What exactly are their "missionary beliefs" that you speak of? *LoveisAll* |

I can only imagine the satisfaction of telling the members of a culture their departed loved ones are now spending an eternity in hell. |

I agree with Rod Tod. It is perfectly allright to present ones belief to others , if they want to believe it... but they should never be coerced into believing or have fear tactics used to gain their purpose! Most cultures already have their own beliefs ...even the Aborigines.... and sometimes their own beliefs are on a higher spiritual level than what they are being asked to accept! |

I've never known a missionary to preach their "beliefs down someone's throat" or act like they are "on top of everyone, and are superior". Every missionary I've ever met has been humble and had a loving spirit. They only wanted to help and share Gods word...Mother Theresa comes to mind as an example of the spirit I've witnessed in missionaries... |

unfortunately, missionarism-- well-intended or not-- has proved to be a means of cultural colonization. Not only are missionaries are often the first ones on scene, converting the natives and preparing them for the infiltration of western governments, but their insistance on the superiority of western ways results in the instinction of native cultural practices, language, religion...it is, at the least, problematic. |

I always have to laugh when people say missionaries "preach beliefs down your throat." I've learned that the vast majority of the time all a missionary need do is look in some people's direction and those people will think beliefs are being "preached down their throats." I've had many Jehovah's Witnesses come to my door and I have always been treated kindly by them. Usually, if I'm busy, I tell them so, they smile, hand me some pamphlets and go on their way. I can read the pamphlets or I can just throw them away. But really, I don't feel they have "preached beliefs down my throat." Nor do I feel the need to belittle them, insult them, turn my nose up them, think myself better or smarter than them, publicly redicule them, etc. They are passionate humans, just like me. Also, define "Agents of Good Will" - because to a missionary, speading the good news of their religious beliefs IS being an Agent of Good Will. Perhaps it's the people who complain that missionaries "preach beliefs down their throats" that are the ones with the real problem... They can't simply give the same tolerance they moan and complain about... Can't people just be gracious and respectful and recognize that what the missionaries are doing is very important to them? You don't have to agree, but you can at least recognize their commitment and happiness and just be tolerant and respectful. Remember the golden rule: Do Unto Others and You Would Have Others Do Unto You. Most missionaries would bend over backward to offer you a kind word, to lend a helping hand, to give you comfort in your time of need... and usually they do it with no expectation that you will convert or even accept thier message. |
