From superheroes to princesses, this year's line-up of the most popular costumes includes something for every kid. If you're feeling ambitious, you can pull together a costume with the suggestions below. Otherwise, head to a party or costume store or just go online to score one of 2003's hottest looks.
Pirate 1. Ahoy, mate! The popularity of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl makes seafaring looks one of this year's biggest trends for boys and girls. Whether you take your inspiration from the ever-popular Captain Hook or Johnny Depp's character Captain Jack Sparrow, the attire is the same: Black-and-white-striped pants or skirt, a white top, black boots, and a red sash knotted at the waist. Top off the outfit with a traditional pirate's hat or a red bandana or scarf tied around the head. For an even more authentic look, add an eye patch, pirate's sword, and a "hook" hand.
SpongeBob SquarePants 2. Life deep in the ocean town of Bikini Bottom is just dandy for everyone's favorite sea sponge: SpongeBob SquarePants. And costumes of this popular character won't be hard to come by this Halloween -- you'll likely see them in every costume and party store you pass. You can also create Bob's googly-eyed face and gap-toothed grin on a yellow T-shirt or sweatshirt with fabric paint. Add a white stripe of paint or a white fabric sash and a red tie around the waist. On the bottom, kids can wear Bob's uniform of brown pants and a black belt.
Wizard 3. Harry Potter has cast a powerful spell over Halloween, making all types of wizards super popular. Transform your child into a Potter-worthy wizard by dressing him (or her!) in a long black robe or a black cape over black pants and a black top. Must-have accessories: Round, black-framed glasses, a magic wand, and a sorcerer's hat. Snatch one up at the local costume store or conjure up your own by folding construction paper or poster board into a cone shape.
Princess 4. Little girls can't resist the chance to don a beautiful dress and sparkly jewels, making princess costumes a perennial Halloween favorite. Disney's Princess line (available at Wal-Mart and Toys R Us) features costumes of glamorous gals like Cinderella, Belle, Snow White, Ariel, and Aurora from Sleeping Beauty. Your pint-size princess can also pull together her own unique look by wearing a long, flowing dress (pink, purple, white, or silver are best), elegant elbow-length gloves (if the dress is short-sleeved), and lots of fake jewels. And of course, no princess is ready to meet her adoring subjects without a glittering tiara!
Spider-Man 5. Superheroes are hot, as always, but Spidey's recent turn on the big screen makes the web-spinner the leader of the pack for 2003. A premade costume, like this one from www.birthdayexpress.com, is the easiest way to go. But if you're adventurous you can mimic the look with a homemade costume. You'll need a red ski mask, red gloves, tall red socks, and a blue jumpsuit or sweat suit. Decorate the mask, gloves, and socks with black fabric paint or markers to create the webbed look.
Cat in the Hat 6. Dr. Seuss's famed feline isn't making his movie debut until November, but ahead-of-the-curve kids can bring the big cat to life in time for Halloween. All you need: Black leggings, a black turtleneck, white gloves, a red bow tie, a furry black tail and, of course the signature tall, red-and-white-striped hat. You'll find the cat's hat online and at party and costume stores.
The Hulk 7. Say what's old is new again, and that's certainly true of one of this year's biggest (literally!) characters. Many parents will remember him from their own childhood. For kids who want to portray this not-so-jolly green giant, a green sweat suit and ripped pants will do it. But your simplest option is to make tracks to a costume store and grab one of the ready-to-wear Hulk options. Kids are sure to be thrilled with the costume's rippled abs and arms and oversized head -- and you wouldn't want to make your little Hulk angry.
Lord of the Rings Characters 8. From the wizard Gandalf to the hobbit Frodo to the elf Arwen, characters from the fantasy flick Lord of the Rings are turning up everywhere this Halloween. Most party and costume stores are carrying an array of complete costumes for kids to choose from. Gandalf, shown here, is one of the easiest to recreate on your own. All you need: a long white dress or robe, a long white cape, a black belt or sash, and Gandalf's trademark white wiry hair and beard.
Fairy 9. Poof! A sprinkle of fairy dust may not turn your little one into a fairy. But a pastel-colored bodysuit and coordinating tutu certainly can! No fabulous fairy costume is complete without a pair of silky, sheer wings (which can be picked up at party stores or costume shops) and a magic wand -- buy one or make your own by wrapping a 20-inch-long stick in ribbon (hot glue it in place) and attaching additional ribbons as streamers from the top of the stick. White tights and ballet slippers or shimmery shoes make little fairies flight-worthy.
Animals 10. Lions, and tigers, and bears -- oh my! Creatures of the jungle and forest are popular again this year. Fans of The Lion King will especially love dressing up as Simba or Nala. To recreate this look for a baby, dye a cotton onesie lion yellow (you can use a combination of two Rit Dyes to get the right color: Golden Yellow with a touch of Tan) and glue or sew fake fur around the wrists and knees. Older kids can wear a yellow or brown sweat suit with fur attached. Finally, make your own mane by looping strips of fur. Or skip the fuss and just buy a premade lion's mane or wig. Finish off the look by drawing whiskers with face paint You can join Unsolved Mysteries and post your own mysteries or interesting stories for the world to read and respond to Click hereScroll all the way down to read replies.Show all stories by Author: 22308 ( Click here )
